Has anyone been?
Going?
Is there a festival thread somewhere?

DH booked tickets today. I haven't been to a festival in an age, and DH has only been camping once. We are taking the 3 DC who will be 1, 3, & 9.

Any tips/reassurance?

Thank you 5 go mad, that's very helpful.

maristella · 28/07/2011 22:43

BLOODY HELL!!!!!!

If dontcallmebaby hadn't mentioned the tickets I really would not have brought them Shock Shock Shock

luciadilammermoor · 01/08/2011 09:06

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

Home again, washing marathon beginning. So worth it. Wow. Kids loved Mr Tumble and the Gruffalo, we loved the evening music but shame we had to take turns (will drag suggest to friends thay come with us next year for mutual babysitting purposes).

Tent worked too - sooooo many belltents in camping plus! Next year we should have a Mumsnet flag or something, I kept on wondering about people...

I was at the silent disco - anyone else? DD2 didn't like it so we didn't stay long though.

fivegomadindorset · 01/08/2011 09:32

We loved it to, just had a straggler knock on our door asking if we could order a taxi for him as he had run out of battery, can't have been more than 16.

sfxmum · 01/08/2011 11:25

hello campers Grin
we had a brilliant time, think I spotted the man in princess costume, green and yellow? if so we probably are in your pictures Wink

we went to family silent disco on Saturday I think it was brilliant fun and dd loved it, she went back later for DJ Yoda set.

totally missed mrT, dd now 6 and saw him last year a few times, we did the ballet flash mob thing it was very amusing

for my part it was lovely to be left alone for a quiet set of folk music from Lau.
we all got sunburnt. we left after a game of crazy golf and watching most of the Primal Scream set, watched the fireworks on way to car park and got home at 2am

5gomad, many thanks, reception was patchy and I could not get back the 3G in time

Bearcrumble · 01/08/2011 20:18

We had a great time - sorry didn't see any of you at the silent disco, I didn't realise what a big tent the big top would be. I think DH lost the DJ duel quite comprehensively so I went and hid round the back in shame...

Here's DS and I waiting for the fancy dress parade to start: farm7.static.flickr.com/6002/5998038976_319bed556e.jpg

Curlybrunette · 01/08/2011 21:06

What a bloody amazing weekend. I can not stop telling people how brilliant it was. There was so much to do, absolutely fantastic.

I think for us the only negative was the amount of walking, we were at the bottom of the hill, just in the line between green and purple and it was such a trek to get over to the little big top area (? upper kids field). I aren't blaming Camp Bestival for that I know from other festivals that's just the way festivals are, but ds2 found it a bit much (he's 3.8) bless him he was made to walk miles. We took our Phil and Teds but knackered the wheel getting it from the car to the tent so only used it on a night when the boys went to sleep. Next year we'll get a trolley.

All in all though we have had a brilliant weekend and I can't wait for next year.

Highlights for me:
Cuban Brothers
Gruffalo (2nd showing, Sunday in the big top - storyteller was so funny)
General laid back lovliness

Highlights for my boys:
The bouncing castle
Playing in the little ones area where there was the stars hanging from the ceiling, there was the bit at the back with the little diggers and all the seeds on the floor (does that make sense!?!)

I take my kids on a 6 hour journey to the greatest festival ever and they only remember a bouncy castle and playing with seeds. Tsk, bloody charming

twinklypearls · 01/08/2011 21:12

Curly we must have been camped near you, my feet and legs are killing me. Were you in the very glamourous bell tent set up near the loos with the lanterns and candelabras?

sfxmum · 01/08/2011 21:20

we were far too near to the grill wish they stopped the music a bit earlier
did anyone do the ballet flashmob? very funny to watch the older and the youngest having a blast and the in betweens determined to look to cool to care

twinklypearls · 01/08/2011 21:27

We intended to camp well into the purple field bur could not face the hill. On reflection I think we picked a good spot as the noise and litter put me off camping closer.

