Why is a life without kids still not promoted as a route to happiness?

Parenthood looks awful. Certainly worse than it needs to be in modern times but fundamentally wretched in many ways. An abandonment of the self.

Shouldn't we be telling young people not to have kids unless they really want to? Like we'd advise with anything so hard.

Parents are anxious, lonely, overwhelmingly stressed – and their crisis affects everyone | Emma Beddington

People keep coping until they absolutely can’t, and parents are at breaking point. Why aren’t politicians treating this as an emergency, asks Emma Beddington

Well I'm sorry @poppyzbrite4 but if you're so happy with your life childless what are you doing on here posting about it?

There is literally no logic whatsoever in that question.

imverynosey · 16/09/2024 19:16

There's no logic in the time of this thread. Literally promoting not having children as a route to happiness. Everyone's "happy" looks different and it pretty much goes without saying we have them if we want them or don't if we don't? Most females DO have the biological urge and that's what makes them happy.

If I put a post up saying having children is the route to happiness you'd be pissed too.

Ridiculous post and offensive to those that do have them, as vice versa would be

Everyone gets that you're annoyed at a post about being childless in the MN without children forum.

MerryMarys · 16/09/2024 19:19

I also find that the idea of promoting being child free as a route to happiness very strange... I think that most women would be less happy without children as I think that there is a biological desire for offspring. But that's just my personal opinion.

@bringincrazyback Well she's currently asleep and when she wakes up we will have a cuddle I guess

How sad for you that you don't appear to have any interests beyond your child. Or is there some other reason you're passing the time while she sleeps trying to antagonise people on this thread?

imverynosey · 16/09/2024 19:24

@bringincrazyback I have plenty of other interests lol but she is 8 weeks old so for now they are on hold, probably another excuse /reason for you to hate on mother hood (strange) however I wouldn't change it for the world !

Daleksatemyshed · 16/09/2024 19:25

For the people who've said there isn't still any form of pressure to want to be a DM, may I invite you to go to any reasonably sized toy shop and look at the difference between the girl's toys and the boys. Even now the girl's sections are full of baby dolls, pushchairs, kitchen sets, all the things so a girl can be like Mummy.

imverynosey · 16/09/2024 19:25

I don't see how I'm antagonising anyone ..it's my opinion and you're only bothered if it's touched a nerve

People are promoting CHOICE. Women having more choice is a good thing. And i seem to remember a lot of posts on benefit bashing threads saying people shouldnt have children unless they can afford them. Now the birth rate has dropped , the whining has started now that the reckoning has to be paid.

JapansWarriorClass · 16/09/2024 19:28

I think the world will control its population in order to survive, not necessarily humans surviving but other species and the planet itself. Everything evolves. I have never had a biological imperative to have children - never a drive to do so. There are lots of women and men like me. It could be as simple as evolution - over population has caused horrendous outcomes, time to reduce.

You're calling people arseholes and telling them what lonely old hags they are. I don't care enough about some randomer on MN for it to have touched a nerve. You're being unnecessarily rude.

You haven't added anything meaningful, or taken the time to read the OP properly. You've jumped straight into defending parenthood because you imagine people are 'hating on it'. The OP hasn't said parenthood isn't a route to happiness. She's said it's not the only route to happiness and shouldn't be entered into lightly.

There isn’t. Other animals are programmed to behave in a way which will bring about offspring i.e to have sex but they feel no conscious desire for them. The conscious desire for offspring which most - by no means all - humans have is mostly down to social conditioning.

TwilightSkies · 16/09/2024 19:33

Why are people with children so bloody defensive?? And I say that as someone who has DC. If you are so happy with your choice to have DC, why are you so angry at people who have found happiness without DC? I genuinely don’t understand it.

It is weird to me how most people can’t see this. I wonder how it must be to go through the world like some posters on this thread.

No biological desire here. Delighted I don't have children. I think social conditioning is quite apt, it's something you think you 'should' do, and I think a lot of women regret entering into parenthood but would never admit it.
