My DD is 8 1/2 months old and we both love breastfeeding. I plan to carry on for the foreseeable future and wondered how other mums got on with the "Are you STILL breastfeeding??" comments.

OP posts:

Exclusively for 5 and a half (that half is so important )

DD self-weaned at 9 months since she was then down to two breastfeeds per day.

beatie · 25/05/2005 19:12

I was sad that my dd weaned at 9 months. I didn't have a stopping time in mind. I plan to feed baby #2 for a year at least.

piffle · 25/05/2005 19:16

ds and dd both 16 mths
both times their choice
I'd have been happ/y/ier to carry on for longer to be honest

vickiyumyum · 25/05/2005 19:17

a year with ds1 managed to get him completley off the breats at about 14 months, but with ds2 stopped at 9 months when i went back to work!

Gillian76 · 25/05/2005 19:20

DD1 - 14 months (exclusively for 5)

DD2 - 16 months (exclusively for 10)

DS - 6 months exclusively

DDs each stopped of their own accord whilst I was pregnant. I stopped bf DS because of recurring thrush. We were tormented for about 2 months and I couldn't take any more WIsh I'd given him longer...

lunarx · 25/05/2005 19:23

i breastfeed ds for 4 months exclusive... 5 months mixed feeding..

chipmonkey · 25/05/2005 19:34

ds1 11mths
ds2 13mths
ds3 is 5months and on the boob this very minute!

The only 'are you still breastfeeding?' comment I've ever had was from a friend who doesn't have children, at a wedding reception when we were all sitting around with a nice glass or three of champagne, and I realised DD2 could probably do with her evening feed....

....and my mate said 'Are you still breastfeeding? How marvellous!'

throckenholt · 25/05/2005 19:52

12 months 2 weeks with ds1 - until I found out I was pregnant with twins

9 months expressing for twins (ugh)

moondog · 25/05/2005 19:54

dd-2 1/2 years
ds-11 months so far (but by his choice,he's down to only 1 feed a day since he was 8 1/2 months. No formula though. Just water and lots of yoghurt and cheese.)

moondog · 25/05/2005 19:54

Hats off to you women expressing for months. Must have been bloody exhausting....

sweetkitty · 25/05/2005 19:55

dd 17 months

hotmama · 25/05/2005 20:02

10 weeks as it all went pearshaped - and I so wanted to make it to 6 months. I am going to do everything in my power to bf longer with the next one .... which (hopefully) will be Jan 2006 as I had a positive pregnancy test TODAY!

Will sort out how to access bf counselling as didn't know about it until too late.

You lot are an inspiration!

moondog · 25/05/2005 20:04

Congatulations hotmama! Wonder why it went wrong at that relatively late stage? You would have thought things were settled by then?

jenkel · 25/05/2005 20:10

dd1 - 11 months (until I found out I was pregnant)
dd2 - 12 months

hotmama · 25/05/2005 20:14

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but any advice from you lot would be sooo gratefully received - though think I should start up a new thread.

Basically, what went wrong was that dd was a very sleepy baby and just wasn't bothered about feeding. Also, I used nipple shields as my nipples were flat, a midwife at the hospital said that she used them for 6 months so I wasn't to feel bad - it can be done! It's only now I realise that the use effects milk supply and that I should had fed dd more frequently and then dd started losing weight so I was 'pressured' into formula feeding - still feel sad about this but gonna get it sorted for the next one!

KateandtheGirls · 25/05/2005 20:14

#1 was unable to suck. Expressed for 3 weeks until sidelined with mastitis and 104 fever.
#2: 17 months.

moondog · 25/05/2005 20:16

Yes,hotmama, start a thread or check archives.
This seems to be a really common scenario.
Good luck for next time! You will get some great support here.

ponygirl · 25/05/2005 20:19

Ds1 - 51 weeks! (It was Christmas)
Dd - 11.5 months (It was Christmas!)
Ds2 - 15.5 months (Hanging on for both of us...)

Willow2 · 25/05/2005 20:37

13 months

morningpaper · 25/05/2005 20:39

19 months - didn't feed her in public after about a year though.

JakB · 25/05/2005 20:40

DD- 2 weeks (didn't work for various reasons)
DS- 8 and a half months (gave up at 6 months and got really emotional about it so started up again)

bobbybob · 25/05/2005 20:45

2 years 3 months and still going. It's very different to feeding a 8 month old baby, and any sleep missed when he was little is now being given back to me because he doesn't get sick.
