How many books do you read in a year?

Allelbowsandtoes · 12/02/2024 07:09

I saw someone on fb post at new year that their resolution was to read 12 books this year which got me wondering how many I get through a year. I have started writing them down out of curiosity, to see.
I'm guessing it'll be around 60 or so....probably because I don't have kids yet so I have much more time on my hands 😄
I'm curious to know how much my fellow book lovers read!

To be fair many adults read children’s books for various reasons. I read children’s book as a result of the work that I do.

I have lost count of the amount of children's books I read, also children's graphic novels. Currently working through Sonic The Hedgehog graphic novels...

mondaytosunday · 12/02/2024 21:16

About 20-25? I only read at night before going to sleep.

ZoeyBartlett · 12/02/2024 21:22

300 a year for last few years.

ALunchbox · 12/02/2024 21:32

Roughly two a month. I used to read much more pre DC but just can't find the time (or energy!) Now

JaneLawrence · 12/02/2024 21:42

I read 81 books last year. I’ve read 8 books so far this year.

Exactly I’ve read one in a day today but it was a) easy b) only 288 pages.

I wonder if we couldn’t pages / words it’d all work out to quite a similar number

If you log your books on StoryGraph it tells you how may pages you've read. Which I agree, would be a more accurate comparison.

Although it's not a competition. It is interesting though.

SisterAgatha · 12/02/2024 22:29

It’s not a competition - reading is for enjoyment - but the “challenge” element does mean that it becomes somewhat competitive. And some might feel disappointed with their low number but perhaps read the bible all year.

Poblano · 12/02/2024 22:31

Between 40-50.

I'm currently only books 7 and 8 of 2024 (one fiction and one non-fiction, I usually have both on the go at the same time).

Sonic graphic novels? Never heard of them - will check it out!

I've apparently read 2,254 pages so far this year.

How do you do this please??

Kindle app on phone (I read on my kindle, but don't know if you can get the stats on the kindle itself).

I don't usually count but I've joined Goodreads this year and have read 7 books since 1st Jan. I recon I can read one a week so 52 by the end of the year maybe.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/02/2024 22:40

Thanks Poblano, just noticed that. Don't think I can remove an image but have reported.

Moier · 12/02/2024 22:47

One a week.( sometimes 3 every two weeks) on holiday l can read three in a week.. usually psychological thrillers.. autobiographical books .. all on my kindle.
I get withdrawal symptoms if l don't have a book on the go.

i used to read a Lot, but brain fog & the interactiveness of MN along with online puzzles and don't read much now.

goldneedle · 12/02/2024 22:49

Around 15. I used to read lots before having children, however my reading slowed down significantly once I had them. I’ve read many children’s books over the years, but I don’t count those (even chapter books)! Now they’re a bit older I have more time to myself again, however I’ve also got a new hobby which is very time consuming, so don’t spend as much time reading as I used to.

tobee · 13/02/2024 02:58

Why did you choose to do the 1,000 book challenge @ZebraPensAreLife? Just wondering when you say it took the joy out of reading.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/02/2024 03:21

I'm in two book groups so that's 24 books a year. I then probably read another couple of books each month. More if I'm on holiday.

I'm struggling to believe the 800+ books a year. That's more than 2 a day. I'm a fast reader but couldn't manage that. I do know that there are books that I could read in 2 or 3 hours so technically it would be doable if you did nothing but read, and only read "easy" books but that would be incredibly boring.

Some of my favourite books are a dense read, you need to take them slowly and really think about them as you do so.

Caspianberg · 13/02/2024 05:51

Oh yes I read lots of children’s books to Ds, but I don’t count those as me reading. They are the likes of the Gruffalo or phonics books and I have read on repeat

HeraSyndulla · 13/02/2024 06:15

Don’t have the time. I have to be at work for 6.30 and I don’t get home until 8. By the time I’ve got in had a shower and eaten something I can hardly keep my eyes open. On my days off I have horses to look after plus I like to see my parents at least once a week. I’ve got three teens to badger and the usual stuff I need to do. And by the time we go to bed there’s only one thing on my mind 🍆 🤭

I read them aloud to my youngest, he loves them. There are loads of them to borrow from most libraries.

SecondUsername4me · 13/02/2024 07:24

During the depths of my child rearing years I averaged 3 a year. Since 2021 I've set reading goals - 21 in 2021, 22 in 2022 etc.

For 2024 - I'm just reading as many as I can. I'm currently on my 11th book. I've also challenged myself to get them from the library first, charity shops after that and only buy new/kindle if under £2.00.

Poblano · 13/02/2024 07:38

I've never counted the books I read to the DC in my total (they're far too old to be read to now though). Likewise I wouldn't count something like a cookbook, or textbooks when I was at university.

I guess the different boundaries for what people include accounts for some of the wild variation in numbers. Also whether you work, whether you have a commute on public transport, the age of your children etc. When my DC were young and I was working FT I probably only managed to finish a handful of my own books a year!

I wanted to see if I could, mainly.
