Just watched an episode of one born every minute and this woman was SCREAMING, and I mean screaming from the top of her lungs. She was kicking the bed, trying to roll off of it, and was clearly in agonising uncontrollable unbearable pain. I’m due in 1 week!!! This is not what I needed to see 🤣 I’m so scared. someone tell me their positive stories. This is my first time. I know everyone has a different experience. I’m just hoping I can do this! I’m unbelievably scared now.

@Goldencup Very much medicalised, but getting better. Midwives were all but nonexistent once upon a time. As for gas + air, it's becoming more readily available, but is certainly nowhere near as ubiquitous as it is here.

The feeling of achievement? You have a baby - it’s irrelevant how. It’s not a lesser achievement if you have an epidural or c-section.

I agree.

I didn't care how my baby was born as long as he arrived happy and healthy.

@Parker231 People are different. I felt a huge sense of achievement in growing and giving birth to a healthy baby. But I ALSO felt a sense of achievement in doing it without intervention.

It isn't an achievement though when it ultimately comes down to luck.

Baby's positioning
Potential complications during pregnancy which means an induction or c-section is necessary
When baby is born such as premature or overdue
Multiple pregnancy such as twins which can lead to complications
Emergency during labour which means a c-section is necessary

@Parker231 "t isn't an achievement though when it ultimately comes down to luck."
I realise there is a lot of luck involved. I think I already said that. But it was important FOR ME to give birth without pain relief or other interventions if I possibly could. So FOR ME doing that was an achievement.

One born every minute is for entertainment, if it was full of straightforward births no-one would watch it. ;)

I was so worried about giving birth it actually put me off ttc for years but honestly you just get on with it.

I did some hypnobirthing (actually quite scientific and not as hippy dippy as expected) and it really helped.

You'll be fine OP.

I've had 3 births with absolutely zero pain killers not even gas and air. It hurts but if you trust that your body knows how to give birth and that your baby knows how to be born then it's more a case of letting nature get on with it and the midwives to guide you. Try to relax into it and trust that it sometimes takes a long time. I've had a broken limb and bad migraines which have hurt worse.

Strange, she has spent so much on medical insurance and has had so many more appointments than I did. ( I think low risk pregnancy King's College 2006 was a total of 6) yet no midwives, no gas and air, which I think of as fairly basic. And gas and air is wonderful.

Goldencup · 16/08/2023 16:36

Gas and air is wonderful IMO obviously not everyone thinks so but seems such a pity not to be given the opportunity.

Sorry- @Parker23, I replied to the wrong poster.

I’m sure everyone feels a sense of achievement in growing and giving birth to a healthy baby. I also felt a huge sense of achievement that I’d done it without any pain. It was an amazing day.

I would far rather give birth again than suffer another migraine!

@anmummy I keep wondering how you got on. I realise you must have your hands full now but an update would be much appreciated!! Hope all is well.

Mitchyp · 17/08/2023 15:11
