Can we start a 'club' for extended BFers?

DS just turned 1 last week. I just need some friendly support from other moms who have BF toddlers. I am definitely in the minority in RL!!

OP posts:
Tatties · 03/10/2006 18:38

Oh yes GuppinBuppin, bf is the only real solution for ds when he is upset. It's all he wants.

belgo · 03/10/2006 18:38

Tatties - maybe he's just going through a growing spurt? I'm sure it will get better the more he's interested in other things.

belgo · 03/10/2006 18:52

WHo's been bf while reading this? [puts up hand]

kittywits · 03/10/2006 19:02

I am still amazed and saddened that so many of you have experienced prejudice or felt awkward about feeding a baby of say 18 months. I don't understand because when I was still feeding dd2 at 18 + months she was still such a baby still to me . How can anyone think that an infant is too old to bf? Am I just really not aware of what is considered ok and normal? I know it must depend on WHERE you live. Here I don't think it's a prob ( environs of Brighton and Lewes, east sussex)

terramum · 03/10/2006 19:02

Tatties - I think toddler bf is a bit intense at times. DS (26 months) has days where he only has his "wake up juice" (ie his morning feed!) & his bedtime feed & others like today he has been on & off every 2 hours or so. When I mention this at LLL meetings I feel very reassured by all the nodding heads around the room .

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 19:03

actually, 9/10, if I am on MN, I am bfing

mamamaaargh · 03/10/2006 19:22

Spidermama, I like the way you view others as curtailed bf'ers. In fact, no labels is even better. So good to know there are so many of us who view bf as a wonderful thing that should continue as long as m & dc wish. What a great thread.

kiskidee · 03/10/2006 20:38

the best thing to do with cowmad on the bf thread is to ignore, ignore, ignore.

its not the first time cowmad has come to this sort of thread to annoy.

attention seeking.

instead, go here and have a read
this from the breastfeeding consultant for the WHO.

FrankenZooey · 03/10/2006 21:21

My breastfeeding appears to be not only extended but really quite extraordinarily elongated. Ds is 3.5. I never meant to turn into some kind of Nork Empress but hey

popsycal · 03/10/2006 21:31

ds2 is 19 months and still going strong but thank goodness night feeding is now pretty much a thing of the past - been a long time coming!

If we are home, he will feed as a when. His shouts of 'baba' are regular if it is just me and him at home.

However, when there are others arounf and particularly if we are out of the house, he hardly ever asks so I don't offer.

Had a very bizarre expereince at toddler group today. Mams were debating how much milk their toddler drinks and one commented how she had never seen ds2 with a bottle of milk and did he ever have any.....
I replied that he was breast fed. Was greated by a blank look and waited for the penny to drop. then she said 'What?!?!? Do you mean from your boobs?!?!?!'
So I, rather twatfully, said 'That is a synonym for brest, yes'

Then she said 'But isn't that like incense??'
Second mum said 'Don't you mean incest?' which is apparently what she meant....

To which I replied 'Do you know what incest is?'
She replied 'Do you think I am thick or something like!??!'

I decided not to point out that whether she knew the meaning of incest or not, then the answer to her final question was a resounding 'OMFG YES!'

kiskidee · 03/10/2006 21:33

that story belongs in the annals of MN popsy! you can't make up stuff like that. it gotta be fer real.

Sophiev73 · 03/10/2006 21:35

Have just snorted out my cider at your post popsycal...

hoxtonchick · 03/10/2006 21:35

lol popsy .

i am still feeding dd who's 15 months. stopped at 6 months with ds so i'm very proud of myself. dd calls it didi & asks pretty often (in the swimming pool this afternoon...). dp isn't overly keen but just has to lump it frankly. we co-sleep & she feeds a fair amount at night but i'm generally fast asleep. definitely not the thinnest i've ever been, but i do eat a lot of chocolate.

popsycal · 03/10/2006 21:36

I debated abotu posting it for general consumption......
not sure i am brave enough

Mojomummy · 03/10/2006 21:36

I bf DD1 until she was 2 - just mornings & night. And the occasional plane journey when I was desperate to get her to sleep !

Sometimes she drinks EBM because I don't like throwing it away ( trying to get DD2 to take a bottle). Is that weird ? I haven't told anyone else in case it is...

popsycal · 03/10/2006 21:37

my typing is dreadful soorry...
i can spell honest

Sophiev73 · 03/10/2006 21:38

Why would it be weird?? I think it's cool.

Adorabelle · 03/10/2006 21:47

Tatties, you said that bfeeding you Lo at the mo
was a bit intense, I know where you are coming
from babe

Dd is 2.4 now & bout 6 mnths ago I thought I was gonna have to give yp feeding her. She fed CONSTANTLY! This lasted bout 3/4 & ever since feeding her has become a real Joy again. She hardly ever asks for it when out, has totally dropped her bedtime feed (all on her own I might add) & all in all has bout 2 'Proper' feeds in the day now & other feeds tend to be when she upset/tired. It does get easier, I promise. It's almost certainly a phase & will pass I promise

Lovely to read bout all you toddler feeding mummies out there, sometimes in RL feels like you're the only 1 doing it.

Adorabelle · 03/10/2006 21:49

FrankenZooey, think your new name should be Nork Empress, I love it!

FrankenZooey · 03/10/2006 21:52

I am starting to wonder if there is anyone on here left breastfeeding a child older than ds actually

with a sort of odd mix of horror and competitiveness

norkmaiden · 03/10/2006 21:59

coming a bit late to this thread I think - am still bfing 20mo ds. Will def make it to 2 I should think. After that, we'll see...some days I think gah, I've had enough, but mostly it still feels like a lovely thing to be doing. Ds loves his milk, though we're down to bedtime only now.

Adorabelle · 03/10/2006 22:00

LOL franken I love the idea of a group of
competitive mums all vying to bfeed their child
for the longest.

Adorabelle · 03/10/2006 22:03

I would most definately be an elite member, as I
am way to competitive for my own good.

A trait I am hoping I will definately not have passed on to my lovely dd

Just spotted this thread. I'm currently tandem feeding my 3 1/2 yo dd and my 1 yo ds3. Only my close family and one friend knows that I'm doing this as I just got fed up them asking if dd was still feeding, and I'm ashamed to admit that I'm a little embarrassed by it now