We definitely were glad of our trolley .

luciadilammermoor · 01/08/2011 21:58

Bearcrumble, was it your DS up on stage with your DH at the silent disco who had a shoutout for M.._.? He's sooooo sweet! I just thought it summed up the festival for me - that a dad could do that with his son while DJ'ing. I thought the silent disco was brilliant, first time I've ever done something like that.

highlights for me & DH - Blondie, House of Pain, the lindyhop/bollywood dancing, the jazz/folk stuff on the bandstand, dressing up!

highlights for DC - The house of fairy tales (fab! DD1 wanted to live there), Mr T, The Gruffalo (we were at the Sun Big Top performance too - I agree, bloody excellent 'filling skills'!), jousting, craft stuff in tents, knit tent, huge bubble wands, DS (17 mths) loved the soft play tent, dressing up!

I'd be keen to go next year, but it did leave me wondering if it would be good to try a smaller festival as well, just to compare. There were areas we just didn't get to properly, such as Dingly Dell.

Stase · 01/08/2011 22:11

Third load of laundry on now, children tucked up, dreaming of 'Sparklies'. I think the finale fireworks were a revelation for them, they had eyes like saucers. Grin

We were in the camper van field, about as far as you could get from the action, and a bloody steep hill in either direction, not much fun when 33 weeks preg, but was very proud of DS2, who is only 2.5, stomping back under his own steam at gone 11pm. DS1, who is nearly 5 was in the buggy fast asleep.

Highlights... girls' night out for Blondie and Laura Marling, girls' night in for Mark Ronson, pulled pork burrito, a cheeky (weak) spiced rum and coke, craft with the boys, helter skelter with DS1, of course the fireworks and amazing projections, and really just the general festival atmosphere. There was so much we missed, but everything we saw was amazing.

Definitely up for 2012 Olympics themed fun, but will wait until after van MOT to book tickets. Had to bump start her to get home this morning Sad

Loved it, and kept thinking how lucky my boys are to be taken to things like this. Smile

Bearcrumble · 01/08/2011 22:14

Lucia No, I think that was the other guy, Dan Greenpeace - the one on the left if you are looking up at the stage. I did pop on very briefly with DS to say hi to his daddy but DH forgot to mention Mumsnet.

Best bits for me were the fancy dress, the Pimms bus, little circus tent where I learned how to spin a plate on a stick, bubbles everywhere and coming across a herd of random peacocks in the dingly dell trail.

Strangest conversation I has was trying to persuade some idiot 9-year-olds not to snort granulated sugar.

Curlybrunette · 01/08/2011 22:21

twinkly no the belltent wasn't mine but I only wish it was! I was gorgeous. There was another a bit along that had Cath Kidston bunting all around it, just beautiful.

2012 Olympic themed, how cool. I want to buy tickets NOW!

Curlybrunette · 01/08/2011 22:22

I actually meant the belltent was gorgeous, not sure if I could have been described as gorgeous after 4 days of no showering or hairwashing!

twinklypearls · 01/08/2011 22:31

We had areas we didn't go to. I also had a few hours child free and chilled out in the literary tent which gave the festival an even different vibe.

I was rather smelly and managed to have both frizzy and greasy hair which is quite an achievement.

I am booking my tickets for next year asap

MarionCole · 01/08/2011 22:43

I'm a bit tired. Took 6 hours to get home.

twinklypearls · 01/08/2011 22:47

We are only up the road, I am still exhausted. I have slept most of the day.

fivegomadindorset · 01/08/2011 22:54

Lucky you twinkly.

Just had one of the jousters round for supper with his wife and some friends, back to reality tomorrow.

DontCallMeBaby · 01/08/2011 23:58

Hello all, finally back to normality (boo). It took us 6.5 hours to get home today, thanks to the queues to get offsite, a rather long stop for an oddly timed lunch from Blandford Tesco, my insane satnav's decision to take us through Bath, and DD managing to leave her teddy behind in the 30 seconds she was in phoebechicken's house when we dropped them off (they're only 15 minutes away so going back wasn't a great hardship, but I could have wept, we were SO NEAR TO HOME). But it was actually okay, and the girls were stars on both journeys and pretty much all weekend (esp phoebechicken's 4yo who just kept on trucking while the other two had their little spats).

