Peugeot 405. Fab cars. My dad had a sun roof fitted and they had a pull down arm rest in the middle seat with a little hatch to the boot.

MrsEndeavourMorse · 19/10/2025 19:51

Burgundy Triumph

Mum had a series of 1ltr fiestas that we eventually learnt to drive in, Dad did a lot of miles so changed cars fairly frequently, usually Toyotas or Mitsubishis that he picked up at 50,000 miles and ran to 150,000 miles then scrapped them 🤣

RedRiverShore5 · 19/10/2025 19:53

Ford Anglia

Randomchat · 19/10/2025 19:53

A green Citroën than I thought was the height of sophistication because it was French. Then a silver Ford Sierra. That's what I learned to drive in

The ones i can remember:
Vauxhall Viva
Moskovich
Austin Maxi x 2 one after the other
Reliant Regal (I am psychologically scarred by this one)
Princess
Ambassador
Lada Riva
Lada Samara
Renault Clio

Dad used to buy them cheap and run them till they expired. When he bought the Clio they had more money and could buy a car that would last.

They now have a Citroën - for the past 16 years...

Onefortheroad25 · 19/10/2025 20:02

I remember a few.
Fiat 124
Ford Escort
Ford Fiesta
VW Golf
Fiat Uno
Mini

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 19/10/2025 20:05

My in-laws:

Austin Metro.
Rover 100.
Two Volvo 440s
One Volvo S40.
Possibly two Ford Escorts (one was written off in a ditch, really bad driving)
At least one Fiat Panda.
Classic Mini (but mum didn't like it because it was an automatic, I don't blame her)
VW Polo.
VW Golf.

My dad had a Vauxhall Cavalier and then a Mazda. My mum can't drive, so never owned a car.

this was like the first bow we had - it was 4 door and red

thejadefish · 19/10/2025 20:10

VW beetle (loved that car), then a Talbot solara, then a Nissan of some kind. When my grandad died my dad gave my Gran the Nissan and she gave him Grandad's car (an Austin of some sort) then when that gave up the ghost in 2002 he got a Toyota Corolla that he still drives now. My mum has a driving licence but never drove much they always shared the car and either Dad would give us all a lift or we'd take the bus if he was working.

DevaneyRob43 · 19/10/2025 20:15

A number of Ford Anglias. A Wolseley whose brakes fell through the floor. A Triumph Herald which rattled above 50mph. Finally two VWs, a Polo then a Golf Y reg which would be a classic now

Talbot Alpine
I remember friend at school saying they had got a new car that was a Ford Sierra - I thought it sounded incredibly posh and wanted my Dad to get one 😆

I grew up in rural Ireland in the 80’s. No one had a flash car except one fella. He had a gorgeous red sierra. My brother and I thought he was so cool! Found out in later life he was actually minted!

violetpink · 19/10/2025 20:27

Jaguar and Audi

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/10/2025 20:32

A beige one. Always beige...

Luddite26 · 19/10/2025 20:33

In the 80s my dad drove a Porsche and my mum didn't even have enough money spare for the bus, she walked everywhere.

Lincslady53 · 26/10/2025 02:47

An old Ford Thames van, then a Ford Anglia estate. We used to fill the van with camping gear, put a wobbly bench seat on the back, not fixed in, and then Dad and four kids would go off all over the place for 2 weeks, leaving Mum at home with our baby sister. This came to an abrupt end going up a steep hill in North Wales, when the engine overheated, AA called out. Dad didnt know you had to put oil in. We managed to limp home, and a few weeks later the Anglia was bought, which I learnt to drive in.

Your dad sounds like a charmer.

Tarkan · 26/10/2025 03:02

I remember a little red Chevette then a brown Cortina after that. At some point we ended up with a Sierra instead, there may have been a couple of Sierras but I’m not sure. After that it was a company car that changed every couple of years. One year there was a red Rover but it was mostly Mondeos then I think the last one was possibly a Focus. My dad hasn’t had a car since he retired but he’s on the insurance for our car if he and my mum ever need to borrow it for anything.

StrawberryJangle · 26/10/2025 03:11

Vauxhall Viva... A great big tank of a thing in the 80s. Used to jump/judder up the road getting warmed up. Yeah, embarrassing 🤣
