Apparently, (and having heard his views on post-natal depression, I can believe it) Katie Holmes will have to follow the scientologist rules of childbirth ie no noise (!) in case it traumatises the baby and no pain relief (!) which would surely traumatise the mother...

Anyone out there managed this?!

You will be telling me next that Cliff Richard fancies women.

dillydally · 07/10/2005 14:16

donnie · 07/10/2005 14:18

ok, ok, ....is this ' silence during birth' scientology thing actually FOR REAL???? I thought it was a JOKE....surely it is a joke?????

rubles · 07/10/2005 14:18

what a load of old tosh.
If she wants to make a noise in labour without pain relief I doubt there will be anything he can do to stop her.
Does that mean a c section without pain relief too?

there are other ways of conceiving you know...

Apparently John Travolta and Kelly Preston (also Scientologists) have been advising KH to have a "silent" birth. I do find it totally bizarre that men who have no experience of giving birth should be pontificating on how an individual mother should go through it. Don't know about KP's births.

Rachey1969 · 07/10/2005 14:21

Maybe she had IVF? That way she could have kept her virginity! Maybe it was an immaculate conception... After all, he does think he is god!

Tom doesn't like women much, does he?

cupcakes · 07/10/2005 14:22

Obviously this theory was devised by a man.
That being said...
when I was in labour with dd we had to drive over 30 minutes to the hospital, dropping ds off at my mil's on the way. It was a rather fast labour and I was contracting every 1-2 minutes and in a lot of pain (dh really had his foot on the pedal!). But because I didn't want to terrify ds (who was 2) I tried my hardest to turn the pain inside and not scream. Yes, it was incredibly hard but strangely after dropping ds off, when I was able to let rip, I found it better to carry on as I had been. For me it was as if it gave me something to control whilst going through the pain, like biting on something!
I was completely screaming by the time we got to the labour ward and for the actual delivery but for a while the attempted silence did actually help - I think it stopped me from panicking and was a way of keeping calm.
Not sure if that is why scientology recommends it (hmm) but I can see a little method in the madness.

dillydally · 07/10/2005 14:22

If you had wanted me to be silent through my labour and have no drugs, you would have required
a) a large mallett to knock me out
b) a tarpaulin gag to shut me up
c) both
God bless the resiliant ones who can cope.

CreepyJess · 07/10/2005 14:22

Tom is a tosser...

CreepyJess · 07/10/2005 14:23

Is he even ON the Hall of Fockers.?.. must rectify that oversight!!

Rachey1969 · 07/10/2005 14:23

I suggest we all round up TC and insert a turkey baster where the sun doesn't shine... see how he copes silently? On the other hand maybe he does like it...

There is a long history of men pontificating about childbirth....The C of E wanted to ban women from having anaesthetics in childbirth as it would be stoping them from feeling the pain that was Eve's punishment for tempting Adam. Queen Victoria stopped all of that by saying 'We are having the royal child and we shall have the anaesthetic' As Head of the C of E they couldn't contradict her

Good on you Vicky!

tortoiseshell · 07/10/2005 14:25

from the Scientology website....

What is a ?Silent Birth??

In the book, Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard writes that for the benefit of the mother and child, silence should be maintained during childbirth. This is because any words spoken are recorded in the reactive mind and can have an aberrative effect on the mother and the child. The same applies to the vicinity of any injured person. To find out why, read Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.

What a load of bollocks!

How do children decode what is being said if they haven't learned to speak?

How do they no know that they are howls of joy at their arrival. Ocean going bollocks!

dillydally · 07/10/2005 14:28

For the benefit of the mother you say?
hmmmmm

expatinscotland · 07/10/2005 14:28

What if she needs an emergency C-section? Does the Cult of Scientology allow for lifesaving medical procedures such as these?

happymerryberries · 07/10/2005 14:28

As a scoentist I object to their name. Scientology my arse! Cobblersology more like!
