Help, my new nanny is a bit shouty, and I'm worried, and would like advice on how to handle it

My lovely calm, quiet, loving nanny of 5 years left last week, and a new nanny started. She is NNEB, worked in a nursery (baby room) most recently, nannied for 2 children before that. She's now been with us for just over a week.

I'm a little worried about how she interacts with the children. She has been playing quite well with DD1 (9), and has been givena very hard time by DD2 (16 months) who screams at strangers generally and hasn't settled with her yet (screamed constantly yesteerday morning when I went to the supermarket apparently). DS1 (6) has been OK with her, DS2 (3) had his tonsils and adenoids out last Tues and was feeling rotten until this weekend.

She is a bit of a sargeant major - issues orders and won't brook any discussion at all, even when it would be (I think) completely reasonable to listen to what they are saying. eg she was asking them to go upstairs for a bath - we have two staircases to go up, and DS2 wanted to go up the other one to the one she was asking him to go up - and she was raising her voice and saying "DS2, I have asked you to go up to your bath and you need to go up these stairs NOW". I don't see why he couldn't have gone up the other ones if he wanted to. There are lots of other examples - I don't think I heard my last nanny raise her voice more than about 2ce (usually in situations where I would have strangled them hours previously!), whereas raising her voice appears to be this nannies MO.
My 9 year old has asked me why she shouts so much
My housekeeper has told me she is concerned.

What do I do?

tutter, at least if you provide a car for the nanny to use you will know the history and how safe the car is. I had a new freelander provided and when someone drove into the back of me on the school run we got away with just a scratch, the other car was written off!

SO, you are meeting potetial new nanny tonight, right? We want to know all about it (of course! We are nosey like that).

Good luck. Hope she is lovely and not shouty.

bump to know what's going on

Potential nanny couldn't make the interview because she had to work late yesterd. So peahead(or peanips as she called herself today) has rescheduled interview for this weekend and I think is interviewing another one this weekend too.

I obviously spend way too much time on here if I can report all of this!

PrincessPeaNips · 08/06/2007 13:17

oh sorry!
I'm horribly neglectful
Yes, she was going to come this weekend but now has 'fessed up to the agent and said that she actually wants to work abroad again. so the 21yr old is history. although she does have a sister who is an experienced nanny who is coming BACK from a stint abroad next week - I'll have a look at her.
otherwise interviewing a 33yr old who has been in her last job for 8 years , looking after baby - 8 and two older children who must be adults by now.
otherwise.... nothing lined up.
AURGH!Disastre!

he he he

nannynick · 08/06/2007 18:13

In a job for 8 years... at least you know that nanny gives commitment

Please don't rule out a 33 year old... I'm 32, and probably won't be nanny job hunting again until I'm 33, 34 or even 35!

Good luck with interviews, whomever you are able to interview. Do keep us all updated.

PrincessPeaNips · 08/06/2007 18:19

oh no not ruling 33 yr old out at all!
It is only extreme youth I have a problem with, not marginal youth

will def keep posted - so far she is my only. might have to struggle on with an imported aussie or something until sept. Hmmm
