I accidentally watched the promo video a few days ago. I think I probably need one now dagnamit.

So you need to give us the complete low down.

Did you get the full all singing all dancing set?

What fuel do you use?

Have you really cooked a whole chicken in it? was it a moist bird?

And jacket spuds?

How much can you shove in there?

is it a pita to clean?

How long does it stay hot for, so can you do your fish and then stick some bananas in foil in afterwards?

How high up on your list of essential camping kit is in now?

can you get them in different colours so I can get one to match my tent

Tell me us EVERYTHING.

please

DH ahs interrupted me to say that i'm wrong, the pan went on the single burner- sorry!

But that's an alternative anyway- you need a single burner for the kettle anyway so just use fry pan on that

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 28/06/2009 21:11

PS you probaly wouldnt want to anyway- Cobblestones would work out blardy expejnsivce if you used them for brekkie as well! Main meal olny I reckon

daisydancer · 28/06/2009 21:15

Yes, good point! We'll have the single burner anyway so still no need to buy expensive Cobb frying pan. Thanks!

mzmum · 28/06/2009 21:57

Hi, have been reading this thread with interest as just bought my Cobb with griddle last week (and this week I couldn't help myself also ordering the frying pan and wok too as sooooooo impressed with the whole damn thing!!!!)
I actually think it looks quite small and was worried DH would laugh at its small size - however we did a dinner party for 6 on it last weekend - using griddle to do "hot rock/pierrade" type affair with pieces of raw meat, prawns & scallops - was fantastic.

So, now I have used my Cobb 3 times, am very disappointed that I can't get it back to its beautiful shiny silver new look. Anyone else got the same problem?? I'm talking about the moat bit by the way. I know, I know, it's a BBQ and this will happen but even though my cleaning skills aren't exactly Kim & Aggie, I didn't think it would discolour and look burnt this quickly.....

Any ideas? Or is this far too serious a problem for your lighthearted gone off the subject Cobb thread??!!

Slubberdegullion · 29/06/2009 10:05

mz, no my Cobb is all stained to buggery by the red wine I liberally sloshed all over it on saturday. It's OK though, it is a utililitairian piece of kit so I don't mind it looking used . Don't they call it a patina or summat anyway, you know like on a wok?

Pumpkin, yes the issue of the non whistling kettle will have to be rectified next year. I have done too much camping kit rectification this year and the poor old credit card is smoking.

Peachy you never know. If we get mn Cobb sales up to 10 then we could nag them for treat for you.

How big is it when not in use? Trying to figure out if I could squeeze it into my campervan?

Slubberdegullion · 29/06/2009 13:56

hmmm it's about yay by yay big
.

[helpful]

I'm trying to think how big it is, in relation to something else.

It's about the same roundness as a potty, but rounder and as tall as oooh ummm a washing up bowl on its side.

that is so crap sorry.

It fits very nicely into the Cobb carry bag, apart from the griddle and frying pan and wok, which don't BUT I have just cunningly (and attractively) re-homed in the freebie beach bag that comes with this month's In Style magazine.

I've fitted my griddle & roasting rack in no problems. Am also convinced I will get the frying pan & wok in along with some Cobblestones in the moat - I have to as will be no space left in the car! Have you tried turning the lid upside down and using that cardboard with the hole in like it arrived in?? - then stack all the accessories inside lid/ upside down etc.!! I will manage it....
Stripey, I reckon it must be smaller than a normal portable BBQ anyway.
Slubber, glad yours is dirty too!

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 29/06/2009 15:11

yay by yay PMSL

It'snot too gert, would that be mroe concise?

(size specs are on cobb website)

And ours didnt come up silver after either, but as Slubber says tis utilitarian kit- don't want it to look unused LOL (campers get kudos points for the more they're out )

VanillaPumpkin · 29/06/2009 19:36

I have now ordered a Maxcold cool box and finally the roof box to put it all in. My poor poor credit card. I am going to have to bury it until next year........

Cobb arrives tomorrow!!! Could have done with it today as we have just had a power cut and I had to cook our (thankfully one pot) dinner on the single burner.

Oooh excited.

Is there any food you would recommend I get with my Tesco order tomorrow so that I can make the most of it???

mzmum · 29/06/2009 20:31

VanillaP, I am about to buy a roofbox, very scary.... which one did you go for please?

If you have a griddle then I can recommend a French type brasserade/ pierrade/ hot rock affair with pieces of steak/ lamb/ fish/ prawns etc. and some nice sauces & a Potato Dauphinoise - but hey that's just our taste!

daisydancer · 29/06/2009 20:44

Our Cobb arrived today! DH has just cooked lamb burgers (lamb mince mixed with chopped fresh mint, shaped into burgers and then sprinkled on either side with cracked black pepper) on it. Superb. It's been great to read all your tips.

