My DD is 8 1/2 months old and we both love breastfeeding. I plan to carry on for the foreseeable future and wondered how other mums got on with the "Are you STILL breastfeeding??" comments.

Very interesting sleepyjess. Just shows what the right support can achieve eh? I have a friend here in Turkey who has a son with CP. She breastfed him until he was 4 and told me fiercely 'I would have carried on until he was 1o if that was what he wanted.'
Her relitives were horrified.

I can identify with your relative Moondog.. I wouldn't have done it until he was ten.. but I did not give two hoots about what people thought about me bf such a large child. By the time he was that age, it was almost all at night anyway.. but he was a very chesty child until about 3 so if he was under the weather, he needed a lot to drink.. so I fed him in the day as well then, pretty much anywhere. He is became very high maintenance though by the time he was 2 (and remains so, although he is totally gorgeous! ) and I just couldn't take the pace of feeding all night and caring for him in the day.. so DH and I weaned him off together. We were also worried about his inability to suck from anything buy my boobs! It was a struggle but we did it in the end.. mastitis ahoy!

Just seen this thread.

DS1 - stopped on his 3rd birthday
DS2 - 18 months and showing no sign of giving up

Have to admit I love breastfeeding. Had a horrendous time initially with ds1 (cracked nipple) and nearly gave up but determined to carry on. DS1 was only having bedtime feed for the last 6 months or so.

bobbybob · 26/05/2005 10:12

mumbo - did he give up because it was his birthday, a kind of "I'm a big boy now" sort of thing?

huggybear · 26/05/2005 10:14

ds1 - 14 months
ds2 - 4 months

6 1/2 mths....those teeth were sooo sharp and I was going back to work for 2 days per week...
I loved it and really didn't want to stop!
How do you all manage the teeth issue???

ninja · 26/05/2005 10:19

21.5 months - and only stopped 'cos she was soooo clingy and would have fed all day and all night!! I was gutted stopping as I really wanted to get to 2 years, but then I guess I would have been gutted stopping then as well (i have to say I'm quite proud though as I got through 3 months of terrible thrush and was so close to quitting at about 9 months).

bundle · 26/05/2005 10:20

dd1 23mths
dd2 STILL bf (25 mths) most mornings and evenings, with odd splurge when cranky/sick

ghosty · 26/05/2005 10:23

DS ... 6 weeks
DD ... just under 10 months ...

mumbojumbo · 27/05/2005 08:26

Hi Bobbybob, just seen your reply. I'd been planning to stop for some time and it was only really a comfort feed but I guess yes, it seemed like another milestone - you're a big boy now and we're not having booby any more, but we can have big cuddles instead. He accepted it without a fuss and said "I don't have booby cos I'm a big boy, (ds2) xxxx has it cos he's a baby!" Easy!
