OMG I really want a cobb oven for camping this year

...and I just spent £70 on a three ring burner last year and I can't even remember how much on the large gas bottle to go with it..... :(

They look so good!!!
We're a vegetarian family so camping i found it a bit limiting with just stove top, to be able to bake pizza and bread and things would be amazing.
Seriously, are they as good as they look?
Could I could a large pizza, and vegetables and potatoes all at once? Are they expensive to run (if we got one we would use it for evening meal and a one ring burner for boiling water for tea/coffee)
Or should I just stick to our burner that has only been used for one week last summer!!!!
I know it's only january but already I am dreaming about getting out in our bell tent again.... speaking of that, could we use it to cook inside our bell tent or not? We didn't use or camping stove inside last year, we cooked in front of the tent...

lol at tent dreaming in Jan. Yes me too Grin

Cobbs ARE fab, there are no two ways about it and you MUST get one.

I have yet to do pizza or make bread but Peachy in whatever name-outfit she is wearing atm has I think.

We use ours mostly for big stews and roasts. I see no reason why you couldn't do pizza on the plate and veggies in the moat. I did a full roast (3 veg) plus yorkies gravy and stuffing all on the cobb. Folk were Envy as they walked past.

They are quite big though and a bit of a sod to fit in with all the rest of the camping stuff, and the cobb stones are not that cheap (probably a quid or over for each one). I think they are worth it because I love food, love cooking and everything is quite slow and sedate and chilled when you are using them. you really need a glass of wine in one hand when you cook on the cobb.

I never cook in our tent, never. There is the fire element, even though the stuff that is burning is quite well protected and the outside doesn't get very hot (apart from the lid). They also release CO. Much safer to do it outside.

bramblebooks · 04/01/2011 16:17

Omg now that is a thought! I thought I had sussed it with toasting both sides of a pizza under our grill with judicious use of silver foil, and doing jacket potatoes which were blanched baby potatoes cooked in foil with a mixture of herbs. Nm nom.

Question for this year is should we get ehu so we can take the artisan for bread ;)

What are Cobb stones?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 04/01/2011 16:25

Yes, I fancy a Cobb too.

So far we have only been camping for 3 nights max and managed with bbq and a ring stove but we are planning 2 weeks this summer so I think we need one!

First though we need to get a new car. This camping lark is so addictive, the main factor in our choice of new car is how much room there is in the boot for all the camping gearGrin

DuplicitousBitch · 04/01/2011 16:27

tradition demands that i come on and start banging on about cadac chefs - they are bloody brilliant.

notwavingjustironing · 04/01/2011 16:29

aah how lovely. Camping threads in Jan.I had Cobb envy last year too.

blowninonabreeze · 04/01/2011 16:37

All I've been thinking about is camping for the past few days, and we've never been before!

I've a belltent coming in April for my birthday and have already booked 10 days in Devon in August and 2 practice weekends closer to home for May and June.

Can't wait.

DB which Cadac Chef do you have? PIL have a large one in their caravan, and I was thinking about the Cadac Safari Chef for use when camping, although I hadn't heard of the Cobb - off to investigate.

SparklyJules · 04/01/2011 17:02

I don't camp and I want one of these! Am thinking of surprising DH with one as a birthday present.

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:08

well that didn't take long for Bitch-face to come along and start with her cadac botherings. Sod off to a new thread you and your gas bottle mrs.

Not you blown. You can stay and we'll convert you to Cobb delights. No gas see. Just you, the cobb, the cobb stone (bramble its I think some sort of reconstituted coconut husk with ignigtion fluid within. They come in a nifty little box of six all individually backages like a soreen loaf slice with butter on, sort of. You light them and wooooooof off they go, smoke for about a minute and then they are hot hot hot and ready to cook on, all glowing and hearty)

where was I

yes, you, the cobb the cobb stone, some sort of lighter and sausages and bacon, maybe some cheese or mushrooms ON THE BEACH. Oh yes there you are eating the delicious perfectly cooked food on the beach. And then when you are done you put the cob back in the natty little cobb satchel and take it home.

then you have to wash the sod up

brilliant

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:12

I am actually thinking of roasting a PORK JOINT on the beach this year, and stuffing.

The family and I will be eating roast pork and stuffing baps sitting on a towel with our feet in the sand.

Can you do that with a cadac can you? Can you?

I don't think so.

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 17:34

Cobbs are ace.

Fact.

we used ours at music festivals last year - both dds are multiple food intolerant, and so we can't ever buy food form stalls for them.

so we did roasts, and curry, and spag bol, and fry ups (natch)

everyone around us was Envy, as htye tucked into standard festival fare.

we regularly use ours at home too .

it's wonderful.

and so easy.

and portable

DuplicitousBitch · 04/01/2011 17:38

anyone who does roast dinner while camping is perhaps missing the point of camping [gets out enormous wooden spoon]

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:39

ooh yes silverfrog you are spot on about the curries. mmm

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 17:40

ah, but we weren't camping Grin

we were festival-ing

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:42

and anyone who thinks they are doing camping being sat on their polyester panted arses in a ginormo highly pimped car with a flimsy little awning should perhaps just maybe get stretched

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:43

silverfrog isn't festivaling just camping but in a BIG field with crappy loos and a band?

Grin
MisSalLaneous · 04/01/2011 17:44

Whey hey, camping porn time again. Grin

DuplicitousBitch, I'll back you up in that Cadac fab! However, then slightly letting the side down by having to admit I would quite like a Cobb too... Mind you, if I add one more thing we'd need to add a trailer to the list.

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:47

shut up Sal

It's either the Cobb or the axis of gas evil cadac.

You choose.

You can't do both on here

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 17:48

oh no. we festivalled in style.

proper four walls (albeit thin, plywood ones Grin) ,carpet, lights, the lot.

yes to very big field, and bands.

loos were actually very good Shock (we used the eco ones that everyone else shunned as you had to "announce you needed a poo by collecting a cup of sawdust on the way in. no queues, no smells, all very pleasant actually Shock Shock)

this year's meal challenge is shepherd's pie (new favourite of dd1's)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 04/01/2011 17:49

DH is trying to convince me we need a new tent (and we only bought one last year). Even more worryingly, I can concede that he has a point (he's suggesting one that is slightly smaller when erected but packs down much smaller). I do rather fancy a Cobb too, mind you. Would it be terribly duplicitous to buy DH one for his birthday?

MisSalLaneous · 04/01/2011 17:50

Hey Slubber. I love you too. Grin

Oh, and not only can you have both, you also need, yes NEED, the Storm Kettle. Life is not worth living without.

activate · 04/01/2011 17:50

cobs are great but I've never made the pizza

you also need a kellys kettle IMO

activate · 04/01/2011 17:50

freaky cross-post - but you need Kellys Kettle not storm Grin

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:51

ooooooh walls eh? Fancy

lol at your cup of poo sawdust.

I reckon you could do a shepherd's pie, you could do jacket spuds in the moat and then scoop out the innards for the topping..

mm

MisSalLaneous · 04/01/2011 17:52

Hahaha. No, a Storm. Apparently less issues with leaking and I've got one so would obviously say that.
