Good luck with your scan Kat we've taken DD to a couple of motor racing events and she had a great time it can be done! But of course you can use it as an excuse if you don't want to go and tell your DH that everyone on mumsnet said no

I seem to be getting rounder. 2 friends have said that I look a bit pregnant and now I've only got 2 pairs of trousers that fit. Time to locate and wash the maternity clothes, they're in the loft somewhere! I'm so surprised, I didn't show properly last time til I was nearly 20 weeks.

kat2504 · 11/07/2010 11:31

Thanks! it isn't just that I don't want to go. although I have zero interest. I'd just like him to start realising that our lives will have to change quite significantly. We don't live together yet so it's all going to be a huge shock to the system! But hey, he's got just over seven months to get used to it so i'm going to try not to go off on one at him!

pipsicles · 11/07/2010 12:53

Morning all (actually it's afternoon now - still in my pjs )

I'm really glad to be hearing so much good news over the last couple of days - congrats on twins and scans!

I've not posted for ages, mainly because by the time I've read through everything, I'm to tired to string a sentence together - we are all so chatty!!!

I've been finding the heat a bit of a struggle too, but found yesterday that sitting on a blanket chasing the shade(!) around the garden and doing pretty much nothing else seemed to work pretty well!

My symptoms seem to be easing loads - the sickness only lasted about a week and now even the nausea is fading away. I realise that I must be one of the lucky ones - sorry to those of you that are still suffering. It does still make me worry a bit about m/cing, but then some little symptom or other steps in to reassure me! I keep thinking that every day that goes past takes us one day closer to the 3 month mark!

So. Some of you have got me wanting to try knitting! I think I want to do a patchwork blanket too, but not sure what colours - we're not finding out the sex and I want to get started NOW! (I'm so impatient when I've decided I want to do something!) Where do we go to get these things? The only place I can think of is hobbycraft, but if any of you can advise me of somewhere cheaper before about 2.30pm today, then that would be great!

Hope you're all having a great day.

tabbycat76 · 11/07/2010 13:03

Funny that you should be discussing stuff your partners want to do next year like going to Formula 1! In our case it's me that's saying stuff like that!! Oops! Maybe I just think kids should work around you and not you working around them! I've always thought wherever I go, either to drive to see friends for the day or to go out for a day somewhere, they'd come with me.... perhaps with two in tow it might be a bit different! And plus who's going to want to offer to babysit two babies to give us the opportunity to go out!!!???!

cordiality so funny re your comments about your husband at the scan! Think you're right tho, I think men (and to some extent us) don't actually believe it's happening until you see heart beats etc! It's an amazing feeling isn't it! We'll be 8 weeks tomorrow and my tummy is certainly getting rounder. Plus my jeans are getting tight so off to the shops soon for some new clothes me thinks!

This morning I've woken up feeling not so bad. I seem to be having good days and bad days instead of all bad and nauseous days so I must be improving. I hope so anyway!

Hope you all are feeling ok and have a great Sunday guys!

Tarlia · 11/07/2010 14:05

Thanks for that knitta I can't work it out at all so I'm going to do rectangle patchwork

pip I'm doing mine lots of pastle colours, including pink and blue as we will not be finding out the sex. I did want to do bright colours but the hobby shop I went to only had pastel cotton wools. Have you knitted before? I did about 15 years ago but forgot how so taught myself on Friday through the Internet.

How are you all today?

pipsicles · 11/07/2010 14:09

Tarlia like you, I've not knitted since I was a child, when I would start off with something about 20 stitches wide, and end up with 5! DH suggested we had a blanket with a head end and a foot end if I'm still as good as that!!! Have you found it easy enough to pick up? I was thinking different colours too, but a little research is showing me that 'baby-friendly' wools don't appear to come in bright colours. Might have to do lots of pastels - I can get a white blanket from anywhere!

sweetnitanitro · 11/07/2010 14:40

tabby didn't know you were a petrolhead too good race today wasn't it? Thought Alonso's penalty was a bit harsh though.

Newborns are fairly portable, it's when they get to toddler-hood that it gets a bit trickier because they can protest at being dragged to things they don't want to do. Fortunately DD seems to like most of the things we take her too (her first word was 'car').

