How many books do you read in a year?

I saw someone on fb post at new year that their resolution was to read 12 books this year which got me wondering how many I get through a year. I have started writing them down out of curiosity, to see.
I'm guessing it'll be around 60 or so....probably because I don't have kids yet so I have much more time on my hands 😄
I'm curious to know how much my fellow book lovers read!

117 last year.

Interestingly, I peaked at 237 in 2019. It was a time I was smoking and drinking a lot, often with a book, and frankly, it wasn't healthy - not enough focus on family, work or health. I did 190 in 2020 but then it dropped back again. I do read the odd paper book in between but I don't think that massively skews my numbers.

I do.read a lot of very light, very easy, probably self published, short books so that ups the number but I have always been an avid reader, and read really fast. I am on 9 so far this year- which tracks.

The last 5 years I’ve read between 25-43 a year. I have a 5yo and a baby and find I struggle to concentrate these days for some of the denser books. Joined a book club last year which has definitely broadened my horizons

WaystarRoy · 12/02/2024 20:11

Just checked my Goodreads accounts and it varies between 30 and 60 a year, I think the difference is how bad my insomnia is and also if I find some really good books to read.

thatwasclose · 12/02/2024 20:13

Around 100 usually. Have kept a tally for a few years now.

BingoMarieHeeler · 12/02/2024 20:14

I’d say I’m a fellow book lover in that I do love reading. But probably 1 book a year in all honesty 😄 I have such a hard time mono-tasking and sitting down and focussing and also just prioritising reading.

Unless we’re counting kids books. That would probably be up in the thousands, a few a night 🙃

Mandarinaduck · 12/02/2024 20:17

10-15. I’m so out of the habit. I have bazillions of unread books around my house because I think of myself as a book person. The reality belies that conceit.

tobee · 12/02/2024 20:19

I think I read about 2 and half last year.

I have started a lot and got into very few of them. I have terrible attention span which has got worse. My smart phone has much to do with this. But also I'm not going to continue reading if my not feeling it. Easy to read, page turner books generally piss me off . Except when they don't. Iyswim.

These are books by the way as opposed to audiobooks.

I'm still trying to up my book reading and love a good book.

It's stupid because I feel embarrassed by my low reading numbers; as if it's a symbol that I'm not a serious, intelligent person. But that's my issue! Grin

From my Kindle and Libby apps, which make up the bulk of my reading:

2023 - 374
2022 - 331
2021 - 450
2020 - 300
2019 - 856 (but actually more than that as this was the year I did the Goodreads reading challenge and got to 1,000 books)

I’m on 36 so far this year.

This sounds like a somewhat extravagant claim! 2 books a day? Kids books?

Fageyoghurt · 12/02/2024 20:23

About 24 plus picture books.

No, random stuff from Kindle Unlimited mainly. Why would I want to read kids books when I’m an adult?

taylorswift1989 · 12/02/2024 20:26

When I was a teenager I could easily read 3 books in a day. Sadly I don't have that kind of time anymore. I read 8 - 10 books a month, on average now.

Hmm Okay 👍

I also have a 2 hour commute each way to work so get through a fair few books on office days!

I did 53 last year and thought I was doing well.

800+ that's multiple books every day!! Confused

I did 13 last year which was very good for me as I have three kids and a job and another hobby which takes over BUT when I asked others whether they would count, say, the Little Mermaid for example - 27 pages - they said yes!

id not even count that. So I think there is some variation on book lengths and intensity

SisterAgatha · 12/02/2024 20:31

Oh I quoted the wrong person 🤣

Hibernatalie · 12/02/2024 20:33

Last year it was 42. I count audiobooks in that. So far this year I'm on my 10th.

If i am on holiday (or in my previous job) or even just having a very chill day i can read 2 adult books

can’t keep it up for 365 days though 😀

I wouldn’t try for 1,000 books in a year again - took a lot of the joy out of reading.

But I do get through at least a book a day, on average.

Yes I'm a fast reader and can easily get through 2 or 3 average length novels in a day if I don't have to do anything else.

But unless your job is reading, I'm not sure how an actual adult has that much spare time. Even if you're super rich, wouldn't you want to watch a film sometimes or have sex with your partner or meet a friend for a coffee?

As Morrissey famously sang, there's more to life than books, you know (but not much more)!

SisterAgatha · 12/02/2024 20:48

Exactly I’ve read one in a day today but it was a) easy b) only 288 pages.

I wonder if we couldn’t pages / words it’d all work out to quite a similar number

SisterAgatha · 12/02/2024 20:48

Counted*

jhpf · 12/02/2024 20:53

I get you @taylorswift1989

I probably read one a day novel length with multiple children. Plus work. Plus I read to kids x four every night one book each, don't count those. So if I had time, to sit and read, I could be two or three a day.

But I read at a strangely fast speed. I can't read it twice, unless it's for work, like a contract.

I could never read a book twice. I start and it's like something weird happens. So give me a book, no cover, maybe two pages I'm like I have read this, can't do it again.

And it has to be written well and something I'm able to cope with.

I cannot do science fiction, not even a page. The words just swim and nothing goes in.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 20:55

12 typically unless I do a transatlantic crossing on qm2 then it's 4 more, sitting in a nook overlooking the sea reading can't be beat

jhpf · 12/02/2024 21:00

@ZebraPensAreLife yes I think that would for me as well. We had to do a family school nursery world book challenge.

I mean dear zoo counted the same as a little life.

It was over 30 days and I was not sure how to record it.

So didn't. Felt a bit like a nasty competition.

Some can't read, some don't read, some kids want to, some don't. Some people took time off work. It just didn't go down in the way the school thought.

Hmm Okay 👍

To be fair many adults read children’s books for various reasons. I read children’s book as a result of the work that I do.
