Hi I’m having my first baby I just wanted to know on average how long people stay in hospital. I would love to be in and out in the same day. How likely is this?x

All depends on what happens! I was in for 2 nights, longest 2 nights of my life Grin

Aragog · 13/04/2019 22:03

I have known friends to be out the same day - about 6 hours later or so.

I had an induction and a c section, so was in longer. Had dd on the Friday evening and come home the Monday morning. Went in for induction on the Wednesday before though.

I stayed 2 days after having DS because I was trying to establish breastfeeding. He was a straightforward delivery so otherwise I could have gone sooner, just didn't want to latch on!

WingingItAsIGo · 13/04/2019 22:04

First baby the following evening, second third and fourth was out after the minimum 6hour wait.
Depends on the time of day baby arrives etc.
First one was the only time I was moved onto the post natal ward too; the others I stayed in my delivery room until discharge.

Dc 1 - 1 night
Dc 2 - about 7 hours
Dc 3 - under 6 hours
Dc 4 - under 6 hours

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2019 22:05

Two nights with DC1. He was born just after midnight on Thursday & we went home on Saturday. With DC2 I managed to escape later the same day. It will depend very much on how things go for you.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 13/04/2019 22:06

5 nights. C section then moved to a quiet, smaller hospital the second day. They were helping me establish breastfeeding and I think wanted 'customers' to keep the department going.

Seniorschoolmum · 13/04/2019 22:06

Ds born 8am Monday. Went home Thurs pm once I was back on my feet.

Passmethecrisps · 13/04/2019 22:08

First baby we were home within 8 hours of her being born but readmitted with feeding issues for two nights.

Second baby I was home within 8 hours and stayed home.

Both were induced. Needed theatre for 3rd degree tears which required an epidural (annoying after giving birth with only G&A) for baby 2 but was fine once the numbness wore off and the catheter was removed

Sexnotgender · 13/04/2019 22:08

DD 5 days but that was due to issues with her.

DS about 14 hours, would have been out after 8 but staffing shortages meant no one to do his checks.

Mommaof2x · 13/04/2019 22:09

I had two births evening/before midnight, both times I went home the next day around 4pm.

CherryPavlova · 13/04/2019 22:11

Varied between 9 days and 1 hour.

Youngandfree · 13/04/2019 22:11

Dc1 had her Saturday night and came home Tuesday
Dc2 had him Saturday morning and came home on Tuesday again
Both normal births but I did have blood loss with Dc2 so needed a transfusion

Chuffingchuff · 13/04/2019 22:13

DC1 was complicated and I ended up with a spinal.block and forceps delivery
I was in about 24 hours.
Dc2 I had 11.20pm, and was let home around midday the next day.

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2019 22:15

A month. With follow up appointments at hospital for a year afterwards.

It's a long story, but to quote the consultant, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Apart from with my daughter, who is and was perfect.

Pre eclampsia then full blown eclampsia, placenta left in side me, an infection which got in my blood stream, and I haemorrhaged three times, inc during my Emergency c section.

AllTheFunAndGames · 13/04/2019 22:20

3 nights after vb
5 nights after cs

I hated it and couldn't wait to go home.

Ribeebie · 13/04/2019 22:21

I went home 4 hours after DS arrived. Went in at 8pm. Had him at 1am. Was stitched up, had a bath, showed that I could feed him and home at 5am. Was in my own bed by 5:30. Just how I could have chosen it to be honest.

Cornishmum00 · 13/04/2019 22:24

1 night with dd, 3-4hrs with ds

crosspelican · 13/04/2019 22:26

Dd1 - 3 interminable, sleepless nights because of jaundice. I attribute so many of her babyhood issues to that time & wish I had had the confidence to just get in a taxi & go home.

Dd2 - DH left the labour room, got in a taxi & went home, showered & came straight back with the car seat to collect us! Less than 4 hours after we saw the head, I was home in my own bed.

NorthernRunner · 13/04/2019 22:27

Dd was born at 1.50am Friday morning and I was home by 6.30pm Friday evening. I did go in on the weds eve to be induced though so I was itching to go home.

I’m pregnant with dc2 and considering a home birth mostly because the idea of not waiting to be discharged is such a plus.

Ikeameatballs · 13/04/2019 22:29

Dd 5 days (pre-eclampsia and multiple associated complications)
Ds 24 hours after c section

missmartini · 13/04/2019 22:31

2 days after my first just to keep an eye on bloods as we are different blood types, with my second we were leaving the hospital exactly 24 hours after he was born.

All the best when it happens OP

badg3r · 13/04/2019 22:36

I was one day and then around 10 hours. Even if you are ready to go very soon after, it will depend a bit on what time DC is born. If they are born in the afternoon you might need to stay in overnight if they can't discharge you before the evening shift change.

MotherOfTheNoise · 13/04/2019 22:37

First baby 11 hours
Second baby 3 days (wanted help establishing breastfeeding)
Third baby under 6 hours

randomsabreuse · 13/04/2019 22:38

1st 24h because meconium in waters... 12h obs ended in the middle of the night...
2nd 48h because I couldn't pee after labour so had 24h catheter then had to pee twice after it was out!
