Currently being induced - Can I ask to stop?

Was induced yesterday due to a scan the day before at 39+3 saying I had severe excess fluid. Had a pessary in for 24 hours and nothing has changed. I’ve been here for over 36 hours now, I’ve not slept and I’m struggling mentally.

Am I able to request a c section instead? My mum had a stillborn linked to induction, I’m at risk of cord prolapse the longer I go and I’m really working myself up and just don’t think having anything else shoved up me is going to be right for me 😞

Ahhh, good look to you Flowers as others have said, it is your body and your delivery, therefore you should be in charge of it. FWIW I don't think they'll object to an elective C-section all things considered

BTV2000 · 14/05/2021 09:42

Hey OP. It sounds like the Midwife listened well to your concerns and therefore has halted the IOL process for you, until the Consultant has had a chance to chat through your worries and questions.

IOL can be stopped, it is your decision, however they will want you to make an informed decision on how you want to proceed going forward, and to do so, they will likely tell you all the risks and benefits of either continuing with the IOL or opting for a c-section. It can feel overwhelming, but it is our job to make sure you have all the facts and figures so you can make the best desicion for you and your family.

I've cared for women before who have requested to 'rest' for 24hrs. Some then attempt IOL again and others opt for C-section.

Hope all is well

Oh, bless you. I just wanted to say, along with everyone else, that you do have the right. Great to hear your partner is also advocating for you, it can be so hard to do it yourself when you are in the middle of it. All the best to you.

Please speak up and don't take no for an answer! I was induced on a Monday morning, had 2 pessarys complained repeatedly that I wasn't happy and baby wasn't moving (I was induced for weeks of reduced movements) they finally took me to labour ward on Thursday at 2am in the morning. Went on the drip, got to 10cm was beyond exhausted and begged for a section from the Monday. Anyway ended up in an emcs and a baby born with sepsis. Listen to your gut and your choices! Hope you have your baby very soon x

Good luck OP

Littlebee1990 · 14/05/2021 10:12

Section approved, I shouldn’t have ever doubted them. Consultant asked to examine me, I’m fully closed and cervix is high and they can’t even feel any part of his head and think he may have changed position again. They agreed a section is the best option.

Huge thank you everyone for encouraging me to be brave x

Welldone OP Smile best of luck for the section and getting to meet your new baby! x

feathersandferns · 14/05/2021 10:33

Oh great news! Well done! Hope it goes really well. I had an emergency section after an induction went wrong for my first and it was a blur - my planned section for my second was beautiful. Calm and lovely. Could not have asked for a better birth experience. Hope yours is good too x

mommybear1 · 14/05/2021 10:34

Somethingvague · 14/05/2021 10:37

Congratulations! I had a terrible induction experience with my first - I wish I'd known to do push for a section.

WingingItSince1973 · 14/05/2021 10:41

Wow fantastic news. Well done for asking. I've had 3 sections. 2 emergencies, first after a very long induced labour due to pre eclampsia, the second due to not progressing and the 3rd elective. Recovered well after all 3. Hope you get to meet your baby soon xxx

vixeyann · 14/05/2021 10:53

I wish I had known you could ask to stop. I endured a horrible time when they forgot about me essentially as they were too busy. I asked for a c-section once I had been awake for 2 nights and they kept telling me to wait longer. Pointless as in the end ended up with an emergency c-section as they said I would be too tired to push! Please speak up xx

Carouselfish · 14/05/2021 10:57

Really pleased for you OP. An elective was so much better imo than the vaginal pool delivery I had for my first. Even though nothing went wrong, with the first, I still felt traumatised and with my second, the elective made it easier to bond immediately with my baby.
99th centile makes it sound like the best option even without all the other factors!
Get partner to get you some windeze (sp?) for afterwards and some cranberry juice or capsules to help ward off uti infections.
Don't be afraid to tell your anaesthetist how you're feeling during. I had to have anti nausea meds at the start and an extra bump of painkiller at the end.
