Warning: Long and boring post but I can't help myself. Feel free to skip - there's not actually anything of value in there, I just had to tell someone that would understand!
Here goes:
Helloooo!! Just finished catch up on all the great weekend chat - I need a glass of my newly acquired cheap wine stash to recover!
Well, first things first: We cheated. Majorly. Twice.
Well, were supposed to leave really, really early on Friday morning, then had a "stuff that" moment when we woke up and moved tunnel crossing later. We then drove most of the way up, but stopped at a hotel nearby as couldn't be bothered to get settled in the dark (any excuse, I love flash hotels). Worked so well, we decided to do the same thing on our return - cycled around area, stopped for coffees and lunch etc, then packed up and left around 4pm on Sunday. Drove until we got a hotel I liked tired, and had a leisurely day today. Had lunch and the obligatory chocolate buying session in Bruges. So really, this is supposed to be reporting back from my camping trip - of which I only really camping for 2 days and one night!
Now the important part: Camping. We'll def go back for a week in summer, that area is beautiful! Campsite was lovely, all green, a stream (but not near our pitch, so can be non-issue for littlies), fabulous children's playgrounds scattered throughout the site. A strange set-up really - I always thought it's private / remote but limited facilities, or good showers, washing machines, etc but people within reach and crowded. Here it had all the facilities you'd need for anything longer than 2 days, but done in such a way that you can still be private if you want to.
De Waard tent feedback: Saturday night we had the worst storm I've ever been in whilst being outside. It was like being in a disco all night - lightning flashes - at times you could see the whole area all lit up! Rain was like buckets for hours on end - I was amazed that it didn't start seeping / misting through after a while. Tent, however, did not even move. Except for the (loud!) sound of the rain and the bright flashes, you would not know there was a storm out there - it is one impressive stormproof tent, and Slubber, you'd love it.
However - and this is probably a good thing taking into account the amount we spent on this holiday - it's not right for us right now. It's big, really good quality canvas (belltent's fabric flimsy in comparison), but that does mean it takes longer to dry out so you'll need space to pitch in your garden if wet camp. Good space for your kitchen stuff in the area in front of bedroom pods thingies, and porch was big enough for us to tuck bikes away.
We hired bikes and a childseat for the two days, which was such a nice way to spend family time together. We're going to buy similar ones for school drop-off / weekend mornings.
Phew. That's me. If you got this far, sorry for mammoth post!
