Not sure if this will appear in Active but really I just want to hear the experiences and opinions of Black (and even Asian) MNetters here.

Given the descent into racism of this site, are there any other non-racist ones you’d recommend? I’ve had a look at Tattle and quite frankly that’s worse so it’s a no from me. Plus they’re kind of obsessed with “influencers”, in whom I have no interest.

It’s just a shame that the racism has seeped into all boards here - even TV and S&B is no longer safe. Anywhere else that isn’t a total cesspit?

Not to mention the so-called legal experts who run to Google and Wikipedia in their desperate desire to prove what a wrong ‘un someone like MM is…

And it's all with the self satisfied veneer of golly gosh aren't we a bunch of no nonsense sensible women who know these people are wrong uns - for reasons......

From what I’ve seen in AIBU, many are more nonsense than sensible. The amount of posters calling women they never met cows, b**ches, etc, is staggering and for small things at that. The way many talk about female celebrities period is awful yet bring up the “T” word and they’re for all women. 🙄

I have yet had any such poster explain to me why MM has people saying lovely things about her in North America yet when she comes here, she’s all of a sudden a bully and xyz. Not surprising tbh, considering how many are xenophobic about Americans and think it’s perfectly fine to comment on the country but not ok for Americans to comment about the UK, even though the average American very likely doesn’t think about the UK other than mainly love the accents, London, the RF and that’s pretty much it.

In all my years on Mumsnet I’ve never seen as many threads dedicated to tearing apart one person as I have the threads about MM.

Though it’s not just her of course. I’m a tennis fan but couldn’t go on the tennis thread on MN because the posters all hated Serena Williams, for some mysterious reason, can’t think what it might be…

Oh and of course Diane Abbott is another one - you can guarantee threads about her drip with vitriol too. I’ll never forget a poster describing one of our longest-serving MPs and the first black female MP as “strutting around like the secretary in the typing pool who’s slept with the boss” when Jeremy Corbyn became Labour leader.

But none of this has to do with race, of course not!

I think that successful black women upset people because they are against their idea of the natural order. It's acceptable for black women to be successful if they are entertainers but any other kind of success isn't meant to be for them. Seeing it ignites a desire for white people to tear them down.

I’d also add a sense of they should be grateful to be allowed in such circles as if they were specifically hand-picked and couldn’t have possibly got where they are by their own merit and/or hard work.

Rege · 01/03/2024 22:03

To be fair it's not just successful black women they have a problem with, its the men too - Lewis Hamilton is hated on MN for some reason, when Kobe Bryant died and a thread was started to commemorate him and his achievements posters quickly piled and on and talked non stop about the historical rape case as a reason why his name should not EVER be mentioned, the thread abruptly came to end despite people imploring these posters that they would like to express their sadness at his death and that of his young talented daughter, it came to end. Stephen Bartlett apparently goes on and on about himself and is not talented.

I just remembered when the amazingly talented Amanda Gorman delivered her amazing poem at Biden's inauguration there was a thread full of scorn with comments like, 'she was doing my head in' , some critiqued her poem with, 'i have a degree in Literature!' and described flawed in how she wrote. Oprah naturally is hated, Naga Munchetty always draws comments like, 'I can't quite figure out why she irritates me'.
The most memorable comment I've seen on MN was on a thread about beautiful women/celebrities, i think a black women was mentioned and this poster came on to say a certain writer had famously said 'A woman with a slim straight form, was the epitome of good breeding!'Grin.

AnotherCoffeeBreak · 01/03/2024 22:11

The MM threads are despicable. I cannot believe MN allows them to stand.

“i have a degree in Literature” 🤣🤣🤣

The sheer arrogance of these keyboard warriors 🤦🏾‍♀️

I always wonder what that is supposed to mean. I have a degree in a field, doesn’t make me an expert. Many literary greats didn’t have degrees either nor is one needed to write something meaningful. Several of them being women who wouldn’t have been able/allowed to get a degree in the first place, but let’s just ignore such things.

Just say it’s not your taste without being a tw*t.

PinotGrogio · 02/03/2024 09:59

They’re just so accomplished aren’t they? Legal experts, stylists to the stars, feminist warriors, skilled political operators, Nobel prize winners for literature. It’s a wonder they have the time to sit on Mumsnet and tear apart women of colour!

Easy to have time when it is all in one’s head and not reality.

I can be many things using my imagination. 😉

PinotGrogio · 02/03/2024 17:39

Oh god, I’d forgotten how weird they are about Oprah too. Everything she’s achieved in her life is dismissed on account of the one interview she did with MM. Oprah is an amazing woman who came from very little - I’d like to see them achieve as much with just half the barriers she had!

