Peachy, I think you need to tell us all about the Cobb.

I accidentally watched the promo video a few days ago. I think I probably need one now dagnamit.

So you need to give us the complete low down.

Did you get the full all singing all dancing set?

What fuel do you use?

Have you really cooked a whole chicken in it? was it a moist bird?

And jacket spuds?

How much can you shove in there?

is it a pita to clean?

How long does it stay hot for, so can you do your fish and then stick some bananas in foil in afterwards?

How high up on your list of essential camping kit is in now?

can you get them in different colours so I can get one to match my tent

Tell me us EVERYTHING.

please

Tsk!

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 09:56

Oh the heat- with cobblestones, about 2 minutes to heat max

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 09:58

We don't use for brekkie (running between posts to stop ds4 turning things on LOL), e use a frying pan on a single burner.

Shocked that one cracked but I bet it'd have been replaced if you complained (try now perhaps?)- one thing I like about Cobb is that if we damage or wear out bits the components are available separately on their site- am clumsy to an esxtreme so a big plau for us.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 10:05

Oh and the cake thing- I am going to do it but for experiment purpsoes mainly. And the bread also, will be fun - an imagine the smell! Yum!

You do need a single burner stove alongside but we take a stove head that interchanges with the gas lamp cannister anyhow. Lakeland BTW are doing a postage offer on items until the end of the month, and that includes cobbs and cobblestones.

The stones lastedas well, so we foundwecould make dinner then do cocoa on same stone later

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 12:06

thanks for replying Peachy, I was beginning to wonder if I had overstepped the mark with the doormat jibe and I was persona non grata.

I'm going to do some internet research later to find if anything can beat the ukcs price (and if it is still available). Was in Lakeland today and saw the cobblestones but the Cobb shelf itself was bare. I wonder if this thread is already having an impact on highstreet sales?

sorry should be a after last sentence, I doubt we will see a Waitrose baby bottom butter run after a thread in little olde camping topic.

Peachy, one (final?) question, as it doesn't get hot would you ever say light it up and stick the chicken in, lid on, and then put it somewhere safe (like in a zipped up side porch or utility tent ) and then go out for a walk? Or is it just nor worth the risk?

amazonianwoman · 23/06/2009 13:06

Dunno if I'd leave it inside the tent/porch? (you'd have to give the tent a good airing to get rid of carbon monoxide fumes) but I've left mine outside the tent with a chicken roasting and gone off for shower/dish washing etc. You could smell the chicken all the way down to the shower block - lots of envious looks from other campers

Actually, I'd possibly leave it on the ground in the porch?

Beer bread didn't work, off to have another try if I can find a stray bottle of beer...

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 13:27

I wouldn't, i'm funny about tent cooking anyway- we used a pinic table last time but would happily place in porch yes and wander off, there was someone near us died in a tent from CO fumes so very careful.

chevre · 23/06/2009 13:30

so is this cobb affair better than one of those gas bbqs with a dome lid?

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 13:39

Cadac type jobs?

I would say so, but OTOH we got a lot of use out of our big Camping Gaz grill and whilst teh Cobb is better, it was a present and nice rather than an essential IYSWIM

chevre · 23/06/2009 13:42

yes teh cadac jogs! how is it better - i fully understand the whole present and loving it thing but i need to make a decision re. outdoor cooking bbq type thing for camping. i am guessing the gaz affair would be more convenient re. mess etc.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 13:53

Hmm, well size of Cobb is smaller and that helps in a apcked car, and its nto ahrd to clean at all in fact as the cobblestone just turns to white dust. But other than I think its preference- I like the range of extras for the Cobb that is available on their site, and I want to try smoking things with it etc which is what sold me.

DH says: a big plus ids the cool wall effect, if it satrts raining you can just pick itb up and moce it uner shelter, you've got a built in moat for boiling veg or rice, things stay moist if you place water or wine in the moat when cooking meat or fish, and you don't need a big gas cycliner to transport- the stones are about the size of your hand and just slot in. It's easy to know you've got enough fuel as it is one a meal (lasts 2-3 hours); we've been caught out by running out gas before.

But the cadacs are nice, I've drolled over (not literally LOL- that would be nasty) them in the past also

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 13:54

Good Lord, someone on a campsite you were staying at died Peachy? How awful .

You know I would never cook in the Cabanon No, I mean on the camping table in the utility tent (no sig, has vents) and potter off to shower/site shop without leaving dh to sit outside and stand guard. As you guys are happy with the potter-off I'll blame you if my utility is razed to the ground

Well I've bought it now, the ukcs deal. In the "where did you hear about us section" I put in ukcs AND mumsnet. We shall see what bonus deals are forthcoming

Someone living near us Slubber, not camping..... though when we were on honeymoon someone on our cruise died so that has indeed happened to us.

Weldome to the club Slubber

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 14:02

so easily done I suppose if you are not used to cooking with portable gas.

on a brighter note

yay for being in the club

Even MORE of a reason for a mn camping meet up, we can identify ourselves with the Cobb by the porch (and the mooncup bunting)

OP posts:
PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 14:05

I bought fairycake buntin on ebay like this for my tent, though DH still unimpressed (told him I need a girls touch coz of too many men thing LOL)

Yes we do need a camping meet up, absolutely.

chevre · 23/06/2009 14:10

lol @ drool - yes a meet up would be good and we could have a cook off with my cadac (as yes in my dreams) and your cobb. or we could all jsut turn up with cobbs and russle up a hugenormous feast.

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 14:15

LOL I Love it, and why the hell not! iirc your tent is blue as well, a woman needs a bit of decoration imo.

I'll not tell dh though, he is the lone male of the family. I wonder what he would like on his bunting...maybe I should string the mallets together (now I have 3 shhh don't let OMDB see) and hang those over the porch.

I always think in June "why don't we meet up" but its always too late to plan it then. We should start discussing it all in October for summer 2010. Will be the best planned meet up mn has ever seen

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 14:16

yy to russling of feast

OP posts:
PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 23/06/2009 14:26

DS1 pointed out skull bunting. I managed to assert authority by claiming it was bought with my upcoming birthday money LOL

We should definitely arrange a meet up for next Spring, when we try on the SN threads there's always someone who can't get to alpces though so the problem is finding a locatioon more than anything I think. Midlands way? Bracelands if people can make that? Mayeb do a survey after the season to see what'scentral and decent

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 14:33

Excellent idea. Start a thread when term has restarted and we can can discuss at great length dates, locations and sites. It could take us all of oct,nov and dec to decide and we can book in january.

That would be nice, I always miss the cmping folk when the weather becomes too inclement to actually camp.

Slubberdegullion · 23/06/2009 14:34
