Breastfeeding - every mother's right.

OP posts:
fishie · 29/03/2008 22:07

yes sorry didn't make myself clear there. phatmouse i think by not providing effective support for breastfeeding the gvt/society/whoever else we fancy blaming are guilty of failing at best and sabotage at worst.

i am really shocked about the tokens, it is in effect subsidising formula. presumably it is to stop people giving 'alternatives'?

Divastrop · 29/03/2008 22:09

bb99-i totally agree with your last post.i did feel like a failure when i stopped bf ds1,as i had been told breast was 'best' at ante-natal.

yes, I've been thinking about the failed word too, it never applies! It seems women either choose to bf, choose not to bf or try to bf and ff after a struggle. The only way IMO you can fail to bf is if you don't actually feed your baby at all.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 22:12

I was going to start a thread about it but asssumed I'd be jumped on and have my head bitten off. Guess what - I was right!

Breastfeeding - exploding the myths
would be a good opener, as long as it went on to do that

orangehead · 29/03/2008 22:18

flight I used to get the tokens about two years ago but they were called 'healthy living tokens' which you could buy formula milk, any other milk or fruit and veg so that bf mums could benefit too. Also you dont have to use all the value, you can just buy for example 2 pints ok its abit of a waste but its better than not using them at all.

phatmouse no one is critizing women for not bf for what ever reason. Just about educating which surprising some people know very little. If you dont want to see such threads choice to have them hidden

bb99 · 29/03/2008 22:21

StealthPolarBear - agree about the failure thing, no-one does.

BF - exploding the myths

Starlight - personally I like the idea of your slogan, if we (women) can be magnanimous enough to step back from any uncomfortable feelings we may have about how we chose / got to feed our own babies with the information and resources and bodies we had at the time IYSWIM.

OP posts:
berolina · 29/03/2008 22:23

My first thought was 'Breastfeeding: more than milk', but that again implies the idea of bf being over and above the 'normal' which we want to get away from. Then 'Breastfeeding. What they were born to do' - but that has the potential to be upsetting to women who can't/couldn't bf. And I've come to the conclusion that you can't/shouldn't sloganise bf.

bb99 · 29/03/2008 22:25

Divastrop - my SIL was devestated when she swapped to ff, specially as FIL (her dad) kept on spouting about breast is best, I think it's horrid and no-one should be made to feel that way. We all do our best and no-one fails! Am thinking it's a very stupid catch phrase, hence needs changing / replacing / dropping.

Princess to give you a bit of hope I had a horrendous time bf ds1 and gave up after 1 week but carried on expressing then tried again a week later, to my surprise he latched back on but I never really got my milk production back up so ended up mix feeding. But I really hated the bf for several reasons. When I got preg with ds2 I dreaded going through it all again but ds2 bf like a dream with no prob and he bf till 13 months old and we only really gave it up then because I had to go on mediation. Hope 2nd time will be a success for you too

orangehead · 29/03/2008 22:36

The tokens are not promoting ff. Bf women are recommend to drink a pint of milk a day to help their milk supply. So thats 7 pints sorted. I used to buy 7 pints and keep it in the frigde and buy the 7th day it was still perfectly fine

Human milk, perfect for human babies ?

Breast milk: Nutritionally perfect for your baby ?

There's no such thing as a free lunch..unless you are a breastfed baby ?

And before I get flamed, it is not fair that there are so many advertising messages for formula and yet all us BFers get is "breast is best". I want a nice little advert too!!

MamaMaiasaura · 29/03/2008 23:04

This is not just any milk...... It is mummy milk

morocco · 29/03/2008 23:04

i like 'formula: know the risks' as one slogan, you wouldn't want to use it all the time but it might make people stop and read it, rather than 'breastfeeding blah blah blah blah' which I'm sure is what a lot of people really read when they see some of those posters
artificial feeding is such a very weird phrase, imagine a team of robots holding bottles

Washersaurus · 29/03/2008 23:06

I think there should be a variety of slogans to target a broader audience, rather than just one slogan like 'breast is best'.

I'm not clever enough to think of any good ones though

tiktok · 29/03/2008 23:24

Phatmouse - why do you think eating vegetables improves the quality of your milk?

The very fact you come up with that idea is proof that information on breastfeeding is sadly lacking

berolina · 29/03/2008 23:28

The whole bf and diet thing worries me too, as it can suggest, or seem to suggest to some women, that you need an [expensive] 'optimal' diet in order to bf successfully - making bf seem out of reach, something for the well-off, or unduly difficult/complicated.

Search my name and the term 'bf juice' in the MN archives to read about a very alarming experience in this context that I had when I was in hospital with ds2.

Don't throw milk tokens/vouchers away . Healthy Start vouchers replaced the old milk token scheme about 2 yrs ago. You can exchange them for fruit and veg, formula or cows milk. Contact Healthy Start via the website to let them know if your local shops aren't yet involved in the scheme.

DS3 used to have a t-shirt saying 'Mummy's milk is yummy milk' which i loved (cant remember where I put it, would ahve loved for ds4)

Sabire · 30/03/2008 09:11

I saw a lovely poster once - a semi-naked hunky man holding a baby (Athena stylee) with the slogan 'mummy's milk for daddy's baby'. It was the perfect antidote the the sickmaking SMA campaign!