Evenings are definitely trickier, I didn't get to go to the pub quiz with my friends until DD was about 4 months. This time though I'm thinking about just sticking the baby in the sling and going anyway. Would that be really wrong? It's in a club rather than a pub so it's fairly civilised. What's the MN verdict?

tabbycat76 · 11/07/2010 15:13

sweetnitranito I don't think it's wrong to take your babe to the pub quiz, esp if it's in a club! Personally I don't see a problem with it tho i guess other people there might not appreciate a crying baby in their ears! I'd say sod 'em and as you say put baby in a sling and then at least it'll be comforted by being near you - it'd make feeding easier too if you were planning on breast feeding!

Hmm wouldn't necessarily say I was a petrol head as such! ;) I enjoy sports and love the atmosphere it creates! My best mate goes to Formula 1 races with her bf and loves it so it's kinda got me reigniting an interest from childhood! We'll go next year I'm sure, with or without the twins! Fab race - plenty of excitement, concluded by Webbers winning comments! haha

Now could I reignite a like for knitting?!? Possibley. My MIL has asked if we'd mind her knitting some cardigans for our babes so heck, why not! I was never any good at it but hats off you tarlia for teaching yourself! Impressive! Maybe I'll stick to my cross stitch... which reminds me, maybe I'll have to research some twin birth samplers! Ok, getting excited at the thought so off I pop to search the web! See ya'll later! x

knittakid · 11/07/2010 16:37

Has anybody been to the early preg. unit? I'm going tomorrow morning becasue of the bleeding on fri and sat. I'd just like to know what they might do, or what should I deff. ask to have done.
Xx

starbuck05 · 11/07/2010 16:56

Hi Knittakid, I have not actually been myself so am a rubbish person to answer this but know some people who work in one - you will need a fullish bladder as they will definitely do a scan, it will more than likely be an internal one (transvaginal) so just prepare yourself for that. It is apparently not painful at all, and much much less uncomfortable than a smear.
If they can't see anything they sometimes get you to come back, or they sometimes do blood tests over several days to see if your b-HCG levels are rising.
I don't know if that helps at all, I really hope all goes okay x

knittakid · 11/07/2010 17:16

Thanks startbuck05, I kind of hoped they'd do a scan, and I've had that before, when they were checking on my coil, which was apparently moving.
Really just want to know, so whatever they have to do that's fine by me!

ledkr · 11/07/2010 17:39

Blimey knita and angels. I go away camoing for 2 nights and this is waht happens. What a crappy few days you both had. I was reading throught the threads with hammering heartbeat then grinned when i read you were both fine.I think the non preg days are normal i am having a slight one today and am just enjoying it tbh.Camping was great apart from the people opposite us who decided to have their own global gathering until 2am. I would normally have said something(firey old bird)but thought in my current condition it was a bit risky. So instead i opted for the use of foam ear plugs which pretty much cancell out all noise and went to sleep with my hands over poor dd ears. DH awake all night (good practice) and reported to me that it had all kicked off during the night when a fight nearly broke out between a guy whos kids had been woken up and the ravers so only thing with the ear plugs is you miss the action.Other point is that i am looking so far gone now its ridiculous. Belly is round and hard and nothing fits me. I actually bought two pairs of mat trousers sat form new look sale only 5 each. The problem now is that my dd doesnt know and i dont want to tell her until after my ds screening on 28th but today she has stared at my tummy a lot and she asked me when i am re joining weight watchers..i was horrified.I have had 4 dc and i can honestly say i have never been this big so early. It happened to my friend but she slowed down after 4 months. Scan tues and i really hope its not twins..really hope!!

earlgreyismynectar · 11/07/2010 19:50

Welcome cordiality & congratulations!

I hope you can get some answers and reassurance from your scan tomorrow knittakid good luck with it all and likewise to you ledkr look forward to hearing if it's multiples!! We are due some more on here! Is it you who has a DD of 8? My DD is approaching 4 and I sometimes wonder how I will be returning to all the baby stuff again! You know when you have got through every milestone first time around it's a bit of a thought! I'm sure I'll have forgotten it all though it won't take a lot to get back into the flow again! Like you, I'm relieved that DD is that bit older and less reliant on me as I've been feeling just awful again and incapable of much at all! I'd love to hear from any other mums with older DC's about returning to it again! DD is v excited (when she remembers) and I have to say I'm excited at the idea of her becoming a big sister! Glad you got your all important sleep on the camping trip! Those foamy ear plugs work wonders! I even took some to T in The Park one year! So much for partying!!

