From the stats we have, I have calculated that the average birth weight of babies on this thread so far is 7lb 9.5oz....for what it's worth!!

greensnail · 07/07/2010 14:36

Thanks for your advice, Alice is now happily snoozing in her new newborn-to-toddler rocker and I have two hands free for typing . We've had a much happier morning overall, mostly due to copious snacks and soft play for DD1.

Madamefreckle Alice has also had about 6 baths in 6 weeks and she smells gorgeous too. Newborns don't really do anything to get dirty anyway do they?

GibberingGinger · 07/07/2010 16:36

Things very hectic here, but in brief, asked for a second opinion regarding James tongue tie (was originally told (NHS tayside) it was very fibrous and vascular and they wouldn't cut it unless under general anaesthetic as it would bleed so much and to wait until 6 months) but its really effecting his feeding. So went yesterday for another opinion (NHS fife) and they cut it there and then. And Douglas' tongue tie too. WAs very pleased. However when the orthodontist was looking at James she said, you do realise he has a cleft palate don't you? Erm No . In hindsight its obvious, and DH had commented that he didn't have a dangly bit in his throat, and you could see an awful lot of his throat. But I'm annoyed its been missed. It explains so much of his poor feeding and vomiting out of his nose, which I've asked about but was told was normal. It's a very minor cleft, but enough to make a hole between the roof of his mouth and nose. Anyway more referals and hospital appointments coming up!

Babies crying so better go - congratuations to new arrivals. Any more to come or can we move to post natal?

My goodness GG how awful that that was missed. You must be furious, but at least it's been picked up now and can hopefully be treated.

Thanks to everyone for your brilliant winding advice, what a wonderful thing MN is to have all that advice to hand like that. James is so much more settled now using mostly the sitting up and supporting his chin position. He's gaining weight like nobody's business (gone up from 50th centile at birth to 75th today aged 11 days) so we must be doing something right! I expressed for the first time today so DH can try feeding him from a bottle tonight and let me get a bit more sleep - cannot wait!

Hope everyone else is doing well, bumps and babies.

Oh goodname I'm in Newport.

Very interesting list of foods to avoid earlyone! i am going to have to try dairy free again sadly.

Jeremy had a heart murmur confirmed today, so we now have to wait for an appt for an echo of his heart at the specialist unit at Harefield.

at them not noticing a cleft palette ginger! What implications will this have for him?

roundabout1 · 07/07/2010 21:40

early one morning - we had a similar day no sleep all day & then overstimulated & overtired on monday. I had been pigging on strawberries sat & sunday so I may try cutting them out. Shame as I adore grapes & strawberries.
csws - sorry to hear about the murmur, hope you get that appointment soon
ginger - am also shocked on your behalf about the cleft palate being missed especially after you had said about his feeding problems.
filly - very impressed about your organisation & having a routine at this early stage, am seriously in awe of you!!
Amuch more peaceful day here in roundabout household, ama bit worried I will be paying for it tonight, seems a bit too good to be true!

NizzyNoodles · 07/07/2010 21:58

Congratulations to all the new arrivals since I last posted - I haven't really had time to keep track!

Sam is doing well - learning to survive all the cuddles from his sisters. The odd bit of projectile vomiting when I forget to wind him properly but apart from that he's quite laid back - so far! (I hope I haven't jinxed it saying that!!). He's not put on the weight he lost initially yet but that's similar to his sisters so I'm not too worried about that. He likes his rocker too - although ours doesn't vibrate! The next challenge is to work out the logistics of dropping DD1 at playgroup - I don't know which combo of buggy/sling/walking will work best for DD2 and Sam - so that I can have a trial run while DH is off work and I'm ready for next week when I need to do it by myself.

CSWS Thanks for the updated list - although a bit mortified to see how much bigger Sam was than all the other babies! Sorry to hear about Jeremy's heart murmur - hope it's something that can be sorted out?

Sending labour vibes to anyone still waiting and peaceful baby thoughts to all the little ones.

AlwaysHopeful · 08/07/2010 12:33

minimoo yes, my DD had reflux until she was weaned. What can I tell you? Reflux babies cry a lot and are sick a lot,so create stressed parents and a LOT of laundry!

DD loved her dummy - it seemed to soothe her, but in hindsight, I'm not sure if it didn't contribute to the feeding issues overall.