OP posts:
skullbabe · 02/03/2024 18:10

Yeah the Oprah thing is very odd because they can’t keep a narrative as to why they just don’t like her. The turn on her has been interesting to see.

Right. She was victim of repeated SA from age 9, became pregnant at 14, and losing the baby prematurely. She was scrutinised for decades about her weight, her relationships with Stedman and Gayle, etc. How many billionaires can say they came from such? She’s interviewed many celebrities yet interviewing PH and MM discredits her?

How ridiculous. They obviously wanted her to be nasty to them like Piers Morgan who they also supposedly don’t like except when it comes to MM. Surprising they don’t see an issue with a married man such as himself obsessed with another woman and going out of his way to act like a spurned lover, yet by what they say in AIBU, they would tell his wife to LTB.

NewNameNigel · 02/03/2024 18:36

One thing that always makes me feel uncomfortable is when white posters use racism as a sort of trump card to make a point about other unrelated issues. It's often completely inappropriately used and shows that the person making it has no idea what racism actually is. If a black poster points this out they are piled on and get sucked into trying to explain racism to people who ultimately don't give a shit about it because it doesn't impact them.

PinotGrogio · 02/03/2024 19:17

Or they say they can’t possibly be racist because they love Michelle Obama. Or that MM should be more like Michelle.

Michelle is not their get out of jail free card!

I’m guessing they mean FL Michelle not her afterwards. Bet they ignore the sh*t she went through similar to MM as First Lady for 8 years and in her own country at that knowing what she would encounter. MM did not despite some acting like she did and it was definitely a lot of xenophobia mixed into it that they choose to ignore. It took me the same amount of time she was here to realise how xenophobic some are to Americans and I didn’t have a camera highlighting and judging my every move nor was I warned because how do you warn about something you don’t experience and I moved here during the Obama presidency.

I have been corrected on my English, despite being heard already correcting myself and switching back and forth from American to British English. Jokes made about my unemployment despite me having to wait months for an NI number hence me not being able to work to begin with. I had to locate how to get one (DH didn’t know how since he is a citizen and never had to think how it worked) nor was such information given to me on how by the government when I moved. Assumptions made about my life and surprise that it wasn’t like what they heard on the news. Being reported at work for saying things yet no one could tell me what I actually did or said wrong. One was from HR because I dared asked to leave a Christmas lunch early when we were backlogged. I was asked by other colleagues if we could leave so I went and asked. I could have just upped and left but thought it was polite to ask. Thankfully, one of the higher ups spoke up for me and explained what was going on but was suggested to give an apology for upsetting her to smooth things. Told two of my British colleagues about this and they thought it was ridiculous. Another workplace, had a manager call Americans savages over a Netflix doc about a man murdering his wife and kids as if such violence has never ever happened in the UK. I’ve listened and watched enough true crime to know such things happen here too. She said this in front of other employees and then said later she didn’t mean it that way. Same manager that was going to give me a bad mark on my appraisal because I was almost late once in the whole eight months I worked under her. I actually made it but before I could sign in she about blocked me and started questioning me as I was heading to do so making me officially late. I resigned right before Christmas with my last day Christmas Eve. Most of these encounters have been mainly from other women, not men, but saying that gets a pile-on.

This use of Black people/racism really^^ annoys me. I usually point it out then leave the thread, as I don't fancy the pile on that will inevitable ensue.

Krampers · 03/03/2024 15:37

Basically anyone black and successful including mixed race gets a pile on/questioned/treated with suspicion by British white people simply because it is in their genes to look down on people. It is why the class system exists.

Rege · 03/03/2024 16:25

They like a certain type though - Frank Bruno & Alison Hammond are both well liked. Frank, I need not explain. Alison is bubbly, 'entertaining', struggles with her weight and they love an underdog, so she earns their sympathy in typical 'saviour' way. If she were slim & beautiful that would be another story. I did notice however that when there was a thread suggesting who could take over from Holly Willoughby, Alison was never mentioned neither was a more obvious choice 'Rochelle Humes'.

And the hate for Alison as a potential bake off host.

I reported a really outrageous thread (on another board not this one) and MNHQ agreed it was racist, however said they would leave it up as it had been robustly challenged Angry

If they won’t take this board out of active they need to be more willing to take action against the ploppers who come here time and time again to disrupt discussion. Doesn’t the feminist board have a three strikes rule?
