hi im considering breast feeding and the woman seems to know whats she's on about but im confused about a few things
does she mean establish her routines whilst in the hospital
will i not succeed if i dont have an electric expressor
when she says tart with five minutes at each breast to start with does she mean literally just feed for ten minutes
any advice from you who have tried and suceeded or failed with method i'd love to hear from you as ireally want to everything i can to breast feed
thanksGrin

Personally, I'd ditch that book and find one that is actually all about breastfeeding. You'll get far more useful information.

please don't do this

jmum6 · 20/04/2006 20:15

I would do what you feel best doing. I did try to follow her book, but ended up throwing on top of the wardrobe :)

expatinscotland · 20/04/2006 20:15

call an NCT counsellor or ring LaLeche. they can give you MUCH better advice about breastfeeding, trust me.

some women cannot express, but are fine breastfeeding.

Carmenere · 20/04/2006 20:16

Jay lot's of mums on here have used her methods sucessfully but I'm afraid at the moment noone will talk about her as she has made it known that she doesn't like being discussed on mumsnet (to put it mildly). Good luck and try asking general breasfeeding questions with out mentioning her name.

cod · 20/04/2006 20:16

jayjay we haev ahd a some legal probs iwht gina ford
so anythign we say here will be very positive ( sorry if you seem confused)

i never did it dso i cant hel p you.

spinach · 20/04/2006 20:16

but really, i bf for 18 months and will do again, i really dont understand how one can sucessfully breastfeed if following the gf way... i read her stuff too and it really doesnt take account of how bf works for a start. read around a bit.... the most important thing to understand is how bf works physiologically, not how to time it.

morningpaper · 20/04/2006 20:17

I would read as many baby books as possible (for information and because you have the time!) but when it comes to actually having baby, just try to survive the first three months :)

secur · 20/04/2006 20:17

lol, it is a very heated debate, some people love her some people hate her and discussions can get loud!

Don't worry about that, IME feeding when your baby is hungry until your baby is not hungry anymore works really well, however I am sure someone will be along with Gina Ford experience soon.

Good luck with BF watever you decide!

Wow, a thread on BF and GF! Scary

jayjay

In the past MN has been warned about discussing GF and lawyers were threatened.

People are now very cagey about discussing her and her books.

chickenwings · 20/04/2006 20:17

I would take the book with a pinch of salt. It is a great idea to get your baby in a routine but there is no rush. I tried the book and found it too military. You will find your own balance with feeding - there is no right or wrong. I gave up expressing because I felt like a dairy cow but I know others who have found it really easy. Do what works for you.

cod · 20/04/2006 20:18

no she is LOVELY

or ratehr well lets not be specific

secur · 20/04/2006 20:18

and just to add.... please dont worry about breastfeeding, its great, just read up on it, it will help you no end.... the best stuff i read was about breastfeeding 'on demand' which is what i did for 6 months

beansprout · 20/04/2006 20:18

\link{http://www.kellymom.com/\This} is an excellent site for bf information. Please have a look.

I'll put my neck on the line and say that just about all of the women on here who have successfully bf and/or have bf for long periods of time have not followed GF. Someone will doubtless try and prove me wrong but I do have a hunch.

georginarf · 20/04/2006 20:19

JJB, there are problems with GF I'm afraid - her methods tend to arouse polarise feelings on here and we have to be very careful as her lawyers believe she has been defamed on here Smile

But FWIW, the routines may well work for you. however, if you want to establish breasfeeding then unless you are very lucky, the only way to go is to feed on demand (and this might mean pretty much non-stop in the early days/weeks I'm afraid) to start with, and until your supply is properly established. Then you can look at routines. Feeding set times from each breast just ain't going to work. And all babies don't need exactly the same time on a breast, every baby and mother is different!

Think i've been careful enought there haven't I folks?

bundle · 20/04/2006 20:19

she is indeed v nice, i've met her
