To celebrate the publication of George & the Noisy Baby, we're working with Ladybird Books to find out which books you read to your children to help send them to sleep.

Share your favourites on this thread and one lucky participant will receive a whole bundle of Peppa Pig storybooks and other exciting goodies. There are also ten copies of George & the Noisy Baby for the runners up.

To enter our competition, just write in and let us know which books you read your DCs when bedtime has gone awry. We want to hear about classic storybooks and new finds – does ‘Goodnight Moon’ work for your baby, or is ‘Go The F* To Sleep’ more their thing? Share your stories on this thread before 10am on Monday 30 March. George & The Noisy Baby is published on 5 March 2015.

This competition is now closed!
And the winner is...

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for contributing!

My 2 year old really enjoys having stories before bed and it's an essential in the routine for winding down. At the moment we are reading a few of the shorter Beatrix Potter stories, Hug by Jez Alborough (less us reading it and more her talking about what is in the pictures) and Winnie the Pooh.

GuybrushThreepwoodMightyPirate · 02/03/2015 15:01

Dd goes through the entire works of Julia Donaldson and the Mr Men on rotation with Peppa and a current fave Mr Magnolia. She loves her stories Smile

NotMrsTumble · 02/03/2015 15:29

I prefer the gruffalo or the gruffalo's child, or the very ancient & no longer pc copies of Burglar Bill and Cops and Robbers (Alberg) from my own childhood. Ds2, 23 months requests a Peppa story every night.... We compromise with 2 stories, one for each of us.

PrueDent · 02/03/2015 15:29

I was going to say Goodnight Moon. Both my girls loved the simple pictures and calming text as babies and toddlers.

Now dd2 loves How to Hide a Lion by Helen Stephens, and dd1 likes to read it to her. And both of them like The Princess and the Peas by Carolyn Hart. They both join in with the rhythmic rhyming text and love this twist on a traditional fairy tale.

pillowaddict · 02/03/2015 16:11

We love Neil Gaiman's Crazy Hair and Terry Pratchett's Where is my cow? (Which I plagiarised into our own version where is my nose, goes down well!). The gruffalo and peepo are also favourites.

CallMeAntigone · 02/03/2015 16:22

We still like Shh! We Have a Plan by Chris Haughton. We reviewed it for the Mumsnet book club here and it is still a firm favourite. It has that soft repetitive rhythm that is perfect for bedtime.

julker · 02/03/2015 16:46

Any of the Shirley Hughes books Smile used to be a favourite of mine when I was younger too so its nice to be able to revisit them

fridaykitten · 02/03/2015 17:40

Currently it is disney princess stories, we have quite a few but still could tell you most off by heart by now!

We have just started some short chapter books as well, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the moment.

Anusia86 · 02/03/2015 17:58

We read different stories every day, my little girl is 2 years and 9 months old and now she is on that stage that she wants to turn pages on her own, she even tries to tell me what about is the story. Her favorite are any Peppa Pig story and if she's bored with them (we only have couple) any other with hard pages will be fine, as long as we 'read' books for around 20 minutes she is sleepy enough to go to bed without moaning :)

anniesk · 02/03/2015 18:06

My granddaughters are into Pajama Time by Sandra Boynton at the moment and yes Roald Dahl stories are always a favourite, especially Georges Marvellous Medicine!

EugenesAxe · 02/03/2015 18:19

Hushabye by John Burningham... it's all about creatures being tired and going off to a comforting sleep - all the words can be read very meditatively and conjure up a feeling of calmness and security.

My DS loves it - he's 5 now; has loved it since I bought it in his first year. I've always loved Mr Burningham's books generally, ever since my DPs read me The Cupboard and The Blanket until they were falling apart!

pixieindisguise · 02/03/2015 18:35

My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves There's a Wocket in my Pocket (by Dr Seuss, of course!). She loves the rhymes and the silliness, and after a week of having it every night, she started reciting it to me! I really do love that book and hearing my daughter reading it to me, and seeing how excited she is that she remembers it :)

MrsRedWhite214 · 02/03/2015 18:43

My son loves his latest Firman Sam book but he keeps calling it his Postman Pat book. It's so lovely to share that time with him before bed. He'd love some Peppa Pig books as on a Subday morning we sit in bed and sing along to the theme tune and name the characters.

BiggerYellowTaxi · 02/03/2015 18:49

We do "Each Peach, Pear, Plum" every night as a bedtime signal for my one year old. I now have it memorised. My 4 year old loves all sorts but I my faviurites to read him are Zog by Julia Donaldson and Oh, the Places You Will Go by Dr. Seuss.

SoreArms · 02/03/2015 18:53

DD (2.9) loves The Crocodile Who Doesn't Like Water by Gemma Merino...Definitely a go-to favourite, probably six nights out of seven. Needless to say I know it off by heart...Smile

LosingNemo · 02/03/2015 18:56

I read 'Say goodnight to the sleepy animals' religiously every night for the first 6th months to DS1, I was so paranoid about not changing his routine (hellion sleeper). I now recite it from memory to DD, who is 3 months, as I'm getting her into her jammies.

ThreeFrazzledFandangos · 02/03/2015 19:08

DS loves me to tell him the three little pigs, complete with huffs and puffs.

Other favourites are jazzy in the jungle by Lucy cousins, fox's socks by Julia Donaldson and peepo by Allan Albert.

We do love a bedtime story.

Growinghappinessundermyfeet · 02/03/2015 19:12

The Julia Donaldson books are the big favourite of my DD (3) at the moment. She likes reading the story to me and loves the rhyming .

Aladyinsane · 02/03/2015 19:12

Peace at last. Every. Single. Night. It's at the point where I no longer need the book and can merely recite it at will whenever the need arises.

Followed by a Julia Donaldson; super worm, the smartest giant in town or monkey puzzle are the favourites.

Penquin · 02/03/2015 19:15

18 month old loves the Tom and Pippo books. Also Peepo and The Hungry Caterpillar. Hairy McClary too.

3.5 year old will also enjoy all of these, plus The Gruffalo's child, Paper Dolls. Recently I have found that good books for bedtime have been paperbacks with minimal pictures so she can lie down and close her eyes while I'm reading. We've been doing Paddington Bear, Winnie The Pooh and just started the Amelia Jane Enid Blyton stories.

webster147 · 02/03/2015 19:32

We love reading 'The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet' & 'Barry The Fish With Fingers' at bedtime.

Crumpledandcreased · 02/03/2015 19:38

Both of mine love Peepo, and I don't think I'll ever tire of reading it to them.

Pigeonpea · 02/03/2015 19:49

Bedtime reading is a favourite in our house and the choices are mainly:-
The Snail & The Whale
Room on The Broom
Little Rabbit Runaway

Occasionally; Stick Man, Little Rabbit goes to School

worrybynature · 02/03/2015 19:55

My daughter is a Peppa-aholic, so unsurprisingly her favourite bedtime story is 'The Biggest Muddy Puddle In The World'. It is long enough to be an actual story for a 2.5year old, but not too long that she becomes bored. Nothing makes her stop what she's doing and hop into bed like it!

PickledLilly · 02/03/2015 20:01

Anything with a nice rhythm, what the ladybird heard, any of the hairy Maclary books and click clack moo. She's also really into dear zoo at the moment and likes to have it in her cot after I've read it so she can lift the flaps up herself.