I've had a day of doing pretty much nothing then had a major meltdown over OH giving away an all-important big box ready for us packing to move to our neighbours who'd clocked it (who are also moving). Oh dear, who would have thought a box could cause such wrath, I'm very hormonal, feels like permanent PMT. Anyone else?? (please!)... kat I sympathise, it takes them a while and I too was in a v similar situation first tome around with it all as we weren't living together then etc. It's a huge learning curve especially for them! I think the scan will make it real for him. You could also get him one of these pregnancy books for blokes, there are prob quite a few now, very much written in their language! As you say, seven months to get used to the idea!

"knitter" was it you who said you could feel the baby moving despite it being so early? I have felt flutterings just the past 2 weeks which I would ordinarilly put down to wind! But I'm wondering now?!

Have a pleasant Sunday evening all, whether with or without the World Cup!!

TallulahBelly14 · 11/07/2010 20:00

Hi cordiality - I'm in NW London as well, but two weeks ahead of you. That's so funny - the day I had my scan I was told I was 8+1 as well, but the baby was 16.9mm - maybe that explains why I look permanently bloated!?

And does anyone on here crochet? I never learnt to knit as it was too complicated, but was thinking of attempting to crochet a blanket - any nice (and basic!) patterns would be more than welcome...

brockleyD · 11/07/2010 20:11

Hi Tallulah,

I crochet, much prefer it to knitting, I love all the squares you can make. If I was you I would do something really simple like a massive granny square rather than joining small squares as that is much more complicated. You will need someone to show you the basics or to go to a class, much easier to learn that way. But then once you understand the basic principles its easy!

That is brilliant you are so far ahead, I went for my 8 week scan on Friday and embryo only 11.8 mm, he said that was normal for 7.5 days but I can't stop thinking it sounds a bit small after hearing others at 8 weeks have been 15mm or so. But I am quite small and haven't been able to eat as much as normal since being pregnant, I seem to get hungry a lot but it makes me feel a bit sick to eat most things, rubbish!

Good luck with the crochet!

TallulahBelly14 · 11/07/2010 20:12

I inadvertently had another scan at 10w this week (my kidneys were being checked), and the ultrasound lady let me have a quick look at the baby while she was down there.

I see what you mean about the fluttering, Knitter - he / she was wriggling around like nobody's business! And there was such a difference in size and proportion since the 8 week scan - they grow up so fast!

brockleyD · 11/07/2010 20:15

Hi Knitakid,

Just to let you know I have been to early preg unit before several times. They will test your blood, blood pressure prop and give your a scan, prop internal but I have had two of these and absolutely fine. They put a condom on it and its shaped much like what you normally put a condom on!!!! I didn't even notice it once it was in there just a bit cold because they put some lub on it.

Good luck, get there early if you can as normally its first come, first served unless you have an appointment at your unit. Otherwise be prepared to be there a couple of hours at least.

ledkr · 11/07/2010 20:23

yes e grey dd is 8 but when she was born her brothers were 19 17 and 12 they were accidentally there for the birth too and are amazing with her. I got divorced when she was tiny and they took over while i worked or went out or shopping i am so proud of them for that. This baby is with new dh and dd has been begging for a baby sis or bro but at 43 i thought the chances were slim.Starting again was fine. Great fun and so much more confident.I am already planning a very no nonsense approach with this one and am, buying everything second hand but always had new before. It all comes back to you and other kids are great just to run and get a nappy or whatever. Not telling dd untill i have had all clear from downs screening but as i said its geting harder i think she thinks shes getting a fat Mum.

earlgreyismynectar · 11/07/2010 20:48

That is just lovely to hear! I have a couple of friends with greater age gaps between their kids and they have said exactly the same that their older DC's are amazing with the new baby! Also the help factor will be helpful! She is very keen to get involved! She's going to love being big sister! I'm undecided whether I will go for a DS test, are you thinking amnio? I'm older too at 39 and will see what the results of my bloods are and take advice, I expect I would though if a risk were shown. This was one of my reasons for hoping to hold off on announcing to work and many friends till 20 weeks though I'm not sure whether I'm legally entitled to tell them before that? Anyway, at the rate I'm expanding it's a no- go anyway! I too haven't told DD directly and it isn't staying in her head luckilly! She announced the other night "mummy you have big boobs" I said I know, then she said "you have a big tummy too" then the sudden memory of previous chats flashed across her face and she gasped "mummy have you got a baby growing in your tummy"?! I am looking forward to it all being out in the open. I too feel I will be much more relaxed this time around and I'm completely with you on going for second hand equipment where needed and I absolutely wouldn't have considered it with DD! It all had to be new! I'm pleased for you Ledkr and your chance to have a new baby in your family! I'm always extremely inspired by stories of older mums!

