is my hv talking nonsense? my baby is 23 days old and shes telling me to top up

hi girls
my little baby is now 23 days old
i do find bf harder at night than in the morning [does sem to be less milk than in the mornings]
she is ex bf on demand
baby was born weighing 8 4 and a half
13 days later her weight went down to 7 11
hv said dd had to gain at least 4-5 oz in the next wk or we would have to rethink bf
and that maybe i should give her a formula top up
everything ive ive read says babys can and do lose weight in the 1st week or two
and one of the worse things to do to wreck bf is to give top ups of formula
so i decided to keep going only bf
then on tue one week after she was weighed again and had put on 6 and a half oz
weighing in at 8 1 and a half
so i thought yes shes put on more than 4-5oz
its working
but my hv still said that i should think about giving a top of formula
but will this make it harder for my baby to switch between the two?
or that if i dont want to give formula to express
what do you guys think should i be giving her tops ups ?

hunker, the worst thing this hv has said to me when dd was only 4 weeks old was to only feed her every 2 to 2 and a half hours and to put her upstairs in her moses basket and put some ear plugs in and leave her, imagine doing that to a 4 week old newborn it would of definatley stressed her out would hate to think of the damaging effects of all that cortisol and certainly would of scuppered the bf for sure. of all the bad advice shes given to me this is the advice that makes me really really mad

ive already made a complaint about the way i was treated at the hospital which is still being investigated,so im weary of being cast as just a trouble maker but some of the things she comes out with are just outrageous so i think i will .

thanks for the link to the blw ive already looked at that,can you imagine what she would say to that,considering she refers to breastfeeders as looney left wing hippies !!

shes said theres a window and if you miss it youll have loads of problems. this seems on par with her advice about if i give formula my own milk will thicken.

everyone at this surgery has there babies on formula no doubt largely due to her influence as she tells everyone to put them on it for no reason other than most babies are on formula by now [2 or 3 weeks]

I have just read this thread from start to finish and wanted to say a huge WELL DONE to you Kittenbaby and thank goodness for all the voices of reason on here esp Tiktok, Hunker, Harpsi, Moondog etc. What a fantastic success thanks to everyone involved, and esp you Kittenbaby for sticking to your guns in the face of such stupid opposition (ie your HV , and your Mum ).

hi everyone, just wanted to wish you all a very happy christmas and new year

and to let you know dd is 6 months next month and doing great,she is super smiley and laughs loads. i had her weighed for the 1st time in 5 weeks this week [mainly to see if shes big enough for her next grobag] and she now weighs 16lb 5 oz and has almost gone right back upto the 75th, where she was born on

im really really enjoying bf now and i have no plans to stop, ive even been helping another new mum who live's on my street.

i truely couldn't of done it without the help and support from you guys as, as you know the support i got in rl was quite shoddy to say the least [ apart from dh of course] although ven my mum is coming round to bf and even said dd was looking well on it the other day!
and shes definatley much less negative about bf.
you probably do not realise hom much you have helped but you really have

anyway ...have a great xmas

also forgot to add that ive still ignored the hv comments to wean early, and dd is going to try her 1st foods next week

I think it's wonderful how a good experience with breastfeeding brings confidence and how this is then shared around other people you meet - like this other mum, and your own mum

It would be lovely if your mum could say how proud she is of you, giving her grandchild such a good start.
