How many books do you read in a year?

Allelbowsandtoes · 12/02/2024 07:09

I saw someone on fb post at new year that their resolution was to read 12 books this year which got me wondering how many I get through a year. I have started writing them down out of curiosity, to see.
I'm guessing it'll be around 60 or so....probably because I don't have kids yet so I have much more time on my hands 😄
I'm curious to know how much my fellow book lovers read!

I read around 30 a year but loads of the books I read are 600+ pages so surely they should count as double Wink

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 12/02/2024 18:50

Wow.

WHat kind of books are people reading that they can get through these kind of quantities???

I just can’t understand it.

hopeishere · 12/02/2024 18:55

I did 53 last year and thought I was doing well.

800+ that's multiple books every day!! Confused

user1471554720 · 12/02/2024 18:56

I don't keep count but I read a book a week, maybe a bit more. I always have a book. I read each evening for half am hour to an hour. I do this instead of watching tv. I often cannot find good things on tv.

I am early 50s, have two tweens, work 5 days a week. I often jog in the mornings or walk on a summer's evening too. I think it is a nice balance, I am not spending hours reading but can get through a good few books.

cheezncrackers · 12/02/2024 18:59

35-40 a year. I've done the Goodreads Reading Challenge for several years now so I'm quite familiar with how many I read. It used to be more when I was commuting to work every day by train. Back then I managed about a book a week.

I read all sorts. Basically if it has words I'll read it.

But I don't work currently due to severe anxiety/depression. I have insomnia. And no small children.

TheMainCharacter · 12/02/2024 19:04

Last year I read around 80 which I’m surprised at because I didn’t think I had read much at all. I did have 2 week holiday though which helped

TheMainCharacter · 12/02/2024 19:06

That’s not including the books I’ve read to my children which would add on multiple books a day!

FleurdeSel · 12/02/2024 19:08

At least 100 books a year or 2 a week. I read every morning and for an hour each night before sleep. I'm on book 22, mostly because we did a social media detox challenge with work.

I work full time, DC are late teens in school.

800 books is 2 a day?

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 12/02/2024 19:11

Probably average a book a day since I started using Kindle Unlimited, because a LOT of the books on there only seem to be about 60,000 words max.
I can read a couple of those shorter length books in a day easily in between everything else I'm doing.

From my Kindle and Libby apps, which make up the bulk of my reading:

2023 - 374
2022 - 331
2021 - 450
2020 - 300
2019 - 856 (but actually more than that as this was the year I did the Goodreads reading challenge and got to 1,000 books)

I’m on 36 so far this year.

How???? 3 books a day in 2019?! 😍😍

Workawayxx · 12/02/2024 19:14

I’d estimate 30. I have an 11 yo and a 3 yo so time is in fairly short supply. I remember the days when I’d half fill my suitcase with books for a 2 week holiday.

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 12/02/2024 19:15

Generally two a week, so around 100.

Ellie525 · 12/02/2024 19:15

Average 30-50 per year altho bizarrelt have read more since having baby as got fed up of TV programmes/films being interrupted every 20mins so now I just go to bed with a book and find I get a few chapters in between wake ups/resettles

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 12/02/2024 19:21

Last year I read 35. With a stressful full time job and a child/moving house / helping ill parents I was really proud of myself. Also, I focused on quality literature rather than a page turner (think K S Slater type thrillers which I normally read). I promised myself I'd read a few classics and then read different books from different countries and diverse authors to learn more about countries I probably won't visit and their history.

I'm going to try to read 40 this year. I have two on the go at the moment and I have read 3 books. I've been quite stressed at work and have had a bit of a slump but found a great book over the weekend and I am back on it again.

Caspianberg · 12/02/2024 19:21

Not many, maybe 10 last year?
I used to read loads more, probably 200+, but since Ds was born I don’t really have time. I can’t read and concentrate with small child around, and by the time he’s asleep I’m often too tired to start a book so just fall asleep or read quicker news on phone.

I used to read an hour every night, plus lots on train, travelling etc.

clarepetal · 12/02/2024 19:25

I'm averaging about 50 a year. Thought it was a lot till I saw other people posts!

bluemumsbluedog · 12/02/2024 19:33

I read about 2 a week so about 100 a year though if I've a quiet day or two I can get through a book in a day. My children are young adults now and I hardly read a book when they were small, although I devoured books through my childhood and teenage years.

It's not a competition though, is it? Don't compare yourself to others who might be lying or reading children's books. You don't need another thing to feel under pressure over.

achangewoulddougood · 12/02/2024 19:49

I used to be around 40 a year, at least. Last 10 years I've struggled to do 10 or sometimes even 5 a year. I'm getting into audio books now though and in the last 3 months have done 4 as well as physically reading 2, so I feel it's keeping me "on top" of my reading list. I still have an ever increasing pile next to the bed though and I am fairly sure some of those have been there gathering dust for over 5 years Shock

Mine are all on kindle and you can check via reading insights.
2019: 39
2020: 68
2021: 114
2022: 100
2023: 90
2024: 14 to date

I read a lot more again now my kids are older (late teen and young adult).

How do you do this please??

In my case it tends to be random mystery / crime stuff on Kindle Unlimited (and now Libby). I’m naturally a very fast reader and have a long commute.

But reading isn’t a competition. If people enjoy what they’re reading, that’s the only thing that matters.

Tarahumara · 12/02/2024 19:53

Between 50 and 60.

NC2024 · 12/02/2024 20:00

I kept a record one year and it was 368
