Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Chloe55 · 20/07/2010 18:48

Lulabel I can not believe Easyjet did that I would actually take that to the papers! How ridiculous that they wouldn't allow you to board. Fair enough if you were heavily pg and they feared you might go into labour mid flight or as someone said you had something catching but early pregnany???? Unbelievable. Nice pic by the way.

wigglesrock · 20/07/2010 19:53

Horrible horrible Queasyjet!! Had my midwife booking appt yesterday, really pleased with how it went As I said before I have moved to a different health board, so was nervous about new hospital, gp surgeries etc but the midwives were brillant - no pressure about how to feed the baby, no hugely invasive questions, really nice and chatty. I also started new job yesterday so feeling very pleased with myself, but actually back to being vvvv sick.

smallblackflowers · 20/07/2010 20:06

Lovely pic lulabel

My NT scan is free - going to Bolton Hospital - although they didn't provide it 2 years ago when I was pg with DD, so feeling quite chuffed that I'll have £180 extra in my bank account as I had already earmarked it.

I've not been feeling too bad this afternoon, quite perky actually, so fingers crossed the ms is starting to ramp down. It was 15 weeks last time - I remember thinking omg I'm hungry and don't feel sick, it was a revelation!

AnathemaDevice · 20/07/2010 22:05

We get the Nuchal scan on the NHS here (Southend), but I'm not having it- just the straightforward dating scan, which will be on the 3rd August.

Got my first lot of blood tests tomorrow, which is something to look forward to, I don't think... I'm sure the midwife did them at the booking in appointment last time, but I've moved since then, so maybe it's different depending on where you live.

Didn't feel very sick this morning, I'm not sure if I should be pleased or worried! I can't remember when it wore off last time, I think it was at about 13 weeks. Still knackered though- I've been in bed by 9.30 the last 2 nights in a row.

Have any of you started thinking about names yet, or is it too early? I'm trying to convince DH to start seriously thinking about it, because I know that it's going to take us until the baby is born to agree on anything. Mind you, I'm not going to listen too closely to him- he wanted to name DS 'Fernando', after Fernando Torres.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/07/2010 02:27

Hello -- just back from holiday and attempting to catch up...

I'm in SW London and get a nuchal scan free on the NHS, but am toying with the idea of getting one done privately at the FMC as they will do the blood tests and process them while you have the nuchal scan so that you get the combined risk immediately afterwards, plus they measure more things, plus if there is a high-risk result you can have a CVS the same day, plus DH is away the day my NHS scan is booked for and I'd like him to be there. But it seems a bit wasteful when I could have the NHS scan free.

We have been tossing around a few names -- may even have agreed on a girl's name, although very tentatively. DH is quite unreasonably not agreeing with me on boys' names, though. Generally we don't get serious about names until after the 20 week scan, but this time around I think we've already eliminated about 99.9% of all possible names in previous discussions so we have a smaller pool to choose from...

I have been referring to this pregnancy as "the triplets" largely to wind DH up but have found I've half-convinced myself that there will be more than one -- I catch myself thinking "Mmm, it's going to be tricky managing two small babies in the pool next year..." or similar thoughts and have to remind myself that I have no reason to suppose that there's more than one. And then I flip from that into convincing myself that I'm going to discover a missed m/c at the nuchal scan so there's not going to be a baby at all... I will probably be a nervous wreck by mid-August!

tadjennyp · 21/07/2010 05:32

I know what you mean about worrying - I have to go to the OB/GYN next week and I have no idea whether he will do another scan at 12 weeks but I'm hoping he will at least check for a heart beat and then let me know what the other options are. I will probably have to pay a small amount towards it but the prices are never upfront so you can't really budget properly! Hope you had a great holiday professor.

Chloe55 · 21/07/2010 08:28

Our nuchal test is on the nhs but I don't think we will be having it either as I am pretty sure I will prob not change the way I go about things for either outcome so it seems unecessary to me.

Right, am starting to feel pretty neglected by my midwife (which was exactly what happened last time due to me having my baby in the hospital that wasn't my home town). Can you please tell me what the 'booking in' appointment is and if any of you are having bloods done before your dating scan. I ahve so far seen the community midwife at our gp's when I was 5 weeks pg. She gave me a form to send off for my medical exemption card thingy and an envelope with some info on my scan. She also asked what hospital I would have the baby at and that was it. She weighed me and sent me on my way not to be seen again until my scan at the hospital at 12 weeks. I haven't had a urine sample done or even my blood pressure taken - does this sound right to you?

angels1 · 21/07/2010 08:52

chloe55 can't help on booking in, as i haven't been booked in yet, but just wanted to say I havent' seen a midwife at all yet! Saw GP to confirm pg early on, but she didn't want to refer me to midwife until I got past the time I mc last time (about 6 - 7 weeks). went to her at 8 weeks when coincidently had had bleeding the day before, and she refered me for emergency scan but again wouldn't refer me to midwives until after scan said all OK. This week (9 weeks) she FINALLY referred me! I don't think it matters too much (???), and I'm hoping not to have any appointments any time soon at any rate as I feel so sick all the time I don't think I could make it anyway.

