OMG I really want a cobb oven for camping this year

...and I just spent £70 on a three ring burner last year and I can't even remember how much on the large gas bottle to go with it..... :(

They look so good!!!
We're a vegetarian family so camping i found it a bit limiting with just stove top, to be able to bake pizza and bread and things would be amazing.
Seriously, are they as good as they look?
Could I could a large pizza, and vegetables and potatoes all at once? Are they expensive to run (if we got one we would use it for evening meal and a one ring burner for boiling water for tea/coffee)
Or should I just stick to our burner that has only been used for one week last summer!!!!
I know it's only january but already I am dreaming about getting out in our bell tent again.... speaking of that, could we use it to cook inside our bell tent or not? We didn't use or camping stove inside last year, we cooked in front of the tent...

Jesus

and now the kettle folk have invaded

IS NOWHERE SAFE FOR UNADULTERATED COBB CHAT?

MisSalLaneous · 04/01/2011 17:54

Sorry OP, it's the over excitement. The winter's been long...

BackOnceAgain · 04/01/2011 17:54

Just googled it (the Cobb). A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Get one, I'm sure we will now (using all the usual, "but look how much we save just by camping" bollocks" Grin

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 17:55

hooray

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 17:55

honestly, people even averted their gaze if you walked up to the eco loos.

issues, I tell you.

hmm - that's what I was thinking re: shepherd's pie too.

but I might cheat and have it as our first meal - pre-cooked, take down in cool bag and heat through job.

depends on the line up, I suppose. if I want ot hop off and watch, then a quick meal is in order. if I'm content to listen, then the glass of wine in one hand while lovingly tending the cobb is the way to go

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 17:58

doitdoitdoitdoit, backonceagain.

you will never look back.

tis bloody marvellous

VivaLeBeaver · 04/01/2011 18:00

I'm desperate for a Cobb. I have a camper van so have 2x hobs and a grill but miss having an oven. Can do curry/chilli, etc in the van but it would be nice to be able to do pizza or a roast chicken. Keep telling myself though that a trip to Dominows per holiday is cheaper than a Cobb. Can't really justify the expense when I have 2 hobs that I can do loads of stuff on..........

sethstarofbethlehemsmum · 04/01/2011 18:01

I HAVE A COBB!!!!!

Was my Xmas pres. Haven't used it yet (only just got home a couple of hours ago and have no fuel).

It will need thorough testing. What shall I do first?

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:01

silverfrog you may have almost converted me to festivalling. It all sounds very civilised. Are there not hoards of ropey looking teenagers drinking cider and pissing behind the tents?

sethstarofbethlehemsmum · 04/01/2011 18:04

Slubber - I like your roast pork idea but only if the Cobb makes good crackling and that is surely too much to ask?

Batteryhuman · 04/01/2011 18:06

Cobb is lovely but I can't get on with cobb stones. A sack of briquettes is much cheaper ans easier to light. And Slubber festivalling is very civilised if you go to the right one. Try Wychwood on Cheltenham racecourse in June. Fab campsite....

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:06

WELCOME WELCOME seth

I don't think you can beat a garlic and lemon roasted chicken. You can be fancy and do the veg, or kick back and stick it in a bun with the juices running down your elbws

Viva pffft at justifying the cost. This is the camping topic you know where sensibleness for buying extra stuff is lustily ignored (until omdb comes along and glares at us and our foolish ways)

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 18:07

probably, at the trendy festivals.

we hang out at family festivals. much nicer atmosphere, and a great time was had by all.

we stayed in podpads last year - the dds were enchanted - their own little house, with windows/curtains/lights/carpet etc.

of course, the headliners at family festivals are not so great, but there was the lovely Tim Minchin last year, and no pissed teenagers (well, not many)

VivaLeBeaver · 04/01/2011 18:10

How easy are they to clean?

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:10

Not sure about the crackling seth. You could maybe invert the joint at the end, take out the griddle and toast the crackling over the naked cobb stone.

Battery I agree about the cost but there is a knack to lighting them (was it the lighting them that put you off?) They get white hot and smokeless so quickly. I love that, no fart arsing about waiting for the coals.

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 18:10

ooh, yes. a lovely juicy roast chicken is the way to start.

dh did a mean salmon last year, too.

of course, then there's the whole smoking side to things.

hmm, might have to change meal plan for htis week, and shoehorn a cobb meal in...

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:13

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK at the podpads. It's a house for gnomes and pixies

Tim Minchin is one of our local eastate agents, I can't imagine him head lining tbh Wink

Viv they are easy to clean but a pain. All the fat collects in the moat and it is a bit of a gopping job.

silverfrog · 04/01/2011 18:13

Camp Bestival was the highlight for the dds last year - non-stop Mr tumble fest, interspersed with performances of the Gruffalo, and ballet masterclasses with Angelina Ballerina...

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:14

but hey! if you cook someone else has to wash up. That is the rules. So who cares if they are hard to wash up.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/01/2011 18:20

Just me and DD camp as DH is a camping refusenik so I have to do both.

Slubberdegullion · 04/01/2011 18:23

send dd
Grin

It's alright to clean, just quite high up on my list of things that are not that much fun to do on a campsite.

It's a marigolds job.

sethstarofbethlehemsmum · 04/01/2011 18:24

DH grumbled about the cost of the Cobb so I don't think he will appreciate washing it up as well. I don't care though, I like camping washing up.

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 04/01/2011 18:32

I've been dreaming of camping today too...and here you all are for a Cobb love in :)

Wenlove ours, got it last spring and used it for BBQ, camping and hot smoking fish :) it's amazing!

I'm really sad and bought new melamine plates and bowls for this year in the sales, and sadly can't wait for it to arrive Blush

I have the camping books out next to me, just trying to work out the logistics of camping with a 2.5yo Ds and 6mth old dd. It will be fine Hmm Grin

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 04/01/2011 18:35

Dh washes up the Cobb (it's his) he says it's hassle free and easier faffing with our old BBQ, and easier than our stove as you can submerge it (he is sat next to me, joining the Cobb love in...it was his 30th bday Pressie)

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 04/01/2011 18:36

(easier THAN faffing with our BBQ, sorry)
