It's so long ago I can't remember, but there were a lot (Dad changed the family car every so often, always second hand). I seem to recall a lot of Ford Falcons though.

LunaTheCat · 26/10/2025 05:50

We didn’t have one until late 70’s .. my Dad had a brow ( poo coloured) Corolla … I now drive a Corolla too 😀

Natsku · 26/10/2025 05:56

Volvo estate. It was brilliant, mum crashed into a police car in it once, the police car was a write-off but our volvo only got a dent in the bumper.

Natsku · 26/10/2025 05:57

Before the Volvo they had a Lada, and somehow managed to fit all 7 of us in it (4 in the back seat and one in the boot), but the Volvo had proper boot seats put in so we could all fit in safely.

chunkyBoo · 26/10/2025 06:03

Dad had a few ford Granada cars, jaguar XJ6, BMW and when I was really young a Capri
my mum had smaller cars, mini metro, Astra and when I was around 8 ish she had a few cars, can’t recall what they were called, but would now be classic cars, I just thought they looked really old fashioned in the lte 70’s early 80’s

How is it that I can remember the number plate of the car they had for most of my childhood when I've forgotten so much more useful / interesting stuff?

Renault 16
Ambassador
I can't remember the later cars, only the childhood ones.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/10/2025 08:01

Austin Maxi
a blue one, then a beige one
Sold when DDad had to give up driving and work due to ill health.
DM then bought a dreadful Ford Escort that stank of fags and made everyone feel sock, when DDad’s health deteriorated, quickly swapped for a Peugeot 205 which had a big enough boot for his wheelchair, and didn’t stink.

ohtowinthelottery · 26/10/2025 09:20

whimbrelcalling · 26/10/2025 12:40

My mum and dad got their first car in 1956, a Morris Minor. Then a Ford of some sort, followed by a series of Cortinas and Granadas (company cars). Mum then passed her test and got a second hand Cortina - white with a red vinyl roof.
Dad changed employer to a French company, and the company cars were Renaults - a 19 and a 25 I remember. Mum liked the Renaults and had a 19 for her next car.
After they retired they had small cars, a Fiesta, and several Nissan Micras, the latter of which was inherited by me and passed down to DC. Still going strong!

whimbrelcalling · 26/10/2025 12:43

@menopausalmare I’ve just remembered the Renault 16 that my dad swore was the worst car he’d ever driven!
