Has anyone been?
Going?
Is there a festival thread somewhere?

DH booked tickets today. I haven't been to a festival in an age, and DH has only been camping once. We are taking the 3 DC who will be 1, 3, & 9.

Any tips/reassurance?

Oh good, I'm glad I was wrong about that, we have a sort of two ring hob thing with a gas bottle, as you say, doesn't do much but at least beans on toast for breakfast, I do like a cooked breakfast when camping Grin. The more I think about it, the more excited I get! We are going on from there to the Isle of wight where we've hired a camper. I think I was inadvertently channelling Enid Blyton when I booked our holidays this year. Oh, super! Grin

lashing of ginger bear and fruit cake with cream
funny last year had a conversation with someone from the Isle of Wright while waiting for the showers

that would be beer don't think old Enyd was that fond of bears in her stories

Oh yes, and tinned peaches. I think the isle of wight would be the perfect place to grow up, until you were about 12, then you would want to move to Manchester or something. Anyway, I seem to have veered off topic here...

I think we'll be eating pringles and site food. Grin

I have bought ear defenders today and a flowery headband thing.

I've bought a dress, but it may be too small. Ohh er.
I've got DS a dragon costume. DH may be a knight so he can slay him. (Not really you understandGrin)

My friend has now bought a bell tent (and is camping in it RIGHT NOW). Envy

I've told her we can all sleep in it and put all the crap camping essentials in mine. She's agreed to it, but I suspect grudgingly. :o

Meanwhile I'm dithering about buying a new family tent, but I suspect it will be academic and we'll take the naffo tent anyway. I'm also compiling a things to take list, which veers from the extremely sensible to the ... well, the bunting. And solar fairy lights.

QueeferSutherland · 31/05/2011 22:28

Ah, yes the bunting!Grin

My list is like that, baby. I told DH I had aquired some rugs that I pilfered from my mother , and he said "oh, well, we're sorted then.Hmm Never mind we haven't got a tent."

I have me a dress. Ace.

Do you think we should get badges, or will we recognise each other by the nice ham sarnies & penguin bars?

Badges? there is a boden tent with coffee shop, say no more

Report
DontCallMeBaby · 01/06/2011 11:46

We should set a time - in the Boden tent, nice ham sandwich in one hand, coffee in the other, talking loudly about this season's school run dress. I will be the one demanding to know why they only have a shower proof coat in the autumn preview (honestly, what country do they think we're living in?)

On a more glamorous note, here is aforementioned friend on costume inspiration.

We're going. First timers. Am ordering costumes this week. princesses a go-go!
DH not convinced or being persuaded easily. Is anyone's DH dressing up? How did you do that then?

Vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv excited!

we are going.

we went last year too. loved it.

the girls are excited already.

will ponder re: dress up. dd2 would love it, I expect. but would lso require several changes, and a whole car full of accessories Grin. dd1 would also love it, but would wear the same thing for the whole 4 days. hmm. maybe not.

will be nice to have the extra time this year - we were delayed setting off last year, so didn't arrive til nearly 4 on the Friday, and then had ot get programme/try to get organised etc. was a scramble, and we nearly missed Mr Tumble's first performance Shock Shock

I remember that mrT first performance on the band stand several toddlers went after him and ignored their parents, many warning of 'keep hold of your children' followed Grin

I have ordered illoom balloons, glowsticks, pelton ear defenders, pirate bunting, princess costumes.

Need dress that fits medieval costume for me & something suitable for DS (17 months by then).

Might need solar fairy lights, hadn't thought of that. How about a pull-along truck/folding wheelbarrow?

Any other essentials for a festival virgin?

don't forget the calpol and the basic first aid type stuff like indigestion tablets and plasters, warm clothes, socks, waterproof something, flash lights.

Gah, got to get on the case with my shopping, I have nothing (I said that up thread and it's still true). Sadly I have cropped my flowing locks so don't think I can carry off pre-raphelite dontcallmebaby.

I'm veggie so you'll never spot me! We have some iloom balloons given to dd2 by mil, I suspect she has no idea how festival on-trend she is! Bunting is a must, might try & make some...(fowl waves as pigs flap past).

No progress on the tent, I want an outwell, cos mumsnet says so, dh wants vango cos wallet says so. At least we are agreed in principle on a new tent!

Pmsl at Mr Tumble as Mr T. How do you sign "I pity the fool..."

We are going but have a nice house to go home to and a babysitter Grin, food is expensive, no glass allowed on site but you cna take stuff in in plastic bottles, They tend to park cars so that you cna get out, Spar in Wool is OK and Wareham.

Sorry about the animals, we have got some of the sheep and the donkey (Shergar) is in the village.

A plea though, please don't use the chinese lanterns, a friends house nearly went up in smoke last year.

Report
DontCallMeBaby · 01/06/2011 22:02

Me neither, Fowl - never had flowing locks. I will be attempting 'elderly but still buxom serving wench, recovering from ringworm'. Or something. I can at least make sure my hair is freshly dyed a pre-Raphaelite tone.

I think you'll be in heaven as a veggie though - aforementioned friend was veggie at Camp Bestival last year and is now vegan, and she had loads of lovely food. I looked at the food stall list for last year and would have happily gone vegetarian for the weekend myself, and am normally staunchly omnivorous.

No Chinese lanterns. Check. Things I DON'T have to buy are very good. I'm going to need a trailer on my not-small car at this rate.

I'm going to go and check out costumes. My credit card month rolls around tomorrow so I can start spending again ...

sfxmum · 01/06/2011 22:07

last year we were worrying about those lanterns seems fine by the water but there. although pretty, it did not look terribly safe

Report
fivegomadindorset · 01/06/2011 22:10

NO they are not, as most of the village has thatched roofs it always seemed stupid to me.

Hello, I am DontCallMeBaby's aforementioned friend!

We deliberately camped in the non family bit last year as I'm a member of the Camp Bestival forum and that's where the special forum camping happened to be. It was grim as hell though so we'll just wave at them all in passing this year.

This is my review of what actually happened there: madameguillotine.org.uk/2010/08/01/camp-bestival

Went last year, some of the pitches are not on the flat, so look out for ones that are!

Showers were fantastic, but so busy so get up early and take a magazine.

Take in your own drink in can/plastic, save some money.

I laminated a little bit or card with my DS name and then some mobile numbers on it (mine, Dh, friends) just in case he got lost. It was on a bit of elastic and I just looped it to his belt loop. He was 18m when we went.

Food is delicious, but expensive, so factor that in if you are on a budget.

The site is small, and so is the camping, so you are never Too Far. I would recommend camping near the CamperVan bit as very flat, near one of the showers and about 10m to the site.

Lots of people had these to transport their stuff to the camp site and then we saw lots of kids in them later in the eve with balnkets etc sleeping.

SO costumes then? Shall we move on to them? I spent far too long... ahem, several hours looking at options and am now wanting to spend too much £ on a one-off costume.

like this one

this cheaper option

love this but possibly not strictly medieval

Anything cheaper? Any patterns? Might make one cos I have lots of time am obsessed now.
