see Xmas tips link Yeah, if you're boozing for england but oculd it perhaps be a slight advert for Avent products here rather than fully correct BF advice? i think one or two drinks is usually OK, especially if you have them straight after feeding as we've said many times on this list...

I know MN has gotta have an income from somewhere but adverts disguised as advice aren't helping anyone. or is it just me?

OP posts:
AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:13

I've just said similar on the other thread Aitch (the positive changes wrt way bf spoken about on MN thread).

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:14

Oh I agree Aitch.
Just didn't put it as elequently as you.

I would still love to see the job description for being a 'wellbeing advisor' though.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 10/12/2007 22:22

oh me too! do you think any of us would get the job?

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:23

Well I might get its polar opposite as have beeen accused often enough of peddling doom and gloom.

A shitbeing advisor.

i like it!

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:24

eloquently

kiskidee · 10/12/2007 22:24

"It may interest you to know that I have infact been approached to write for a formula company recently (for which i would have been paid) but turned this down."

is this the quote from VS that you were looking for Aitch? it is on 'that' thread at 14.30

kiskidee · 10/12/2007 22:25

doesn't the bit in brackets imply taht she is working for free for Avent?

AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:25

"infact"

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:26

That idiot doctor on Jeremy Vine does some spiel for Cow & Gate on their website.
Yes,the very smae woman who questioned the motives of women who breastfeed beyond 12 months.

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:27

That's what I mean.Yes,she does suggest she is working for nowt.

AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:29

Now, that sort of suspicion (the "it's for the mothers, not the children) demonstrates a total lack of knowledge about how breastfeeding works (ooh, catchy - how breastfeeding works - I'll use that, maybe on a blog somewhere ).

Because if you have, say, an 18mo, they're feisty and they have teeth. Anyone who tries to force a child of that age to bf deserves everything they get, really!

moondog · 10/12/2007 22:32

Well she is an appalling patronising waste of space anyway.
She holds forth every week.
One Tuesday it's ingrown toenails.
The next it's pancreatic cancer.
The next it's schizophrenia.

I had no idea that the common or garden GP possessed such breadth of knowledge.

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 10/12/2007 22:33

funnily enough hunker....

AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:35

LOL VVV

NineBabiesDancing · 10/12/2007 22:38

Did Vicki ever answer the question about her breastfeeding qualifications ?

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 10/12/2007 22:40

I think this is the answer

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 10/12/2007 22:42

oh yes, howbreastfeedingworks is vaairy catchy. i wonder who came up with that?

oh are you reading that as 'i would have been paid' and therefore she's not being paid. hmmm. see i thought it was just a freelance thing, no-one wanting to turn down work and all that.

if she's working for free then why not say? (because i don't think she is, that's why). nor do i think she should be, i like to see people rewarded for their expertise. for their expertise ise ise...

AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:45

LOL Aitch - I got sidetracked by something else, but I was just on my way back to this thread to mention your genius

I initially read that as "and I'm working for free for Avent" then after a split second I went - re-he-eeally?!

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 10/12/2007 22:49

and the viewing public says...

AwayInAMunker · 10/12/2007 22:53

PMSL VVV! That one needs to be saved and used again and again

OliviaMumsnet · 11/12/2007 12:21

Hi NineBabiesDancing, here's Vicki's reply to queries about her qualifications.
HTH

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 11/12/2007 13:22

Olivia - are you glossing over me? (still no PJ's btw).

I have read that response, and would still like further clarification please.

" my most intense period of learning and gaining practical experience was during my years as a maternity nurse, and in the last five years of working as a consultant to mums."

I'd like clarification on "Maternity Nurse". Is that the same kind of maternity nurse that Claire Verity et al was, or, one with formal qualifications (other than MW)?

A "consultant to mums" is what, exactly? A nanny? A doula?

Vicki Scott says she is independent from Avent. This says that she isnt on the payroll, it's true, but, she is still being paid for her services with Avent as her client, is she not?

Please can you have my questions answered? I just want things to be transparent before I'll pay any heed to what this 'expert' says.

NineBabiesDancing · 11/12/2007 14:03

Olivia, Thank you that helps and explains a lot.

It sounds like Vicky is a HCP (and a mum to a gorgeous baby girl), who has attended a few breastfeeding related courses/workshops.

I understand that the Unicef one is a 3 day course and aren't the longest courses offered by the LCGB a 6 day workshop ?

Bottom line she isn't a trained breastfeeding counselor (like TikTok) and she doesn't follow/read all the latest research (like Hunker).

Her advice is properly the same level of well meaning information we can all get from our own HCP.

Thanks for that, I'll stick to the breastfeeding advice given on the boards from the posters who are clear about their qualifications (or lack of them) and give great advice, backed up by the latest studies.

I wish Vicky all the best in her new 'partnership' with Philip Avent, I hope it is very beneficial for her.

tiktok · 11/12/2007 14:29

NCT runs courses or healthcare professionals, which are half a day or a day in length.

NineBabies, I'd be surprised if the LCGB (Lactation Consultants of Great Britain) did 6-day courses....as far as I know they don't do any training, though they do have a practically-oriented conference once a year, and there are day-long courses run by an LC independently to help people pass the IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) exam. But LCGB is a membership organisation, not a standard-setting body. However, just 'cos I don't know about the 6 day course doesn't mean it doesn't exist

Vicki Scott is probably a perfectly nice and reasonably well-informed lady trying to earn an honest living. It takes a long time for anyone to know what they don't know (IYSWIM) about breastfeeding, and to understand you cannot simply make it up (like the pumping and dumping stuff about alcohol). Her opinions about baby care are just that - opinions (for example, 'start as you mean to go on' with regard to feeding and sleeping) and worth no more than anyone else posting on the boards themselves.

tiktok · 11/12/2007 14:29

courses or = courses for
