I'll be voting Lib Dem although it is unlikely to make much difference to the outcome of my local election. 😐

Anyone else rolling their eyes at the surprise over the numbers Reform are pulling?

OP posts:
MissUnicorn · 05/07/2024 03:14

Yep. It's not a surprise at all.

Maggiethecat · 05/07/2024 09:09

It’s the normalisation of their racist views that disturbs me.

No. People underestimate how much racist people are out there. We really need to understand as poc, how much we are just about tolerated. It is not palatable to admit it, but we are living our lives without really recognising the constant threat to us, and our children. I know that I am speaking in broad terms, but we need to understand how vulnerable we actually are, and support each other more, in our everyday lives, and provide our children with the scaffolding they need, so when they are out there, they are not naked. I am not normally emotional, but the Windrush scandal, has shown that life here is not built on a solid foundation, and the fact is reform are not going anywhere.

Catsfishybreath · 05/07/2024 09:42

It was bad how the media treated Dianne Abbot. Why is this country scared of clever confident women ?

Maggiethecat · 05/07/2024 09:47

Aah Fishy, see what you’re doing there.

Catsfishybreath · 05/07/2024 09:48

Guavafish1 · 19/06/2024 23:21

would never vote for a racist party that treats Diane abbot in.such a horrible way

Dianne Abbott like Corbin was demonised by the media . Unfortunately people believe what they read in the press . Politics is unfair and brutal . That's why they tried to cancel her as they needed to revamp their image and win this election . I believe this country is scared of Educated confident women. I hope like a phoenix she can rise from the ashes .

@LadyKenya - they’re taking their country back according to Anne Widdecombe.

Mmmm, another person, spouting vile, harmful rhetoric. The fact that so many agree with her disgusting sentiments cannot be overlooked though.

Starseeking · 05/07/2024 11:52

Despite the number of seats they have got being low, Reform are now the third party in the UK as their number and share of votes (4 million and 14%) leapfrogged Lib Dem's 3.5 million and 12%). The only thing stopped them gaining a bigger voice in Parliament is the FPTP voting system we have in the UK.

I've posted these images elsewhere on MN, now also here as it shows how fast the far right is rising. Nobody is listening to the disenfranchised people who voted for them, which only means their frustration will only increase, and their numbers swell.

We should all be very worried about the votes going to Reform, and what they represent.

This thread does not make good reading - but to round off my point above, I will be interested to see how the Labour leadership behaves towards Diane Abbott now she has retained her seat.

(Obviously there are other pressing matters - but that might be reflective of what others might now expect from the government.)

Maggiethecat · 05/07/2024 12:20

@Starseeking - agree with you. The disenfranchised will find a home in Reform which will promise them the earth.

True. The Post Office scandal was terrible but every time they say it is the biggest miscarriage of justice in UK history, I wince. #Windrush.

Thanks to what happened to me and my DD in the last year I am well aware of the racism plus complete and utter ignorance some people with any power have on British colonial history.

I don't view each scandal that's happened worse than the other depending on who it affects because the UK government and their authorities/agencies have a habit of repeating their racism on British citizens of colour and the global majority. This is not helped by the people they put in charge being from the same very narrow section of society.

The thing is, that the Windrush scandal, will just be quietly forgotten, by the media etc. There are people who died without receiving a penny in compensation. The Government made money available for that purpose, while also putting so many obstacles in peoples way, making it impossible for some people to claim what they should have been able to. They never stop with their tricks, when it comes to the wrongdoing against black people, poc.

LadyKenya · 05/07/2024 21:21

They knew who these people were, when they were raiding their homes, and sticking them in detention centers, before deporting them. But these same people who lost their homes, pensions, right to NHS care etc, are now expected to fill in lengthy forms, and produce documents going back decades, that the powers that be know will be neigh on impossible for them to do. They also expected deported, elderly people to keep phoning the uk, to check whether they were able to come back. They did not even bother to tell them, that they could.

Truth! It still makes me sick to think about the lives have been damaged or changed for ever by the Windrush scandal. Many still haven't received compensation. As for Suella Braverman...

If anyone deserved to lose their seat...

Suella and Kemi are last people I would chose as credible representations of powerful women of colour.

OP posts:

I agree. People always wheel out those names to try to prove a point about the party not being racist, as well. And the fact that they had an Asian PM🤨. The less I say about Kemi, the better.
