Breastfeeding - every mother's right.

OP posts:

I failed to bf first time, not sure what happened - a variety of issues contributed to it not working out.

When I eventually get round to having number two I hope that I will be able to bf. Yesterday I was reading a book in Waterstones about bfing and I said to dh that everything I know about bfing I have learnt from MN. Although it is great that there is so much support & knowledge here isn't it a bit pathetic that the information about the REAL facts just isn't really out there? The midwives on my post natal ward were totally clueless (I didn't realise this at the time) which is inexcusable really.

Sorry to digress I just find it strange and sad that I (speaking as a failed breastfeeder) know more about breastfeeding than the majority of professionals that I have encountered.

bb99 · 29/03/2008 21:33

Diva - very cheeky!

Firstly, since when has mumsnet blocked swearwords. That's the joy of the site.
Secondly, the different threads on the go at the moment have not been started at the same time, by the same poster, or with the same original post. The fact that there are several threads relating to the woefully inadequate breastfeeding advice and support offered to mothers who want to breastfeed suggests that it is an issue that concerns many, breastfeeding mothers and formula feeding mothers alike.

Divastrop · 29/03/2008 21:34

flight-you can use the new tokens to buy fruit and veg as well, for your child if he/she is older or for yourself if you are bf.also, where i live most shops keep the tokens in a book for you and you can get a pint or 2 of milk a day and they just cross it off in the book.

Flight · 29/03/2008 21:36

Really? You have shops that take them?

Round here you can use them at supermarkets, not small shops or the market or anywhere cheap, basically.

It's ridiculous.
Thanks for trying to help tho

Phatmouse · 29/03/2008 21:37

I agree thing should change, all I am saying is having multiple threads on the same topic time and time again which all result in breastfeeding mothers saying the same things while bottlefeeding mothers explain themselves out of a sense of guilty is not going to change a thing, neither will it educate people without access to the internet.

There is no one who does not know in this day and age that mcdonalds make you fat if you eat enough of it, ciggies can cause cancer and yes BREAST IS BEST. Yet still they bottle feed and yet still these arguments go on.

bb99 - wasn't personal

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:37

Flight - you can freeze milk!
ALthough I suppose you'll then have a freezer full of the stuff and never get round to using it

Slogans - erm - I always liked Human milk for human babies

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:38

And I have HAD ENOUGH of people being arsey ignorant and rude

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:38

That's not a slogan suggestion, I don't think anyone would see a link to breastfeeding!

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:39

Isn't the current slogan "the start of something beautiful"?

Divastrop · 29/03/2008 21:42

pmsl@ swear words being blocked on MN.

all my posts would look like this;
you. * ok?

re:milk tokens.you get 8 tokens a month untill your baby is one year, each token has a value of £2.80 and you can either put 2 tokens towards a box of formula, and pay the extra,or you can exchange them or use them in part payment for fresh milk and/or fresh fruit and veg.

Divastrop · 29/03/2008 21:44

flight-all the shops take them where i live, but it is an area of high unemployment.

fingerwoman · 29/03/2008 21:44

so what you're saying phatmouse is that no-one should discuss anything they are interested in because it'll never ever change so why bother?

what an outlook

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:46

Divastrop, how did you stop your stars going bold?
(and go and wash your mouth out with soap and water)

fishie · 29/03/2008 21:46

so when people say breastfeeding will save you spending all your money on formula they are wrong. and formula is being promoted by the tokens surely? how fucked up.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:50

fishie, what do you mean? Not everyone gets the tokens - for people who don't, bf is free and ff isn't. From what Divastrop says you would still have to pay quite a bit for formula even with the tokens.

fishie - the tokens are for breastfeeding mums also, they can be used in asda, tesco and other supermarkets to buy veg and improve the quality of you milk, or on formula is you can't or choose to bottlefeed, no where in the UK promotes ff, especially not the government.

pukka · 29/03/2008 21:53

i'm sure ive seen the slogan about breast milk being every baby's birthright somewhere, though it may not have been in english.
flihgt, why cant youget through 8 pints of milk in three days? cereal, hot chocolate, tea coffees, easily get through that much. more if they manage to elave the milk out and it goes off.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:55

I agree - my DH uses about 2 pints on a bowl of cereal
Seriously, almost 3 pints a day is a lot. Bleurgh

Nbg · 29/03/2008 21:56

Phatmouse, I think I understand what your saying

but

Every so often a new mum or a mum who is having a problem with feeding (whichever way), stumbles across a feeding thread and has access to valuable information from feeding advisors, midwives and other mums with past experiences.
This information can help someone immensely and really this is what Mumsnet is all about.

Not only that but breast feeding is an important issue to alot of mothers and just as you may think bottle feeding is met with some form of predjudice, so is breast feeding.

Lulumama · 29/03/2008 21:56

phatmouse, for as long as women struggle with BF, or need advice, thre will be threads like this... i don;t see why you should have an issue with peer support, which in essence, is what MN is ....

bb99 · 29/03/2008 22:04

Phatmouse -

Maybe a lot of threads looking at the same thing - I'm just stunned at how little I knew and don't understand why, specially when it could (potentially, if the overall rates increased - don't be offended this isn't a ff spawn of the devil thing IYSWIM) benefit the health of the nation. Don't consider myself utterly stupid, so how could I not know so much stuff about my body and something as fundamental as how to feed a child using ff or bf (ff confuses the hell out of me!).

The breast is best thing does just seem to get in the way, also if you don't bf for what ever reason, does it get stuck up your nose? It would mine, it would really piss me off annoy me, almost like saying - you're not the best, nah, nah nah nah IYSWIM. How annoying - not many mum's don't do their BEST for their children with the information, bodies, resources and children they've got! Parenting is competitive enough as it stands. It's IMHO inflammatory to look at feeding in this way as this is BEST, that isn't, maybe that's why we get such passionate reactions in the discussion(sssssssss).

Also the word 'failed' comes into the BEST debate IMO (yuck - horrid word with horrid connotations for all, and the addition of pressure - have you PASSED you bf exam today?) Is there another way to describe switching to ff or bf, a better way to give out information to women? A better (or no) slogan? Blah, Blah..

OP posts:
Divastrop · 29/03/2008 22:06

i use about half a int of milk in one coffee

the formula i used was £7 a box(all the formula has gone up by at least £1 since the new tokens were introduced),so i had to pay £1.40 towards it(took me ages to work that out).its better than the old system where you had to tell the dss if you wanted formula or fresh milk tokens, then exchanged the token for formula at a specified clinic(which also sold formula at a reduced price for any families on the old family credit).

stealth-i dont * know why my stars arent bold
