Hi I’m having my first baby I just wanted to know on average how long people stay in hospital. I would love to be in and out in the same day. How likely is this?x

1 night. I was actually asked how long I wanted to stay - I'd have liked to have stayed longer as it was so lovely, but didn't need to stay so went home.

stucknoue · 13/04/2019 23:31

12 hours, it does depend on time of birth a bit and dd was born in the evening, hospital is horrible and noisy. My second was born overseas so a private hospital, if I had had another in the U.K. I would have chosen immediate discharge (you don't go to the ward at all) or home birth, though now I'm ancient if I did have another I would be high risk (no chance at the moment as h is leaving but the perfect replacement, who knows ...)

managedmis · 13/04/2019 23:34

Had 2 sections, 2 nights each time.

RuthW · 13/04/2019 23:35

Ten days. Baby was in special care unit for 9 days.

Linnet · 13/04/2019 23:38

With dd1 I stayed in five days, this was over 20 years ago now, I was young and wasn’t leaving until I knew what I was doing!

With dd2 she was born at 5.30pm and we went home at 2pm ish the next day.

Looking back I could have gone home earlier with dd1 but they weren’t rushing me out the door and I was happy to stay-in for a few days to get to grips with my brand new tiny human.

12 hours

violetdazed · 13/04/2019 23:53

I went in first thing on the tues morning to be induced. Baby born 7am on the Thursday, but we were kept in til the following weds as baby had suspected infection and was on antibiotics, and jaundice so was under the lamp. I was literally delirious with lack of sleep by the time I got home. Still the best thing I ever did tho!

StylishDuck · 13/04/2019 23:55

DD - went in for induction on Sun eve, born tues morning via forceps, home thurs afternoon, only because I needed a blood transfusion otherwise I would have got home on the wed.

DS - went in for induction on thurs eve, born sat morning via c section, home on sun afternoon.

My point is, neither of them were "straightforward" births yet I was home within 24-48 hours of them being born.

First DC was 1 night after birth due to baby needing monitoring all day. I could have gone home early evening but they offered me the room overnight and I jumped at the chance, my room had an ensuite wet room and DH got a reclining chair. We both got some sleep and home the next morning.

Dc2 I had at home but transferred to hospital afterwards for PPH. One night in the postnatal ward and I was glad to go home the following day.

IndieTara · 14/04/2019 00:10

Induced on Thursday. Gave birth Sunday by emergency c section. Went home 4 days later

Itsagrandoldteam · 14/04/2019 02:00

12 days

I ended up having an emergency c section, after being in labour for days. I was discharged after about 5 days, but I obviously stayed there until my son was discharged. He didn't breathe for 6 minutes and had a swelling around his brain, he's absolutely fine now though.

Wigeon · 14/04/2019 02:03

DD1 - 6 hours, the minimum they insisted for a first baby.

DD2 - 4 hours, basically as soon as I could. She was meant to be a planned homebirth but midwife shortages when I went into labour (around my due date) meant they said they had none to send out, and so I just wanted to be back home as quick as possible.

Both were spontaneous vaginal deliveries with no complications.

Parly · 14/04/2019 02:37

Four hours. I didn't even leave the delivery suite or get tagged up I'd come in, given birth and left all within the space of a night shift.

roundligament · 14/04/2019 02:41

2 nights
I had a c section late about 11 pm by GA spent all the next day and all the next night in and got discharged the next morning
2 nights in total
My son went to SCBU but I was fit for discharge and so glad to go home to rest
I would discharge if you want to get home and feel safe xxx it will feel long when you're there but it will pass quickly as life goes on and baby grows up
Good luck how exciting xxx

trampolinebouncer · 14/04/2019 06:43

1st child - stayed in 4 nights as he would not feed/suck - after syringe feeding & expressing he got the hang of it and we managed to establish BF.

2nd - born at 8pm, stayed in one night home next afternoon

3rd - home from delivery room after 6hrs, readmitted for high BP on day 3.

4th - has been in for 4 days for induction before he was born, stayed in one blissful night in my own room.

IggyAce · 14/04/2019 07:03

Dc 1 was out the following afternoon, after just over 24 hours in hospital.
Dc2 it was same day he was 7 hours old when we left.

Natsku · 14/04/2019 07:05

4 days with first baby
5 days with second baby

Both times because they were slow to start gaining weight again after the initial loss

Mummyme87 · 14/04/2019 07:11

DS1 12 nights. Had a CS and I was unwell, DS also had meningitis so was on NNU and was on paed ward for a couple of days

DS2 he was born at 1am and I went home after 36hrs. I had a massive PPH, 3rd degree tear and blood transfusions. Consultant wanted me in longer but I insisted on leaving.

Really depends on your pregnancy, the birth, time of birth and how baby is feeding etc afterwards. First babies tend to be a night on the postnatal ward if a vaginal birth

Lauren83 · 14/04/2019 07:12

22 hours (semi elective c section) was a failed induction, had him at 2pm and was out by lunch time the day after

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/04/2019 09:39

4 hours but I was ready for home after 2. The discharge took a while as they were short staffed.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/04/2019 09:40

I was only in hospital around 6 hours in total which was fab for me. In around 5pm, discharged around 11pm.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/04/2019 09:52

Dc1- they had no beds & baby had been transferred to scbu so I was discharged 4 hours later
Dc2- again in scbu, virtually the same as dc1
Dc3- stayed one night discharged by the time baby was 12 hours old
Dc4- again stayed one night, discharged when baby was just over 12 hours old
Dc5- discharged when baby was 6 hours old (I had been in the 2 night prior for induction though).

SequinsDress · 14/04/2019 17:11

DC1 I gave birth at 5:30pm and stayed in overnight. Discharged the following afternoon so just shy of 24hrs. In hindsight I should have stayed in longer as breastfeeding only barely established, but I was desperate to get off the ward! This was a hospital delivery.

DC2 - gave birth at 6:20am and was home by midday. This was at a community birth center, midwife led.

annlee3817 · 14/04/2019 22:41

I had DD just after 7am and they gave me a choice to be home by lunchtime or stay the night for help with breastfeeding, I opted to stay. It really helped and I'm glad in a way that I did, but I was exhausted from losing a night's sleep to labour and that then made it difficult not having DH there for support.

Dreamzcancometrue · 15/04/2019 00:00

4/5 days because I had issues they thought would effect my baby's delivery. It was the longest 4 days of my life! Just wanted to take my baby home but i understand they have to do tests and obs on baby before they discharge.