VanillaPumpkin · 29/06/2009 22:06

We got this box as we need it to fit with two bike racks.
It opens both sides which DH assures me will be useful....

VanillaPumpkin · 29/06/2009 22:07

I don't know about the box yet but I can definitely recommend that site!

mzmum · 29/06/2009 22:26

Aaah, v.interesting Vanilla as I too was keen on the Kamei! Am now completely justified in buying the Kamei Corvara 475 at £300+...... whoops!!!

VanillaPumpkin · 30/06/2009 22:26

My Cobb is here! It is truly fabulous to look at .
I will have to fire it up for a test cook tomorrow I feel......Hmmm what should I do????

Incidentally the recipe book says about using pans and frying pans that aren't the Cobb ones (though obviously the Cobb ones would be better and I now want all the accessories )....

nikkid21 · 30/06/2009 23:02

I've read all of this thread but still can't come to any conclusion as to which cobb to get and whether to go for heat beads or cobble stones.

I;m thinking that I will definitely want the griddle and roasting rack accessories wise. Will that cover most cooking options ? We will still take our 2 ring gas burner as well.

I will probably only take the Cobb to campsites that don't allow campfires as we are already well set up for campfire cooking. Can someone who had ordered recently tall me how long it took from ordering to delivery. I need to time buying so that I have it delivered when DH is on an early shift so that I can hide it in the trailer

Slubberdegullion · 01/07/2009 16:29

Yay Vanilla Have you used it yet?

nikki ours came very quickly. Within about 3 days of ordering I think. We got the whole kit and caboodle as I can imagine using all the bits and bobs at some point. I did initially do a when the wok thing came out of its box but having used it on sunday to make a big batch of sloppy ratatoille I think it's fab. Haven't used the griddle or frying pan yet but am planing to take them away this weekend.

The cobblestones were very good. They only smoke for 2 or 3 mins and then you can start cooking.

nikkid21 · 01/07/2009 18:03

Thanks slubberdegullion. If I was too cheap to buy the wok do you think I could just put my small handleless camping pan in instead?

We're off to Las Vegas on Monday for our wedding anniversary and i'm planning on visiting one of the huge outdoor world stores there. Google Bass Pro to see what I mean.

Will see what they have before I buy a Cobb. The American camping stuff is so much cheaper that i'm taking an empty suitcase. Not sure if my luggage allowance will allow for a cast iron dutch oven & tripod

Slubberdegullion · 01/07/2009 18:26

Wow have a fabulous time, and Happy Anniversary. I bet the Americans have the most amazing selection of camping kit. Come back and tell us what you saw so we can all and .

I reckon a handless pan would be fine. I's not going to melt or explode is it. The wok that comes with the cob fits exactly so makes good use of all the heat, but anything smaller will still fry the food I imagine.

nikkid21 · 01/07/2009 18:37

I have my eye on this for campfire cooking here at around £13.

Was at this girly pink air rifle in the kids dept. here

Slubberdegullion · 01/07/2009 18:42

lol I knew the Americans would trump us lot at random camping clart. The pie oven is extremely odd. I have no words about the pink rifle.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 01/07/2009 22:19

Could you do a lasagne in a cob?

If you have a hob as well to brown the meat off first.

Slubberdegullion · 02/07/2009 13:55

umm I guess so, you'd have to find an oven dish that fits inside but I don't see why not.

VanillaPumpkin · 02/07/2009 18:38

Well I cooked new potatoes, carrots and brocolli yesterday in the moat and had burgers and sausages on the top.
It was great but lessons were learnt (like wrapping the foil parcels for the veg up too big and the sausages slipping down the sloping non stick thing and not getting the burgers on quite early enough....BUT overall it was a great success

I think I was a bit ambitious for a first trial. The vegetables were all lovely though. I am away this weekend and will be cooking a chicken on my roasting rack.

I would like a griddle and one of the pans in an ideal world but I am more than happy.

I used firelighters and heat beads but have cobblestones too.

Can I ask how you clean yours?
I put soapy water in the moat as recommended and then realised I couldn't actually do anything with it as the ashes were so hot, so the moat bit had to wait til the morning to be cleaned .

Bananas and chocolate def on the cards for the weekend. Yummy.

(Oh and the roof box is here and is just right for us. Not huge though.....And the cool box is here too and looks great too. !!!)
