Text (page 61):

Are you breast-feeding, Katie?

No, it's brilliant I have 20 crates of teats and bottles -- I don't have to sterilise or heat anything, you literally take the teat out of the pack, screw it on, throw it away. I don't care what people say - you don't have to breast-feed. They gave me a tablet that dries your milk up so my boobs haven't hurt or leaked or anything.

Peter: Junior didn't breast-feed and he's turned out fine.

So why did you decide not do breast-feed?

I don't want a baby drinking from me - the thought of it makes me feel really funny. I think only a certain person could handle my knockers.

But lots of people ARE influenced by celeb endorsements and this one is pretty heavy handed....

divastrop · 05/08/2007 21:55

when i first started ff ds1 i used SMA because it was the only baby milk i'd heard of.

why is that,i wonder?

sweetcherrypie · 05/08/2007 21:56

I know they are, i am saying I don't buy into it. I know people buy products because a celeb is advertising it but the sad thing is i find, that celeb is only advertising it because they are being paid a big sum of money, not because they actually care about the product.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 05/08/2007 21:58

but of course they are!!!!!!! it's all about money!!! cherrypie-i don't see why you are arguing about this??

sweetcherrypie · 05/08/2007 22:00

Neither do i! I personally hate celebs advertising, i look at the product and see if it's anygood, not the face on the cover advertising it.

ScottishMummy · 05/08/2007 22:02

of course celeb endorsements work - i know because i definitely bought the l'oreal mascara that penelope de la cruz advertised on basis of the ad material and the promo photos - and they were fake false eyelashes - more fool me huh ..so i do think inadvertently jordan is negatively endorsing SMA, i do not know whether this was her intention only she knows

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 05/08/2007 22:03

no inadvertant abput it. jordan might appear to be thick as two short planks but she is a canny business woman!

ScottishMummy · 05/08/2007 22:10

it will bw interesting to see how jordan handles this debacle...i think she is canny

a number of possibilities

  • sack the PR people
  • claim unwitting manipulation by OK
  • the you-cam-all-feck-off approach -blame the hormones -range of tv appearances bleating on about being misrepresented by magazine
lissie · 05/08/2007 22:15

im placing bets on a few more articles where she discusses both her pnd and mc in more detail while pointing out that her sex life is now better than ever.

Difers · 06/08/2007 11:06

Have got standard reply e-mail from the advertising standards authority saying that the complaint is lodged.

Keep complaining girls, the more complaints they have the more they have to clamp out on this!

......but I see the editor of OK magazine hasn't bothered to reply - no surprise there then!

Pannacotta · 06/08/2007 11:42

Same for me Difers (reply from ASA but not OK), lets hope the complaints make a difference...

Flibbertyjibbet · 06/08/2007 12:03

Dp complained to the ASA earlier this year about something, we got the standard acknowldgement of complaint type email, but a couple of days later we got a full email explaining what they looked into and what the outcome was.
No doubt they are wading through such a pile of complaints that we will have to wait a bit longer than usual for our detailed response. Also, because there are 3 parties (mag, slapper and SMA) involved, and no actual advertisement, just product placement, it might take longer for them to get to the bottom of it.
I will post when I hear from the head lady at our local bf support organisation to see how she got on making an official complaint. She has some quite high up contacts in the NHS, and was also on Philip and Fern 18 months ago discussing breastfeeding so hopefully she can rattle some important cages on this issue.

Difers · 06/08/2007 17:08

But isn't product placement advertising??? It always is when they mention cars and james Bond flims?

LIZS · 06/08/2007 17:17

Companies pay vast amounts for product placement - Pepsi and Nike in Back to the Future, Mattel in Toy Story for example - presumably in the case of films it goes towards the budget but for such an article .

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2007 22:02

When I looked at the mag I just thought 'oh what a lovely baby' and 'dont they look happy'.I never even noticed she was feeding formula. And to be honest I really dont care.Think there are far far worse things in the media to complain about

rainbow83 · 06/08/2007 22:11

you never noticed the formula?

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2007 22:15

no

I was too busy looking at cute baby, but then I dont have an issue with formula feeding though I see thats not the whole point. I can see now that it was dodgy advertising but I guess it happens so much that I am immune to it?

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2007 22:16

Certainly though it does not anger me in the way it has angered many posters here.

harpsichordcarrier · 06/08/2007 22:17

I'm sorry but
stupid
fucking
bitch

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2007 22:25

who me or jordan ?

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2007 22:30

I'll get my coat then......

harpsichordcarrier · 06/08/2007 22:49

er, Jordan.

missbumpy · 07/08/2007 11:32

Did anyone hear piece on Today programme on Radio 4 this morning about product placement/advertising of infant formula?
There's a link to listen to it on the right hand side of the home page...
www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/

They didn't specifically mention the Jordan article in OK but I couldn't help but wonder if that's what had sparked the whole debate off.

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/08/2007 11:41

No we have radio 2 on here, will check out that link. However I woke up to Radio 2 news saying that some baby milk manufacturers have been exploiting a loop hole in the ban on advertising infant formula. So it looks like the backlash from the slapper/ok/sma article is everywhere - result mumsnetters!!

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/08/2007 11:43

just read yr post again - I also noticed on Radio 2 they do not mention Jordan or the name of the milk, obviously avoiding giving her or the manufacturer any more publicity, otherwise she'll be all over the mags next week being paid to weep about how she has been moaned about by wierd bf mums...
And have you seen this weeks reveal 'Jordans Baby Body Battle'. Yawn.
