OMG I really want a cobb oven for camping this year

...and I just spent £70 on a three ring burner last year and I can't even remember how much on the large gas bottle to go with it..... :(

They look so good!!!
We're a vegetarian family so camping i found it a bit limiting with just stove top, to be able to bake pizza and bread and things would be amazing.
Seriously, are they as good as they look?
Could I could a large pizza, and vegetables and potatoes all at once? Are they expensive to run (if we got one we would use it for evening meal and a one ring burner for boiling water for tea/coffee)
Or should I just stick to our burner that has only been used for one week last summer!!!!
I know it's only january but already I am dreaming about getting out in our bell tent again.... speaking of that, could we use it to cook inside our bell tent or not? We didn't use or camping stove inside last year, we cooked in front of the tent...

We have done Salmon steaks, wrap them in foil, a little seasoning and a slice of lemon, cook for about 20 mins. But also done whole fish the same way and as it sort of smokes them it is just delirious.

Our friends have a big kadac and it is much quicker but harder to clean and does not cook so beautifully (they set their sausages on fire which would be hard to do with a cobb).

Loving this talk of camping and making me wish my life away waiting for warmer months...

Smile thank you.

Have just ordered some Cobblestones and smoking chips from Lakeland, as we can't find any bbq briquettes in B&Q (they are 'skied' apparently, which means they have put them in the roof where no-one can reach them till spring Hmm) or anywhere else at the moment.

DuplicitousBitch · 06/01/2011 18:39

they are very expensive aren't they?

slubber - how long do you think 2m of bunting would burn for?

sethstarkaddersmum · 06/01/2011 18:52

do you mean Cobbs or Cobblestones?
Yes, Cobbs are about a hundred pounds and Cobblestones work out at about £1.50 a go.
I'll probably use briquettes normally though. And gas canisters always seem quite pricey.
As a replacement for instant barbecues it doesn't really make much financial sense.

yes indeed, so you can take it on boats without fear of scorching anyone's prized teak decks etc.

Slubberdegullion · 07/01/2011 10:42

DB 2m of shop bought bunting will burn for 3 mins and 14 seonds.

2m of kath kidson bunting will burn or 4 mins 22 seconds.

2m of I-made-it-myself-cupcake-bunting bunting will last a litle longer than that, depending on if the be-bunted materials are fire retardant.

DuplicitousBitch · 07/01/2011 11:59

roar @ alan

so 2 families of ponces staying in an overpriced yurt should roast 5 chickens?

SeaShellsDreamingOfSummer · 07/01/2011 12:37

Grin I should think so duplitiousbitch. If they brought a cat too you should definitely have enough cooking time Wink

sethstarkaddersmum · 07/01/2011 14:02

I have bunting (Xmas pres from SIL, along with solar-powered fairy lights so I can go all glampy) but not enough to roast a chicken.

SeaShellsDreamingOfSummer · 07/01/2011 14:25

I don't have bunting, but do have kitch wind spinners as Ds is a toddler and loves them!

I have glamping envy but like my functional tent too...

Slubberdegullion · 07/01/2011 14:37

My predictions for the spring/summer 2011 seasoned glamper are:

Fairy lights: OUT.
Darling little votives made out of baked bean tins with punched out hole pictures of chickens and otters so the light peters out: IN

Bunting:OUT
Paper chains in light floral colours (made from oil cloth so not to spoil in the syphilitic weather): IN
Windspinners - dunno what a wind spinner is? Sounds most glamperish so long as not plastic: IN

Tangly haired children with jam jars of minnows on a rope swing: OUT
Random male tent lodger (not a euphemism) with knowledge of fungi and rabbit skinning: IN

SeaShellsDreamingOfSummer · 07/01/2011 15:55

I think you may well be right Slubber!

(windspinners-windmills, big flower like things and kite type things that twirl in the wind. Of no meteological or energy generating use what so ever, just justify a roof box even more as they come under "essential junk")

sethstarkaddersmum · 07/01/2011 16:21

are Cobbs glamping chic then? Or are we meant to be doing our cooking on campfires/the woodburning stove in the yurt?

Slubberdegullion · 07/01/2011 16:21

you could classify them under 'make pitch easily spottable from a distance for small lost children'. That's pretty practical. SAFETY FIRST and all.

Slubberdegullion · 07/01/2011 16:23

Cobbs are not glamping!

heavens above.

Cobbs are very VERY utilitarian, sensible and clever.

sethstarkaddersmum · 07/01/2011 16:24
Blush
Slubberdegullion · 07/01/2011 16:25

Ironic bunting is the very worst for flammability. That and the aldi lights and you've got a tinder box scanario just waiting to happen.

Don't say I didn't tell you Butterfly.

Another one lost to the camping dark side of comfort and lovely things that serve no practical purpose.