Chuffed to hear I SAVED maristella's festival with my ticket reminder!!

Anyway - loved it. I'm not really recognising the festival some people are talking about on the forum and on Facebook, with disgusting toilets, rowdy teens and aggressive security. A few loos were dodgy, and it was annoying when they ran out of paper (I'm guessing they're designed to take a paltry two loo rolls at a time for damage limitation if some idiot decides to stuff the lot down the loo?) but infinitely better than what I remember of Reading way back in the mists of time. We were only out 'late' last night though, so I guess that accounts for missing the rowdiness.

Getting in on Thursday and getting set up was SO awful though. We ended up parked in the Red carpark, not far from the boundary with Folly, and first had to walk all the way past Tangerine Fields to get a trolley, then back, then two trips to and from the campsite - roughly in the middle of Purple, a bit towards the Red side I guess - and then back to return it, through the carpark the way we'd come as it was dark and I had no idea how to get to the trolley place through the campsites, if that was even possible. It was exhausting, and we had the trolley for three hours (they very kindly only charged us for two). It was just massively disorientating, not at all clear what was where. Couldn't tell from maps how you could get (or not get) from a carpark to a campsite.

Next year ... we'll buy a trolley and damn well fit it in the car SOMEHOW. And considering Camping Plus, but not hearing such good things about it, so not sure. I'd like to hear that they don't plan to make it any bigger, as I thought it was just fine as it was, a bit smaller would be nice, but certainly no bigger.

Loved the silent disco - no chance of finding a bunch of random strangers in there though, was there?! DD got a bit confused and thought when people were cheering and she wasn't being asked to that she was on the 'wrong' channel. I kept switching between the two, as neither completely suited me - didn't like the rock theme MrBearCrumble went off on, as I don't do air guitar, and thought the other guy would have done better to have been a bit more mainstream given the preponderance of old farts in the crowd, dance stuff that we've heard of ... but I'm picky, everyone seemed to be having a good time!

Personal highlight was DD developing a mad dance style that's a cross between bodypopping and traditional Irish dance, and doing it at every opportunity, including on the Cocktails and Dreams stage.

luciadilammermoor · 02/08/2011 00:09

curious now, what bad things did you hear about camping plus? I was there and thought it was fab.

luciadilammermoor · 02/08/2011 00:47

Ah, have read forum comments. Although the water in the sinks ran out on Thursday in Camping plus, I took spray hand disinfectant and spare toilet roll anyway so wasn't too bothered by that. It's true that there were queues for showers but I found that by going at 6.30am or c.8pm it wasn't a problem and the showers were cleaned in the early evening, which was an incentive!

I also took travel johns for emergencies with small children, avoiding the walk to the loos, so the negatives of camping plus as described were not something I found. Plus we were checked on entry every time we went in so I felt very safe with three small children.

twinklypearls · 02/08/2011 04:38

On one of the nights there were some rowdy teenagers, Friday I think. We witnessed the build up to a fight but security dealt with it.

I was not in camping plus, thought toilets generally were fine. The queues prevented me from getting a shower though.

fivegomadindorset · 02/08/2011 08:20

There were alot more obnoxious teens there this year that had obviously been dumped by Mummy and Daddy with a whole load of drink. They mainly came out to play in the evening.

vbus · 02/08/2011 08:34

I thought the festival was brill, all of us really enjoyed it. DS1 was sad to leave!

Totally agree Gruffalo was excellent, liked the adult humour in it too. Kids loved Mr T and Zingzillas, and we loved the bands Mark Ronson, Blondie etc. The boys loved that circus play area and yes my youngest liked that bit with the seeds and digger toys too! Dh loved the River Cottage demos. So many highlights.

We must've got lucky and found a good camping spot in purple on red border 5mins walk from arena so not too much walking for the kids. It was a trek for Dh though lugging the stuff from car but at least once we were set up we could relax for the rest of wkend. We took pushchair and used that to transport our stuff it took 3 trips. Ds2 slept in it in evening. I thought toilets were fine, I saw them refilling toilet roll and they were emptied daily which is more than some festivals do.
