Just being nosey really. I imagine myself being really quiet but I know when I get there I'll probably be screaming my head off. Think it will shock DH! x

Blood-curdling scream when her head came out DH is still traumatised. Before that though I was fairly quiet except the odd "make it stop" and "I don't like it"

I mooed like a hippo

Quite aptly, because I must have looked rather like a hippo too.

I growled. Nothing else. Just growling. Deep in my chest, like a rumbling. I could hear myself, but I had no idea where it was coming from, iyswim.

I didn't care at the time, but looking back I do wonder what on earth they thought!!

When I had dd1 I was anaesthetised from the waist down but with dd2 it was a very different experience and in the second stage at one point I felt that I just lost control completely. I could hear screaming and I thought to myself "Is that me screaming?"

It really annoys me when I hear of the midwife telling people off. I am usually very reserved but when you are in labour you simply aren't in control of what your body does. It just takes over and you have to let it. My friend recently had a baby and the midwife apparently told her off for screaming. It's a cr@p way to treat someone - it's not something I chose to do!!

I agree electra! My mw told me off for grunting cos she said I would get a sore throat and fair enough I did but at the time I couldnt help it like you said, I couldnt grunt like that now if you paid me She also told me off for having my hands in the wrong place cos they werent in a 'productive' position but I was more comfy and he came out in 6 pushes so must have been quite productive

With a very quick labour and arriving at hospital 6cm dilated I didn't get time for any "proper" pain relief, so I did scream a lot and found it really helped. I'd had some paracetamol at home earlier and tried G&A but didn't find it did anything. And besides by then I'd been screaming a while and found the G&A stopped me doing that so well. So all in all I did get the drug free birth I'd hoped for buy had been afraid I wouldn't be able to bear. However would recommend something a bit better than paracetamol - I had hoped touse tens and pool to help with pain, but just didn't get the chance, so while was quick was very painful and did feel a bit out of control. End result was worth it though

During the hard labour I kind of breathed thru the G&A thing which made a wierd rasping noise that I actually found it was good to focus on.
When I broke the mouth piece off I did hand it to DH and said (app in very harsh animal voice) "Fix it, NOW" which he said he didn't dare argue with. My mantra seemed to be, "I can't do it" but after 30 hrs was very tired.
With DD1 I screamed 3 times during the crowning, but think I am justified by the fact that she had her arm up round her head, which I also had to push out and which gouged me on the way out.
With DD2 I was much more moany during the labout as I found it helped and I was not happy with the rememberance of how much Labour hurt. But it was shorter so was more alert and actually kept my eyes open.
During the crowning more of a war cry to get her out. I didn't hang back with DD2 , like i did with DD1, cos I just wanted to get her out as I knew then it would all be over.

Oh and yes retching thru both, tho I found it distracted me and by the time I'd finished retching the contraction was about over

PPS have we scared you yet???

As a first-timer I surprised the MW.
Arrived at 2000 after 3 hours of established labour and appeared so chilled she was expecting to send me back home. Examined at 2030 and was 7cm.
Got into bath for an hour with G&A and waters broke whilst in there - I can remember telling DH it felt like bubblegum bubble bursting in wrong place. No more Hubba-bubba for me.
Very polite during transition, along the lines of 'please don't massage my back' and 'could you bring back the G&A now' as DH had wheeled it out of the bathroom.
Second stage only took 15 mins and I was so quiet and calm that DH and MW didn't realise that head was out (they were busy discussing the sports car DH had had to sell as couldn't fit a baby seat in it)
Natural 5 min third stage - was discussing whether or not to have the jab when it just fell out.
Afterwards did offer to go see the screamer across the ward to tell her it was a piece of p*ss! Total time from start to finish 5 hours.

Just goes to show what positive mental attitude, relaxation, breathing and just accepting that you aren't in control but your body is can do.

I was a screamer both times. Got told by the Jamaican mw (in a very heavy accent) to stop over reacting, calm down and be quiet! I felt better for it by screaming so proceeded to do so!

I was very quiet. I actually felt like it was all I could do to just breath - having to scream as well would have been impossible.

I managed to not swear too, which I was proud of!

I was really quiet and focused. To the point where the midwives kept asking me if I was okay! I did poo on DD as she was being born though she hasn't let me forget it!! I swore loads too.

I was pretty quiet according to the midwifes on duty, with my focus on my music (that irritated the hell out of the midwifes when they came to check as they didn't understand Swedish and also squeezing the husband's hand

Then ordered not to push as I needed emergency c-section, where the guys had some difficulty with the anesthetic with me, yet alone getting me to sit up!, and so I announced "I'm going to die, oh well" the sheer tiredness made me not care a jot about this thought and I'd forgotton they could have simply put me out as an alternative, which didn't need to happen in the end!

I howled like a wolf during contractions and then when I had to push his head out made a noise that was not human. DH and I still talk about it now!

I was induced for health reasons. It was fast and furious during the dilating bit so I screamed my head off during the frequent contractions, inbetween frantic gulps of gas and air. I was kneeling up against the back of the bed and wailing like a banshee - seemed to help me deal with the pain.

Later on, the contractions stopped and I had to have a drip to get them going again which didn't work but just caused even worse pain. By this time, the midwife had confiscated the gas and air, forced me onto my back, concertina'd me up so that my knees were under my chin, and told me not to make any more noise but to direct the energy into squashing (note: not pushing - there was no contraction sensation) the baby out.

I got stroppy, told her it was not working, begged for pain relief drugs - ignored and refused. After a brief pause and the threat of forceps, I obeyed orders and it worked.
