Have been trying to re-start my supply for 8 weeks after my dd refused to feed from 4 weeks (12 weeks now) have tried to get my supply going again...have tried everything..latching her on 6+ times a day...nothing

tried expressing 6+ times a day...nothing

tried fenugreek on top of this...nothing

last ditch attempt is to beg my doc for domperidone on tuesday (they wouldnt give it to me last time at 8 weeks)

but im thinking its time to give up!

you can buy motilium over the counter here too, but it's very expensive. about £4 for 10 tablets.

lots of info here on relactation

RubyBuckleberry · 11/12/2009 20:18

not really a recipe - more like 1 teabag of fennel tea (get from health food shop) and a tea strainer of raspberry leaf (loose leaves - must be a green colour, not raspberry flavour, raspberry leaf) and steep until quite strong. And then sometimes a nettle tea bag and a fennel teabag. Steep until quite strong. And then sometimes chamomile and fennel etc etc The only one that is loose tea is the raspberry leaf.

RubyBuckleberry · 11/12/2009 20:29

I've just had a look and it looks like it might be the nettle and the raspberry leaf that increases supply, the fennel increases the let-down reflex, hence why my milk was shooting across the room!

gorge, tiktok at the beginnign of your thread said 8-10 times a day including nights. i know that feeding at night is v important to stimulate supply, so you will have to try to emulate that.

have you got numbers for bf helplines? it would be good for you to talk to someone one-to-one.

my gp wouldn't give me domperidone either - she said incredulously "you expect me to listen to something you have got off the internet?!" and then said she didn't know anything about breastfeeding anyway.

Bumping for support, am gutted that I don't have my double pump anymore as you'd be so welcome to it! Are there any in the classifieds here? I can't believe the lack of RL support you're getting! Have you spoken to the BfN? Call 0300 100 0210 they are great!!

gorge2003 · 12/12/2009 11:51

gorge, I've got a double pump that I'm not using, I'll e-mail you.

JetLiHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 13/12/2009 22:33

Hi gorge - are you OK with the domperidone dose now? I'm guessing you'll probably need more of them than you would take for their primary use.

gorge2003 · 14/12/2009 11:01

Well I looked online and apparently I need 3 3x a day so been taking that! Defo an improvement! Few more drops now!

OP posts:
thaliablogs · 15/12/2009 13:17

gorge, given where you are I'd consider going to 120mg a day of the dom, ie 3 tablets 4 times a day. Good luck!

amystev · 15/12/2009 14:43

Gorge, let me know if you need any more domperidone as I work in a pharmacy and can get it at discount. I really hope it works for you, but just as a word of caution can I just check that you're not on any other medication? Domperidone is a pretty safe medicine, and side effects are quite rare, but there are a few medications that don't mix too well with it.

gorge2003 · 15/12/2009 16:54

hiya amy im on omeprazole for acid reflux...been on that 4 years nearly and on salbutamol inhaler and symbicort inhaler. How much could you get the domperidone for cos only got 3 and half packets left...seems more than it is lol!

update...defo an improvement...getting few more drops put every time now! think we are getting there slowly with help from domperidone and pump!

I sent it first class so it should be there tomorrow.

Don't let your hubby make too many mooing noises, put something good on the TV and relax.

Glad to hear you're starting to get a bit more

hi gorge2003, just following your thread and wanted to post to let you know how fantastic I think you are for persevering with BF.

I also wanted to give you some hope from my experience- DS refused the boob completely from 6-16weeks and now at 6 months has been feeding 1-3 times a day since 16 weeks. I pumped 2-3hourly until 18 weeks and still pump 4 times a day to try and keep up my supply (I do have to supplement with formula).

I was fortunate enough to have a lovely GP, who despite never having heard of domperidone in improving supply, looked up the BNF book (lists all medications/uses/dosages) and prescribed me a 6 week supply to see how it went. This was at 16 weeks. I started on 30mg a day and progressed to 60mg (20mg three times a day).

My health visitor happened to find a double pump to lend me for a few weeks until a hospital grade one became available from the hospital based breast feeding clinic. I realise that I am incredibly fortunate to have had these resources on my doorstep.

Is there a hospital nearby that might have a breastfeeding counsellor/access to pumps? The BF help lines are great support too.

On a practical note-it is entirely possible to double pump and MN simultaneously! I just park myself up to the dining room table, jam the pumps against the side of the table and hey presto Sorry if TMI

Good luck with the pumping. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

gorge2003 · 17/12/2009 12:48

its going really well have upped my dosage to 4 tagblets 3 times a day and thats really helping.

Havent seen my proper hv since she was 4 weeks old so pretty much been on my own.2 different docs wouldnt prescribe domperidone...first one said it doesnt work, 2nd one said she would have prescribed it if she thought it would help but didnt think it would at this stage....

if that stupid first doc had given me it the first time at 8 weeks i would probably be fine and wouldnt be going through this.

i am getting there, quite alot now but not enough to drip into collection bottle, think it will be another week or so. only prob is though at mums for xmas and she said 'u should give up its not gonna work'...doesnt know im still trying and will give me a HUGE lecture...so gonna be hard to pump! but hopefully only there for 3 days and will take my manual one and do it in secret!

that really gives me hope after you going through the same! Im hoping cos i had a good supply to begin with once its back im hoping i wont have to supplement!

im pretty proud of myself for not just giving up tbh!

Hi Gorge, so sorry I haven't been on here for a couple of days. No worries with the meds you are on and domperidone, so that's good news. I'll send you an email about how many I can get for you (I'll have get one of my mates to 'accidentally' order a few too many as I'm on maternity leave at the mo so I can buy the extras!)

So glad it's working for you!!
