Hi I’m having my first baby I just wanted to know on average how long people stay in hospital. I would love to be in and out in the same day. How likely is this?x

I gave birth at 8:30 pm and went home at 11am the next day.

They said I could have gone home that night but I thought it was probably best to stay.

I'm having a home birth (if all goes to plan) this time though so hopefully won't have to go in to hospital at all!!

kayakingmum · 13/04/2019 22:41

Arrived at 8:00pm-ish Thursday night left 6:00pm-ish Friday night. Baby was born at 1:00am Friday morning.

I didn't feel kicked out genuinely felt ready to leave.

Shixtyshixpershent · 13/04/2019 22:41

3 hours both times. Wish I’d stayed a bit longer in retrospect. Was offered to stay on the midwife led unit for a night with my second but just wanted to get home at the time. Think I could have benefited from some extra breastfeeding support at the beginning with both.

tessiegirl · 13/04/2019 22:42

I was induced at 9pm Christmas day.
Finally gave birth to dd at 3.30am on 27th.
Went home at 4pm on 28th.

Tootyfrooty35 · 13/04/2019 22:47

Dd1... Two nights to help with breastfeeding but I hated being there.
Ds1 home birth 😁
DS2 16hours. He was born at 8pm so stayed in delivery room til midnight then ward. As mw pointed out... That would likely be the only one to one I got with him so I took the chance. Got tea and toast on tap so I was happy to stay. Even happier to get out though!

Whitechocandraspberry · 13/04/2019 22:50

A few hours with all 4. Had them in early hours of morning. Left as soon as they had their checks. Couldn’t wait to get home to my own bath and bed

smithyssister · 13/04/2019 22:51

DD1- 6 hours
DD2- 3 hours (midwife led unit)

I have been blessed with relatively quick, easy and straightforward labours.

SamStephens · 13/04/2019 22:52

Depends on the hospital policy and your birth experience. Mine were quick and easy so I was out within 6hrs which is our hospital policy. It’s great.

Had DS at 11:40am on the Monday and was home at 7pm on the Tuesday.

We were under observation as waters had been gone for four days by the time he was born. When they came around on the Monday afternoon to do discharge, it all looked fine until they noticed he was breathing too quickly and rushed him down to NICU. Thankfully it wasn't an infection and he was discharged from NICU that evening but they wanted to keep us in for another 24 hours just in case.

We were in a private room and I really didn't mind it if I'm perfectly honest. DH was with me the whole time and the staff were fantastic support.

BertieBotts · 13/04/2019 22:54

About 12 hours with both.

Mummyto2munchkins · 13/04/2019 22:55

1st was 2 nights purely because of problems in the pregnancy and baby needed checks (if there was no problems would have been the one night - was born in the evening)
2nd was a ferry unexpected home birth, didn't even go to the hospital :)

bluesky45 · 13/04/2019 22:56

Ds1 was 8 days but there were a series of complications related to him needing resuscitation at birth and subsequently being too sleepy to feed leading to a NICU stay.
Ds2 I went in on the Thursday night to be induced, had him 1am on Friday morning. Could have gone home that evening but my iron levels were very low and the mw wanted me to stay and I was in a lot of pain with afterpains plus struggling to establish breastfeeding (again!) so we stayed in an extra night. Got discharged around 2pm on the Saturday. That length of stay felt right, I thought I would want to be in and out 6hrs after delivery but I was happy to be looked after and not have to do anything, helped by that fact that partners can stay on our postnatal ward so I was never alone.

Ginger1982 · 13/04/2019 22:57

5 nights. 2 nights pre-birth and 3 nights after.

PutYourBackIntoit · 13/04/2019 22:57

Dc1 & dc2 matter of hours.
Dc3 (c section), 2 nights in hospital, 7 nights at midwife led unit. Delicious meals together around s wooden table, hot chocolate brought to us every evening at 10pm by staff in plain clothes. They even took my baby during the day for s bath and a nap because I'd had a tricky night. DH and dc1&2 welcome all day every day if so desired. Just lush. They asked me if I was ever going to leave 😁

Worth moving to Stroud just to give birth Grin

CointreauVersial · 13/04/2019 22:57

1st baby - overnight
2nd baby - 3 days (emergency CS)
3rd baby - about 8 hours

RedPandaMama · 13/04/2019 23:01

Went into labour Thursday, in hospital from 11pm Friday with DP. Born at 3pm Saturday, left at 3pm Sunday so in one night on my own. Didn't want to stay overnight and was absolutely terrified but to be honest our stay was lovely. We established breastfeeding, felt like I really bonded with DD just me and her behind our little curtain. Only one other person on the ward so it was quiet and we actually got a decent night's sleep, lovely breakfast in the morning and kind midwives. Really positive experience overall.

YouBoggleMyMind · 13/04/2019 23:03

2 nights (didn't really need to be there the 2nd night but they didn't let me go cos feeding hadn't been established)

bourbonbiccy · 13/04/2019 23:09

I discharged myself after about 10hours, my son had been transferred to Neo Natal ward so I discharged myself.

I think it all depends on your birth, it's definitely not out of the question if everything goes ok. Good luck.

Nat6999 · 13/04/2019 23:10

4 nights, 6 nights in total. Was admitted with pre eclampsia to be induced on Saturday night, induction failed Monday night, EMCS, 48 hours in high dependency then on post natal ward 48hours until I discharged myself.

Mucky1 · 13/04/2019 23:15

With my first when I was 18 (I'm 43 now) 3 days. With my last 2 hrs I couldn't wait to get out of there.

FluffySocks123 · 13/04/2019 23:17

Walked into hospital at 1:01am, Had baby at 1:11am, was out at 4pm

FortyFacedFuckers · 13/04/2019 23:22

6 hours my hospital wouldn’t let you out before that! Had DS at 11.04 at 5pm I was standing at the door waiting to be let out 😂

Boobahs · 13/04/2019 23:22

8 days. Went in to be induced (GD), had 4 pessary gels which didn't work, 24 hours+ on the drip, laboured for another 24 hours but didn't dilate, ended up with a EMCS on the 5th day, had to stay in another 3 days. Came home on his due date!

WeTookVows · 13/04/2019 23:23

DD1 was born around midnight and we went home about 36 hours later (she had a floppy heart valve at 9 hours old but it had resolved by the time they checked it again the following morning)

With DD2 and DS, I was discharged within 6 hours.

DD3 - we were kept in for 12 hours as there'd been meconium in the waters.

All spontaneous vaginal deliveries with or without epidural.

runningtogetskinny · 13/04/2019 23:26

5 nights, blood pressure went through the roof