Up until now, I've had extreme hunger all the time (sort of mixed with sickness, so I have to eat or I feel sick) but this week it's changed to more of a 'normal' appetite, but dtronger feeling sick all the time, unrelated to when and whether I eat. Has anyone else had this? Can anyone excite me with the possibility that this could be the start of things changing/getting better soon, or am I confined to feeling more sick for weeks to come?! Crisps seem to be my new only food that works well - is 4 packs a day too much?! I swear I hardly ever ate junk like crisps before I was pregnant!

Deliaskis · 21/07/2010 09:13

Wow there really is a lot of variation on who gets NS free and who doesn't. I absolutely don't mind paying for it, but I do think it should be the same for everyone.

Chloe55 I had my booking in apt last Friday, and they basically asked lots of questions about your family medical history to screen you for risk factors during pregnancy. Mine was quite straightforward as we don't really have any 'history of...' conditions in our family. They then took blood for a whole range of stuff and made my apts for further things - confirmed 12 wk scan date and booked apt at 16 wks and 20wks.

And that was it really.

D

ledkr · 21/07/2010 09:27

I don't want to keep being seen by gp or mw esp over summer can always go if need to. makes me cross that some areas doing nucal free for everyone and I'm 43 and have to pay. This is not possible for everyone maybe those on low income. I am going to fmc on Wed but thinking about it would have done that even if free cos more detailed tests and experienced Dr. Hi prof. Was wondering where you were. didn't know you gone on holiday. can't wait for mine. Kids broke up today so having a ly in today watching Jeremy vile

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/07/2010 09:32

Chloe, in my previous pregnancies booking in has been at about 12/13 weeks, around the same time as the scan. This time it will be earlier, at around 10 weeks something I don't know whether that's so they can run extra blood tests before the nuchal scan (they didn't do a combined NT/bloods result when I was pregnant with DD but have introduced it since). Up until now I've only seen the GP to get referred on this time she did check blood pressure and urine, but every other time I've seen a GP to get referred in early pregnancy (and this is my sixth pregnancy, so that's been quite a bit) they've either just checked blood pressure or haven't checked anything and no further anything until I saw mw for booking in around 12/13 weeks.

Booking in they ask lots of questions and take lots of blood. If you've had previous children they are likely to talk through how those births and pregnancies went.

I wouldn't terminate for Down's but probably would for Edwards, I think, and I would like to know about Down's in advance if possible. Also I am old (well, old-ish) so will have a fairly high base level of risk and would like to see a scan bring that down a bit.

Chloe55 · 21/07/2010 10:04

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. I think it all still feels a little surreal for me as other than a little stick I peed on and feeling crappy I haven't seen any medical proof as such. Funny how our minds play tricks on us!

Goodness me - 6 kids Prof? And there's me hoping I will cope ok with 2!

Lulabel27 · 21/07/2010 10:14

Thank you for your kind message re: scan picture! And yes my fiance wants us to take it further with horrible easyjet- I just don't have the energy at the moment, maybe when I feel better!

Sounds like everyones appointment times and treatment is different and it seems really unfair some people haven't even seen a midwife yet. I think it's important to remember that this forum ranges with pregnancies from 13 weeks to 8/9 weeks so I suppose there will be a slight variation in timings and not to worry too much (easier said than done!)

As for names, I can think of loads of boys names I love but no girls names!! Not one at all... hmmmm!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/07/2010 10:22

Nonono. I only have two children so far (this will be my third if everything works out) but I have a tendency towards early miscarriage so it's my sixth pregnancy. I haven't made it to booking in / out of the first trimester with three of them.

Six children would be... interesting...

Chloe55 · 21/07/2010 10:28

Oh sorry (I just thought you were a little mad ) - I am kidding to all you ladies hoping for a football team!!

We have a girls name but no boys name. DH wants Arthur er......no.

KnitterNotTwitter · 21/07/2010 10:42

leelteloo so sorry to hear your news ? sending you a big hug and fingers crossed for next time?

AnathemaDevice Welcome to the board I?ve added you to the stats?

Lulabell That?s you back to the top of the stats list then?.!! Love the scan photo ? made me all soggy eyed in the office! Re a London meet-up I work in Victoria and would be keen?.