I'm inspired by the crochet idea brockley I have a half knitted hat for DD from about 2 years ago which I will get back to and finish (though I doubt she would wear it now!) but crochet may be better for me? I have a friend who does it brilliantly and sells her mad looking woodland creatures on Etsy! I will see if she can give me a starter!

ledkr · 11/07/2010 20:58

earl grey i am off to foetal medicine centre on 28th to have nuchal fold and bloods done then cvs if it comes back high. The Dr doing it is a pioneer of the tests so i fell i am in good hands. Dont ask me why but i have been obsessing about ds since found out im was preg which i inccidentally thought was the onset of the menopause. Only did test at Drs request cos was going to have an mri for back pain.As far as being laid back it was funny when i saw mw and she was telling me what to do and not to do then she saw the look on my face and started laughing saying you will do what you want wont you.I have not drank but was very drunk one night before i knew or had even missed a period.I still have a coffee tho and ride my bike everywhere.I told work early cos new department and i had terrible cramping at the beginging and thought i was going to have to go off sick i think you have to tell at some point but ok for now. Work is actually the one place that i can let my tummy out so its quite nice.

earlgreyismynectar · 11/07/2010 21:42

Heehee! Lol at you thinking it was the onset of the menopause! What an amazing surprise that must've been! Nice one too not giving up on the coffee, I'm still on tea and my new discovery of Cola and know I would be much unhappier for not having it! I've heard a lot on here about the FMC, great you have access to that, must be very reassuring. I have no idea yet what facilities / services are available here where I live for this sort of thing, it wasn't an issue last time. Time will tell. Enjoy seeing your baby and strong little heartbeat on Tues!

ledkr · 11/07/2010 22:21

thanks. hope so. I am paying to see the prof.can't spell his name. and travelling over 100 miles to see him. my local hospital don't even do nucal on nhs even for oldies and it costs more and is less detailed. so we are off to London on our holiday money! worth it tho. can't wait to tell dd when all clear. what a nice start to her summer hols.

KnitterNotTwitter · 11/07/2010 22:43

Tabbycat?.oooh twins, congratulations. In honour I?ve started a new column in my spreadsheet the ?actual sex? column ? even though you don?t know the sex you do know it?s twins?.

Welcome zerominuszero

angels - so pleased your scan was good news

knittakid - really pleased your test confirmed things

tarlia - if you cast on 50 stitches and then knit about 10 rows. Then measure how wide your knitting is and then knit more rows until your knitting is that high you?ll have a square ? with minimal mathematical calculations!! And then remember that number of rows up for your next square ? assuming you?re using the same wool in a different colour rather than a totally different wool ? it might look funny if you used a totally different wool by the way? suggest you go for the same brand/yarn in a number of different colourways!

Sweetnitanitro re pub quiz ? you might need to check the venue ? we took DS to a pub/club when he was about 6 weeks old and we got turned away because he was under 18?.!

I feel so huge today! My stomach is enormous and hard and I look way more than 9 weeks! The 90 degree heat is getting a bit tiring too!

Went to watch the World Cup Final in a Portuguese cafe downtown and there was a really good atmosphere. Never thought I'd see that in America. Came home for extra time though as it was standing room only and the dcs were getting a little bored! Going back down for the summer festival - hoping the bouncy castles are still up! Not for me, obviously but you can't keep toddlers off them, can you?

Good luck with the early pregnancy unit knittakid.

if you go to a local library tallulahbelly they should have some books with step by step and simple patterns. Thats how i taught myself.
Got my scan date through for the 10th august seems so far away. All this talk of twins has made me nervous as twins run in the maternal line of my family (moms a twin and my nans a twin) plus dh has been winding me up because when i lie down my tummy really sticks out. With ds couldn't tell i was pregnant till 4 1/2 months. Plus i have been so sick and tired that it feels like i have extreme jet lag and food poisening. Can only eat chinese food without throwing up which won't be good as i have got 2 fit in to a bridesmaids dress in 20days starting to panic a little as there is only so much a pair of spanx pants can do.
