Breastfeeding - every mother's right.

No udder milk!

MHC I know what you mean about the slogans, but I think that while we all think that we aren't affected by slogans, the idea is that they slowly permeate the subconscious.

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 10:48

I know it's been said before but I think in order for breastfeeding to be seen as the norm it needs to be out in the open, I hardly ever see people breastfeeding in public in RL or on tv programs/soaps etc. I think in my whole life i've probably seen 3 women breasfeeding in public. I know people do do it but it just seems to me that the english attitude is to hide it as best you can as some people just 'don't want to see it', attitudes need to change. You see people ffing everywhere, on tv, in cafes etc. Even the feeding/changing room at tesco's has a symbol of a bottle on the door, surely it should have a symbol that looks like a bfing mother too?
I've mix fed myself, reluctantly, due to problems but the occasions I bf in public I did feel a bit worried about any comments I might get or 'looks', It didn't happen but it shouldn't even be something that crosses your mind when you're trying to feed your baby, maybe thats my problem but I have heard about people having comments made at them as if they were doing something rude/wrong in public. It is law in scotland, I believe that you aren't allowed to stop a woman bfing anywhere, here in england the same law doesn't apply, why is this? I'm not sure what the law is here but I think it's only certain places you can't stop a woman bfing, this needs to change for a start, why would you need to stop a woman bfing ANYWHERE? There is a tv ad campaign in Australia that has been mentioned on mn before that promotes bfing in public, there was a link to one of the ads on youtube, very good, I think there should be something like that over here. Anyway, I'm just babbling now but I think you get what I mean.

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 10:53

Oh, here's the ad.

Good ad Dalrymps

They tried the page 3 type girl to target men & breastfeeding in my area - can't for the life of me remember the slogan (might still have it, off for a look!) and it was withdrawn as it had so many complaints. It was used as a poster on the side of bus stops in Aberdeenshire too I believe, and again had numerous complaints. It would seem that we're happy enough with half naked women or the mention of boobs on the front of magazines but not in relation to feeding children. There was also a leaflet targetted at getting grandparents support but it went down like a lead balloon. Pictures of little old grey haired grannies and words like "things were different in your day". My mum was fairly old becoming a gran at 57 but was still offended lol.

I HATE "breast is best". I would love to see some campaign to out some of the myths of breastfeeding. As well as something to put forward some of the risks or downsides to formula feeding - though there ARE women who can no bf at all and perhaps that could be tricky as the slogan would have to be sensitive to that.

I do like "mummy's milk is yummy milk". Nice, fluffy, cute, non offensive. Maybe too fluffy though.

rather than breastfeeding in public being "every mother's right" I would have "every baby's right".

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 11:12

fast food is good...
breastmilk, always a happy meal
Dh thought of this one, what do you think?

I agree motherhurdicure. My friend often says "statistics can say anything" or "statistics are rubbish".

I think it would be great to separate fact from fiction when it comes to breast or formula feeding.

The problem with exploding the myths is that people will still glance and see the myth.
So "I can't breastfeed because I don't eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day" with a great big MYTH stamped over it in red would still get across the underlying myth.
It would ahve to be very carefully done

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 12:25

I take it the slogan wasn't very good

suzi2 · 30/03/2008 12:29

I thought it was good but might alienate those who aren't into McDonalds for their children etc (not me lol)

StealthPolarBear · 30/03/2008 12:31

What about something simple like

Breast milk - for your children

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 12:32

No! I'm definately not in to mcdonalds for my lo either but just thought everyone has heard of a happy meal, see what you mean though. We were just messing aroung with words but couldn't really think of a way to write it. I really wanted a slogan that said breastfeeding is like healthy fast food where as formula feeding is like unhealthy fast food, exept it's not even that fast iyswim? Oh i'm not making much sense...

Dalrymps · 30/03/2008 12:35

How about something to do with, would you like real milk or powdered milk in your tea?
What kind of milk do you think your baby would choose? Thats not the actual slogan, just thinking out loud.

Aitch · 30/03/2008 12:53

i think the campaign should be 'bfing, try it, you might like it,' then a list of advantages. although i suppose the huge majority of women do try it and don't get the support to continue, so again it comes down to govt cash.

Aitch · 30/03/2008 13:00

flight, tw, have you tried buying that cravendale milk? it's 'filtered for more purity' (whatever that means... ) but is guaranteed to stay fresh for 7 days. evidently it's not treated, just that the bacteria that turns milk is removed. who knows? we buy it sometimes, it tastes fine to me.

My Mummy's milk stops me from being poorly,
so I grow up to be very healthy.

Pure filtered milk, straight from mum is gentle and kind to my tum.

Picture of a lovely healthy baby breastfeeding....... "I can eat as much as I like and still not get fat."

Sabire · 30/03/2008 17:19

Has anyone seen JLo's baby pictures in Hello?

Picture of her bottlefeeding her twins.

The article says that she chose to bottlefeed "because that's how I was fed and it was fine for me. You do the reading and you choose what's best for your babies."

(or something very close).

So - what do you reckon JLO has read that's convinced her that formula is better for her babies than her own milk?

How telling that a multi millionaire mother who's had the best obstetric care money can buy still hasn't had access to evidence based information on baby feeding.

And (sorry - this is a really ungenerous comment but I can't, can't keep it in) it's tragic that both babies look like their dad. Who looks like Herman Munster!

Divastrop · 30/03/2008 18:10

sabire-i imagine she read something about bf making your boobs saggy.i suppose in a round about way it is whats best for her babies,im sure she believes that saggy boobs would mean no work, and she doesnt want to be raising her babies as trailer trash.

missboohoo · 30/03/2008 18:28

That's quite a good slogan.

BabiesEverywhere · 30/03/2008 18:35

Why pay for artifical when you can make natural for free ?