Chloe I quite like Arthur - had a lovely cat called Arthur when I was little

Gina glad your chickens are ok - mine have gone a bit mental ever since i fed them some left over baked beans - they loved them and every time they see me they think I'm going to give them more!!

RE Scans: We get the Nuchal fold test for free at the same time as the dating scan. I had my blood tests yesterday and we get the results at the scan next week too. Everything seemed fine - the midwife who did all the paperwork for the bloods with me was lovely and listened very attentatively to all my stories about birth of DS and the ectopic - very theraputic!

RE Names: DS was called after two of our grandparents so in theory if this one is a son then he'll get the other two grandpa names - Charles and Martin. The only problem is that I don't like either of them with our surname.... So fingers crossed for a girl - I like Charlotte and think that DH would go for that....

You have proved my point Twitter - you named your cat Arthur

angels1 · 21/07/2010 11:09

Isn't it funny how names are so personal and make different peopl ethink of totally different things - when I think of Arthur I think {said in a masculine film voice over style} king arthur and the knights of the round table!

I quite like older fashioned type names, although I have an old fashioned name myself and love it now but hated it when I was younger.

It's sort of family tradition that the first boy/girl in my families have their mother/fathers name as their middle name, so that bits easy sorted! I also wouldnlike to have a first name from a relative (especially those no longer with us), it sort of feels like they live on through the years. My great grandmother was called Bessie and I love that name. Sadly, DH thinks if we had a girl and called it Bessie it would be teased forever due to 'aunt bessies' yorkshire puddings!lol. Also had a relative with the name 'Flora'which I think is a lovely name....if it only wern't for the margarine!!

For a boy I think DH wants to name it after his grandad who died last year, but his name was Malcom which I really don't like. I like Peter (my great grandad was called Peter) or David (DH's fathers name). But, then, I hate 'Pete' and 'Dave' so would have to be very strict about not shortening it.

I think I'll try and wait until we find out the sex before we think to much about names. Mind you, it would be amusing to be told we would have a boy, spend months choosing a name we agree on and then have a girl!

My Mum and Dad waited until I was born to see what name I looked like before they named me.

Deliaskis · 21/07/2010 11:11

Agree ledkr, it means that for an awful lot of people in the 'unlucky' areas, the decision is going to be based on whether a family can afford it rather than on clinical need. I had a bit of a feeling of 'guilt' about this when I was thinking of not having it as didn't 'want' to spend the money (as in will have to go a little bit overdrawn to pay for it this month, no biggie, but not ideal) - seemed a very mercenary decision to make, but for a lot of people it's simply not an option.

If the scan is of value, then everybody should have it, if not, anyone who wants it should pay regardless of where they live.

It's the sort of thing I would make a bit of a fuss about if I didn't have other things to worry about right now.

D

KnitterNotTwitter · 21/07/2010 11:14

angels I loved having the name all organised before DS was born it drove my sister mad with the guessing what it was . Also as people have said before they all look like Winston Churchill when they're born so you don't necessarily want to go with the 'see what name they look like' theory

Malcolm is a difficult name to imagine a baby as BUT it is unusual for babies now and spellable - two of my top criteria... Also babies grow into their names - and I know a few Malcolms who have been Malc who have been quite cool.... Peter is a good name - although you would get lots of Peter Rabbit themed presents

OP posts:
KnitterNotTwitter · 21/07/2010 11:16

Chloe sorry - my point was that the cat was called Arthur and everyone always thought it was an unusual name for a cat - more of a person name IYSWAM!! And he was a fab cat - a proper tom cat who owned the neighbourhood

OP posts:
angels1 · 21/07/2010 11:20

yes knitter, Malc isn't as bad. I had only thought of shortening it to 'Mal' which I don't like - it reminds me of french 'je mal a la tete' (think mal means hurt or bad. hmmm!)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/07/2010 11:34

You can always just push for keeping it as a middle name. Our DCs get family names as middle names but their "own" names as first names.

Lulabel27 · 21/07/2010 13:31

This may be "outing" me but my fiances father is called Septimus.... He was the seventh son of the seventh son (yes really!) and now this will be his seventh grandchild so if its a boy its pretty much a done deal with that side of the family that the middle name will be Septimus.... At least I have choice of first name!!

I like Arthur! And I like Art too, I think these olders names are making a comeback!

As Professor says, couldn't you have Malcolm or Peter as a middle name?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/07/2010 13:42

If you're told you're having a boy, you work out a girl's name you like to have in reserve. Then if a girl pops out you have a name nicely lined up to present to a shellshocked DH as a fait accompli... (or vice versa for a boy's name if you're told you're having a girl, of course)

(I've had that as a backup plan both times, although never needed it)
