Being nosey- did you scream or were you quiet when giving birth?

Just being nosey really. I imagine myself being really quiet but I know when I get there I'll probably be screaming my head off. Think it will shock DH! x

Well I thought I was quiet - no swearing no screaming. But DH tells me the whole corridor could hear me. I personally doubt it but maybe he was better placed to remember as I was otherwise engaged.

singingmum · 12/07/2007 13:20

I know of one woman who apparently opera sang her way through childbirth.Don't know why I didn't think of that really

DebitheScot · 12/07/2007 13:20

I found it so much easier when I stopped the loud grunting, moaning type noise. Think about it, you're trying to push the baby down, if you're forcing a noise up out of your mouth that'll cancel out half your down force.

CatIsSleepy · 12/07/2007 13:29

I did lots of deep groaning-it seemed to help! towards it end it was more like shrieking really. It was quite liberating I must say.

I didn't do it while pushing though- I was told to hold my breath whilst pushing (also I found it wasn't hurting in the same way that point). But I found holding my breath whilst pushing really hard unless I held my nose...so that's what I did...mw and dh thought I was insane!

mamijacacalys · 12/07/2007 13:29

Strange mooing sound unique to birthing mothers just before you want to push.
When actually pushing, grunting, but quiet between contractions.
This was the same with both DS and DD.
Admit I yelled at the end with DS, as the forceps went in (sorry if TMI).
DD came out fine on her own so no dramatics!
Don't worry Princesspowersparkle, suck on the G&A, it's fab - just go with your body!

NineUnlikelyTales · 12/07/2007 13:38

Screamed the place down, so much so that the midwifes were having to reassure the nw arrivals that "some people just have a low pain threshhold" Yeah, it was nothing to do with the way they were butchering me.

I didn't swear though

NineUnlikelyTales · 12/07/2007 13:39

Oh sorry OP, I should add that it was all perfectly manageable and I didn't yell at all until a fair bit of medical negligence had gone on, which is very very rare and don't let it worry you at all. Oh God I wish I'd kept my mouth shut now.

Rumpel · 12/07/2007 13:44

SCREAMED and cried like a big baby - tears streaming down my face, baby was back to back, once I had an epidural I was fine, apart from all the noise I made vomiting my entire insides out.

Tutter · 12/07/2007 13:45

pmsl rumpel

WaynettaSlob · 12/07/2007 13:46

I was very quiet, with the odd grunt for both DSs. woman in the labor room next to me was a primal screamer. I wanted to throttle her.

bubblepop · 12/07/2007 13:50

ds1-small very stifled scream as head emerged.nothing to write home about!
ds2-never really said anythin, just a bit of a groan!
dd3-ABSOLUTELY SCREAMED THE ROOF DOWN!! (sure it wos somethin to do with her awkward positioning)
dd4-did'nt scream whatsoever, just said to dh "im never, ever doin this again!"

Panyanpickle77 · 12/07/2007 13:50

lots of gutteral grunting....if you make too much noise you are wasting energy imo. I did have the voice of the excorsist though

LadyTophamHatt · 12/07/2007 13:51

ds1,2+3 I made the usual grunts and moans

ds4 i screamed and screamed.

My friend from my post natal group had her ds the same day as ds4 and asked me if i heard "that woman" screaming?

my reply....

"errrr....I was that woman!!"

GrimoireThief · 12/07/2007 13:51

I was very quiet and no swearing. Weird. It's like the instinct not to swear in front of people in authority and children is so strong in me that it restricted me to saying "Ouch. My goodness that stung a bit"

Mainly it was the g&a thing stuck in my mouth though.

JARM · 12/07/2007 13:52

DD1 - epidural - silent

DD2 - no pain relief - grunted groaned and got through it!

tombley · 12/07/2007 13:52

I was very quiet and kept my eyes closed throughout, both times. I wouldn't recognise either of my midwifes again. I just felt I could cope better if I sort of went into myself. Probably worried that if I let it all out I would never stop screaming.
Dh wishes I was more like that on a regular basis but in the 35 years I have lived only my 2 births actually left me speechless.

Rumpel · 12/07/2007 13:52

Waynetta - I am sure the entire delivery suite felt that about me!

Princess - I was just unlucky - loads of other people have a great delivery and it has not put me off as I am hoping to do it again next year! Good luck

Tigana · 12/07/2007 13:55

I thought I'd be quiet, based on my general level of reservedness and embarassment at 'losing self control' in front of strangers.

In reality I sort of screamed and groaned through gritted teeth - alot.

BabyMadandBIGbump · 12/07/2007 14:13

With both DS's silent mostily with the odd grunt groan when pushing, the gas and air mask made more noies than me, hope to be the same this time (37 week come midnight) due to having a home birth this time round!

Princesspowersparkle · 12/07/2007 14:15

Thanks for all your stories- they made me laugh! Not bothered whether I scream or not- I think it will be funny to see DH face if I start effing and jeffing at him and screaming the place down (don't really swear much)!

My memory is somewhat unreliable due to pethidine, gas and air and epidural, but I'm pretty sure I bellowed like a mad cow. I cried throughout the whole labour and talked absolute rubbish at times. Afterwards I apologised profusely to everyone in the room for having made such a fuss, and no-one contradicted me, so I'm assuming I was a total nightmare. Nice.

LaBoheme · 12/07/2007 14:40

didn't scream as such bit cried and moaned like a aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sound, then a growling sound which really hurt my throat

Pinkchampagne · 12/07/2007 14:43

Didn't scream, but with DS1 I shouted "Get him out!" after pushing for what seemed like forever & a day!
With DS2 I cried because my epidural hadn't worked, I was in total agony & no-one was listening to me!

bozza · 12/07/2007 14:47

I grunted while pushing. I think of it as the sort of noise made by weightlifters but was in reality probably more like an injured cow. That was with DS. And I was pushing for two hours.

With DD no noise, but was an easy birth.
