...and I just spent £70 on a three ring burner last year and I can't even remember how much on the large gas bottle to go with it..... :(

They look so good!!!
We're a vegetarian family so camping i found it a bit limiting with just stove top, to be able to bake pizza and bread and things would be amazing.
Seriously, are they as good as they look?
Could I could a large pizza, and vegetables and potatoes all at once? Are they expensive to run (if we got one we would use it for evening meal and a one ring burner for boiling water for tea/coffee)
Or should I just stick to our burner that has only been used for one week last summer!!!!
I know it's only january but already I am dreaming about getting out in our bell tent again.... speaking of that, could we use it to cook inside our bell tent or not? We didn't use or camping stove inside last year, we cooked in front of the tent...

Dh and I are now debating simmer vs boil-he said boil, I say simmer. He is meant to be working from home and I'm distracting him with camping chatter Blush

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 15:40

What are the cooling briquettes? I haven't smoked anything yet. Can you smoke cheese on it?

I have asbestos gullet so need boiling hot tea. A fast simmer would not cut the tea mustard.

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 05/01/2011 15:46

Just as the heat goes out of them you put woodchips on them in a twist of silver foil to get smoke ... Dh found if you put the fish onwhilst they were too hot the fish over cooked and had little taste. I would think it's too hot for cheese, although you may get a melted gooey smokey mess that could taste lovely on toast?!

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 15:53

Mmmm. Like a baked camembert.

Where did you get the smoking chips from?

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 05/01/2011 15:57

We got them from the manufacturers when we bought the Cobb, but I'm sure they must be elsewhere cheaper.

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 05/01/2011 16:04

scroll to the bottom of page

Apple wood smoked cheese....I wonder if it's possible?!

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 16:19

oh look, did you notice they had a Kelly kettle on that page (only they called it a ghillie kettle) and it said 'Use on its own using the Ghillie kettle base or on the Cobb to boil water while waiting for Briquettes to become ready to cook on or after cooking to make full use of any unburnt fuel.'

so I can use part burnt briquettes in the Kelly kettle? I got one last year (last year's toy) but only ever used it once because it was such a faff looking for twigs etc to burn in it and then it wouldn't light....

MisSalLaneous · 05/01/2011 16:23

sethstarkaddersmum, I'm sure you could use that.

My personal favourite is dry pine cones (I pick them up in the park), combined with half a fire lighter just to get it going. Brilliant if you want a quick cup of coffee vs playing around with it when bored while relaxing.

Batteryhuman · 05/01/2011 16:27

Baked camembert is easy Slubber, stab with garlic shards, drop of wine, maybe a smear of redcurrant jelly and wrap cheese and wooden box in foil. Leave in cobb until molten. As previously stated I use briquettes because I am tightfisted but find there is plenty of heat after cooking the main course.

If you left the top off the box and dispensed with the foil you could smoke it couldn't you, though not yet tried this?

Batteryhuman · 05/01/2011 16:29

Oh and the best stuff for starting a fire, in Kelly kettle or where ever is the fluff from a tumble drier. I save it especially Smile

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 16:30

thanks for tip re dryer fluff Battery Smile

am v much liking the idea of baked camembert while camping....

Tikkabillajive · 05/01/2011 16:57

Hi de hi campers! I am so excited to see a camping thread and I now definitely need a Cobb AND a kelly kettle!

I feel like we cracked camping last summer, having been family camping virgins the year before, but the food was a little basic, limited to our one ring burner and disposable bbqs. I'm sure a Cobb is the answer - need a bigger car first though.

Is anyone starting to plan trips for this year yet?

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 16:59

We have left it TOO LATE to book at the place we wanted!
(There's been a bit of a disaster - dh got left off the email list by the friend organising the trip and now the site is full up. DH v upset. We can still go somewhere else of course but the trip with friends is always a highlight Sad. And of course they won't get the benefit of my Cobb now!)

Tikkabillajive · 05/01/2011 17:02

Too late in January?! Sad Where is it? Could you camp nearby and waft camembert fumes at them?

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 17:05

Oooooooh now I want a kelly kettle just so I can save and burn my tumble drier fluff.

Has anyone trIed the australian heat beads? I read somewhere that you can reuse them if you put them in a bucket of water afterwards.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 17:06

it's one of the National Trust ones in the Lake District.
We can camp elsewhere in the Lakes and meet up for daytime jaunts but it's not quite the same as camping in a big group with the children running in and out of each others' tents and the grownups sitting around drinking beer after dcs are in bed.

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 17:08

Seth that is a major bummer. Can you not squeeze in somewhere if you go non EHU?

bramblebooks · 05/01/2011 17:38

I should not read this before i eat. However, I'm a bit concerned about Whether I should train a hose from my attic bedroom.

I am a big fan of the BBQ/ double burner gas stove combo. We have a gas canister stove which we take to the beach with a cool box and do burgers and fry ups followed by hot bananas.

Should I mention my sea canoe yet?

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 18:19

what is non-EHU Slubber?

we usually take a disposable barbie to the beach (plus a Trangia for teas if the weather is inclement). I hate disposable bbqs with a passion, nasty-smelling inconsiderate environmentally disgraceful sharp-edged things. Can't wait to take Cobb instead Smile

poppyboo · 05/01/2011 18:24

seth, it's non-electric hook-up I'm guessing?

OP posts:
sethstarkaddersmum · 05/01/2011 18:29

oh that makes sense - electric hook-ups aren't even on our radar, all we want is a little patch of ground near our friends!
It is really down to the campsite and whether they think they can squeeze us in, I think.

Slubberdegullion · 05/01/2011 18:35

yes, sorry, electrical hook up. We've been told no room at the inn before only to find they can magic up a bit of grass for us as we don't require a plug socket to camp.

Not having a ginormo tent will probably help your cause.

Are the NT terribly strict like the C&CC club? Surely then can squeeze you in.

Bramble, cadacs and kelly kettles may have snuck in BUT this thread is a SEA CANOE FREE ZONE.

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 05/01/2011 18:42

(bramble-I'll be excited about your sea canoe for you-dh wants one :) )

We'll be camping locally again this year as I have another under one dc-hopefully she will be as good as Ds was when he was small, but I like home to be

BlueCollie · 05/01/2011 19:06

Oh god I so shouldn't have read this thread. I so want a cobb now and so will my DH when I send him the link to one but we are so skint. Plus we already have trouble fitting stuff in....it does look fab and can you really cook a whole chicken on it? how long would that take. I can't wait to camp and much prefer to holidays abroad.

bramblebooks · 05/01/2011 19:08

We could invert the sea canoe as a canopy for cooking in extreme weather. Think of it as a cobb accessory.
