Urgent School say my Sons hair is too short!

My son told me last night, that the his hair is cut too short. The school have had, if it happens again, that he will have to go into isolation until it grows to a acceptable level. I need to contact school this morning to speak to them about it. It looks neat and tidy and it grows really quickly. His hair is mixed and he doesn’t look after it properly. Is there anything, that’ll can say to the school, or will l just have to accept that it’s too short?

But the rule is that he can't have a fade haircut and he has had a fade haircut, why is that discriminatory, especially when his hair is longer on top.

Comefromaway · 07/05/2021 14:58

The reasons why black men and boys have fade haircuts have already been explained upthread.

memberofthewedding · 07/05/2021 15:13

Schools whingeing about petty uniform details, hair cuts, telling parents when they can go on holiday. Its time parents began banding together and lashing back against these mini despots.

Update, l have spoken to the HoY about the Haircut. I did apologise as it was against the school hair policy,, which hadn’t wasn’t on my mind, when he returned from the barbers with his Dad.The HoY, said my son wouldn’t go into isolation , if it happened again but instead he would lose break time. I think maybe 3 days until it grew a bit longer. I did say about his hair being afro and that it’s difficult to keep it tidy. He did say that the haircut did look neat, but it was a little too short as it states in the school hair policy. He said that it needs to be a little bit longer next time.To be honest after this conversation, l am not going to take it further. He was very nice about it all. If he wasn’t then maybe it would be a different outcome. Again, thank to everyone who commented on this thread.

Glad you feel okay about the outcome OP and that the teacher wasn't arsey.
Schools can be utterly ridiculous at times!

picturesandpickles · 07/05/2021 22:23

Really glad your HOY was reasonable, gives you a bit of hope.

Wavypurple · 07/05/2021 22:26

I’m not a parent myself, I’m actually in shock that this is a rule.

That is so bizarre. What a stupid rule.

I still think this is a non issue - the school are idiots about things that don't matter but schools don't like to ever admit they are wrong. It's stuff like this that slowly over the years has eroded my respect for the teaching profession. Thankfully we are done with schools this year.
Zzelda · 08/05/2021 11:46

@Dontjudgeme101

The thing is, is it discrimination? None of the boys are allowed to have shaved heads whether its black or european hair.
But your son's hair wasn't shaven, it wasn't even close to it.
Dontjudgeme101 · 08/05/2021 12:09

I meant having any part of their head shaved. Having a fade does include shaving at the back of the head.

OP posts:
memost · 08/05/2021 12:52

Any part? There must be a percentage coming in here because it's standard practice for barbers to shave around the hairline to tidy it up. I just wish schools would focus on something a bit more educational.

RedMarauder · 08/05/2021 13:06

@Faultymain5 Sikhs are also an ethnic group in the UK.

That's because they come from the Punjab region of Asia. There was a court case in 1983 - Mandla vs Dowell-Lee - were this was ruled.

So it would be racial as well as religious discrimination.

(Just thought posters need to be aware of this when talking about Sikhs.)

RedMarauder · 08/05/2021 13:08

@memost I forgot that men specifically black men have their hair line shaped by shaving.

All school policies are available for you to read before you select what schools to apply for. If you don’t like it then vote with your feet. My school isn’t strict on hair or uniform at all, but it is firm about holidays as it does have an impact on their education.

Faultymain5 · 14/05/2021 16:16

To me that’s a bit of a nonsense. We don’t hav a choice of schools.

Faultymain5 · 14/05/2021 16:17

Unless we’re paying for them and that’s not a sure thing.

ArabellaScott · 14/05/2021 17:57

Aye, no choosing of schools here, unless you wanted a journey of 2 hours each way! That's a ludicrous argument.

You are to totally clueless - choice is an illusion! You got lucky but you see that as choice, I hope you know that.

@Dontjudgeme101 does this picture help?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 15/05/2021 09:50

That’s a good photo! But if you have thick and/or curly hair it looks quite different. If I do a 3 (or even a 3) on DS, it still looks thick / you can’t see scalp. He has the thickest hair I’ve ever seen.

SkedaddIe · 15/05/2021 09:58

I actually don't think the school is being racist at all.

If I'm understanding correctly OP son has a bald fade with a level 2 on top. It's not the level 2 that's the problem it's the bald sides and fade.

To get your son back to school quicker take him to the barber and get a level 1 (Caesar) with a line up. It's even shorter but it looks less extreme and fashioney so the school might accept it. And it looks good too imo.

Personally I would apologise too for the misunderstanding.

I agree. A #2 with curly hair is much shorter because straight hair lies flat when you're cutting it with shears.

And traditionally when talking about levels white people cut with the grain not against it. At least that's my experience from dealing with this at school and the RAF

toffeebutterpopcorn · 15/05/2021 10:08

I think as long as the hair is clean and brushed/smart Then it should be fine. Not sure about weird and wonderful colours (definitely no swears cut into it). But I suppose someone made the rule and they have to enforce it. I ask them to have a bit of a rethink.

SkedaddIe · 15/05/2021 10:11

Sorry for the Drake pic but it's difficult to find a Caesar without the fade these days. I think the bald back and sides would grow out to this level in a few days and the school should accept this as a compromise on a level 2 (obviously without the line)

I've literally met the queen with this haircut when I was a teen. It should be more than acceptable for school.
