OMG I really want a cobb oven for camping this year

...and I just spent £70 on a three ring burner last year and I can't even remember how much on the large gas bottle to go with it..... :(

They look so good!!!
We're a vegetarian family so camping i found it a bit limiting with just stove top, to be able to bake pizza and bread and things would be amazing.
Seriously, are they as good as they look?
Could I could a large pizza, and vegetables and potatoes all at once? Are they expensive to run (if we got one we would use it for evening meal and a one ring burner for boiling water for tea/coffee)
Or should I just stick to our burner that has only been used for one week last summer!!!!
I know it's only january but already I am dreaming about getting out in our bell tent again.... speaking of that, could we use it to cook inside our bell tent or not? We didn't use or camping stove inside last year, we cooked in front of the tent...

away with you and your non cobb accessoried canoe bramble

BlueCollie, yes you can! Same time (maybe a wee bit longer) than a normal chicken, and because of the added factor that everything tastes better when cooked and eaten outdoors it will be the best tasting roast chicken you will ever have eaten.

start saving Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 19:32

could you perhaps sit on the sea canoe while waiting for your chicken to roast?

camping is such a cheap holiday you can think of it as easily saving you enough money to buy a Cobb.

I waited for my Cobb anyway - wanted it last summer but made myself get it from dh for Xmas instead. I think everyone should spend a year or so wanting one rather than just promiscuously rushing off to the internet on a passing whim.

bramblebooks · 05/01/2011 19:33

Paddles own canoe.

Tightens chains on hen house.

Nibbles artisan meringue which probably cannot be made on Cobb. Now theres a challenge.

Cobb does indeed sound a beautiful thing.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 19:42

and why wouldn't it be possible to make meringues in a Cobb?

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 19:51

It would be perfectly possible to make a lovely merengue or pavlova base dans le Cobb. however who takes a whisk camping?

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 19:56

bunch of twigs, Slubber.

Tikkabillajive · 05/01/2011 20:33

Sethstarkaddersmum have you spoken to the campsite? If there's a large group of friends going I'd be surprised if they say no to you squeezing on to a friend's pitch. Hope you can get it sorted as it sounds lovely!

I'm wondering about heading to France this summer with our tent. We've only done max 4-nighters so far though so I'm not sure if I am being a bit ambitious. Do love the idea of a bit of warmth though!

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 20:47

Lol @bunch of twigs

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 20:50

and come to think of it, DH has one of those really big Swiss army knives - I bet there is a whisk in there somewhere.

can we have a competition for the most random bit of Cobb catering this summer?

mummyosaurus · 05/01/2011 20:52

Cobbs are fantastic. We've had ours about 4 years and it's great. Not done pizza, but we do do toast on it (try that on a cadac - they'll smell the burning in Pontepandy).

It cooks very slowly, but beautifully. Fish is my favourite (sorry OP, realise you are veggie). Does quorn sausages well, without burning. We have the roasting rack too which is a good addition.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 20:57

What sort of fish do you do on it Mummyosaurus? And do you do them whole or, eg, salmon steaks?

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 20:59

Seth you are ON.

By the end of October I will aim to have cooked something extremely random and/or poncerific on the Cobb.

A pavlova is deffo on the cards.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 21:02

Tikkabilla - fingers crossed Smile
If the site doesn't let us squeeze on, and we have to go somewhere else, we'll have to invite everyone else from the group over for Cobb cuisine one family at a time. They'll go back full of tales of fresh bread and succulent chickens and the others won't believe them Smile

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 21:05

Slubber - dh has just suggested a souffle. Shock

Tikkabillajive · 05/01/2011 21:05

It does sound wonderful (the Cobb I mean). Only thing that worries me is that I'm often a bit disorganised about cooking when we're camping and I can imagine that I'd get all the timings wrong and we would end up just giving the dcs biscuits for supper and then eating at about 1am.

bramblebooks · 05/01/2011 21:35

Could you do a frog within a hedgehog within a pheasant within a badger?

Oh good god I'm definitely going to have to tighten security. Mind you, I keep large fowl, so slubber will have to have a Cobb of entirely different dimensions and with its own utility tent.

sethstarkaddersmum · 06/01/2011 09:26

LOL @ fredgephadger. Will they all be in season at the same time? (Or were you planning to poach them?)

BackOnceAgain · 06/01/2011 09:41

Grin "fredgephadger"

Showed DH, he's sold Smile

So does anyone know of cheaper cobb than £109 delivered? And do you need the extra pan and wok set if you've got a gas burner?

Slubberdegullion · 06/01/2011 09:55

BackOnceAgain I can heartily recommend the wok, it is a pretty big bugger so perfect if you are doing a big stew or curry. My other camping saucepans are piddly in comparison.

Have you checked out if ukcs is still doing a deal?

Slubberdegullion · 06/01/2011 09:56

Oh and bramble you only need to fear for your hens when they stop producing those darling green eggs wot I have partaken of in the past.

BackOnceAgain · 06/01/2011 10:13

Thanks Slubber, I shall check them out.... Also the "big bugger", "stew" and "curry" parts of your sentence means we will deffo get the wok too Grin
