Do you judge mums who bottle feed?

babybrian · 08/04/2010 11:40

I tried to breastfeed, for one reason and another I failed. I am about to start going to baby groups and have worked myself into a bit of a neurotic state.

Tell me, honestly , do you judge mums who bottle feed? My dd is only 8 weeks and I worry people will think I don't love her.

OP posts:
PotPourri · 13/04/2010 21:23

truthfully, yes. And I include myself in that, hsving mainly fed my first 3 children that way.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:29

redredwine, do you remember his name?

RedRedWine1980 · 13/04/2010 21:30

His name was Michael Kramer I believe.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:31

thanks

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:35

I've just found a study he was involved in that states:

"These results, based on the largest randomized trial ever conducted in the area of human lactation, provide strong evidence that prolonged and exclusive breastfeeding improves children's cognitive development."

.

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:41

Ruby, FFS, no one is denying bf is best, BUT, and it is a big BUT, ff DOES NOT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT ILLNESSES. Show me links to the studies you cite. And proper studies, not tinpot crap.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:42

This is from the Independent:

"There really isn?t any controversy about which mode of feeding is more beneficial for the baby and the mother, but when you read the article in The Times it sounds like there is. I?m not aware of any studies that have observed any health benefits of formula feeding. That?s important, and any mother weighing the benefits of breastfeeding vs formula feeding needs to know that."

here

and this

"The existing evidence suggests that breastfeeding may protect against the risk of leukaemia, lymphoma, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, heart disease and blood pressure"

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:44

sorry misspoopy.

i was just looking at this from michael kramer. is this tinpot crap?

here

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:44

Again, we KNOW bf provides health benefits BUT ff does not CAUSE illnesses. You need to be clear about the difference. YOU are saying ff CAUSES serious illness. Where is your proof? You have none because it is nonsense.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:44

sorry missMoopy!!!

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:46

CAUSES increased risk. for whatever reason. the protective benefits of breastmilk are not there, or the ingredients in formula damaging babies guts etc etc

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:49

I give up. I really do. You have no evidence. I am going off to smoke crack around my child. I might as well, I ff her so I am already a terrible person.

To the OP, please do not let this scare you off ff. If you cannot bf, and some women cannot, do not feel like a terrible person for feeding your child an alternative. Many many many children are ff and grow into happy, healthy adults.

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:51

Cheap pathetic shot with the name misspelling. Grow up.

sungirltan · 13/04/2010 21:53

honestly do i judge? yeh. but not as much as judge excessive use of dummies. weaning before 6 months. crap shoes on toddlers/small children and my biggest bugbear - bloost pierced ears on babies!!

you tried to bf and its didn't work out. at least you tried.

hope no one gives you a hard time x

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:54

just because you ff your child, it doesn't mean she will suffer any adverse health problems, but some do, because of what they were fed as children. surely you are not trying to deny this?

enjoy your crack bong.

mamasparkle · 13/04/2010 21:54

Ruby - nobody is denying the benefits of BFing, but you do not seem able to provide us with a link to any real evidence that -

Formula causes cancer to child and mother

Formula damages a baby's gut

Formula causes other illnesses

I am interested to see more evidence on this, as I have close family members who were formula fed (two of whose mother is a consultant oncologist and father is a GP).

"People suffer terrible terrible illnesses because their mothers did not breastfeed."

Nobody can prove this. If a formula fed adult goes on to develop cancer or another illness, noone, not even you, can definitively say it was because they were not breastfed. There are so many other factors that come into play. You can suppose and hypothesise to suit your argument, but that is all.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:55

i so didn't mean to do that. like i said, sorry!

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:57

I will, thanks.

Enjoy being smug.

And yes, I am denying it. FOR THE LAST TIME, FF DOES NOT CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS. NOR DOES BF PREVENT IT. IT REDUCES THE RISKS. THAT IS ALL.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 21:57

its not that i am not able, i thought it was well known. i can start quoting from books by well known lactation experts if you like, and if you insist, i will find some evidence of INCREASED RISK, like I said.

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 21:58

No, I would rather you went back under your stone and stopped making the OP feel bad. She is a new mum and may be more susceptible than others to your evangelical crap.

Goodbye.

mamasparkle · 13/04/2010 22:00

If you would, Ruby.

Please also support your claim that

"People suffer terrible terrible illnesses because their mothers did not breastfeed."

Thanks.

PotPourri · 13/04/2010 22:02

Yes, bf is best. BUT a starving baby causes much more damage than ff-ing that baby. Babies used to die due to there being no viable alternative.

ilovepiccolina · 13/04/2010 22:06

OP - yes, it makes me very sad to see a little baby with a bottle. But I've learned to keep in mind that there might be sound reasons for it.

We do judge people, all the time, don't we? We look at them and judge their naff clothes, bad make-up, overweight, roots showing. (Describing myself btw ) Just add 'using a bottle instead of BF' to the list as something to judge.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/04/2010 22:07

mamasparkle if there is an increased risk of diseases or even SIDs cases in FF infants that it stands to reason that fewer of those infants would have been affected had their mothers breastfed.

missmoopy · 13/04/2010 22:12

You are making no sense and clutching at straws now, ruby.