Are you breast or bottle feeding? I breast fed exclusively for the first two months and then phased out very slowly to bottle until she was completely on the bottle by the time she was 3 months. I did try expressing, but it all got too much for me and I was tipping towards PND, so I gave up. Bottle feeding was much easier because she could be more upright while she drank. Lying on her side, no matter how much I tried to keep her semi-upright, just caused her agony while breast feeding. This meant that she didn't feed as much as she should have done, reducing my milk supply, especially on my right side which seemed to cause her more pain, and she was very slow to put on weight. When we went to the bottle, she quickly shot back up to the average weight line after having dropped down to the second centile.

We were prescribed Gaviscon for her when she was 4 weeks old, which I needed to mix with water and give to DD with a syringe. She pretty much hated that too and screamed often. Again, it's easier with a bottle, becasue you just empty the sachet into the formula. SMA was better at staying down than the Aptimil. Also, be wary of the SMA specifically for reflux if you do go with formula, as we saw some very bad reviews of it online and the paediatrician wasn't too keen on it either.

Is any of that helpful? Very willing to be of more assistance if I can. Best wishes, I kknow it's tough.

Elena67 · 08/07/2010 15:50

HI just to let you know that we had a little boy, as yet still unnamed, on 28 June. 9lb, 5oz, more details later - he kept us waiting and it wasn't quite as straightforward as hoped but he is perfect and gorgeous and taking all our time up in doting.

fillybuster · 08/07/2010 16:35

Congrats Elena and ThePerfectBaguette...must admit I'm very impressed at the upbeat way in which you told your rather nightmare-ish birth story TPB, glad you're recovering well from what sounds like a fairly tough experience

Nizzy, be proud: Sam has brought up the collective average weight single-handed!!

And could you please explain MadameFreckle how on earth you had time to work out those stats anyway??!!

I started expressing on Saturday and its such a relief not to be doing the 11pm feed now...partly cos I get to go to bed before 12.30 and mainly also because I can now drink wine with dinner. God I've missed that We're having a better day here today - Mia has actually had a few burps and even consented to lie on a playmat for 10 minutes this afternoon, so I'm feeling a fairly huge amount of relief! We also had a good night, probably because she was so knocked out from the feeding/crying cycle yesterday, so she ended up going from the 11pm ebm feed until 5.30am before her next one ! There was a fair bit of settling required between those 2 times, but she simply wasn't asking for a feed, so I got to doze/sleep for a relatively continuous period....shame it won't happen again for another 8-10 weeks or so!!!!

We've been lent a vibrating bouncy chair but it doesn't work - I must ask DH to check out the battery situation tonight as Mia might quite like that...thanks for the tip

Whoever was impressed by a semblance of routine in the filly household, please don't be - a) we have little choice with 3 dcs (and are resorting to copious amounts of bribery and blackmail with DS and DD1 right now!) and b) I still have my nanny to help with the 2 older dcs until 6.30pm at the moment - I am under no illusion that its all going to become a hell of a lot more challenging when my maternity pay ends and I'm doing it on my own for the rest of the year!!!

Right off to do the 4.30pm feed - I'm feeling really sticky and muggy and wish the weather would either cool down or be nice...its been really grey and sticky all week now.

PS Dirty babies? You betcha, in between the explosive mustard poos and occasional vomiting session Luckily Mia likes her bath before bed and its pretty quick to dunk her in the sink in her room

Ilovemyterrier · 08/07/2010 16:38

Jeppe Sebastian Fagerlund born on 29th June 2010, 3360g 53cm.
Spent the first few days of life in SCBU as was very poorly from swallowing meconium but am glad to report that we are now both home.
Congratulations to all, have not had a chance to catch up on everyone's arrivals but will look back over the next few days.

imkeepingmum · 08/07/2010 17:13

just catching up on thread, also have windy/colicy baby which isn't much fun so glad to hear others in the same boat and the tipson walking up and down stairs!

Rather tired...zzzzz

goodname · 08/07/2010 18:05

Sorry to hear about the cleft palate GG but at least you should notice an improvement in feeding when it is fixed. Also sorry to hear about the heart murmer CSWS and hope it is sorted out really soon.
Just needed to post about my Amby hammock (natures nest to give it its full name). It is absolutely amazing! I was quite cynical and really did not think it would improve the situation much but it has transformed it. Fergus would previously only sleep in with us and had to be rocked/fed/walked to sleep. Have had this bed 2 nights and the first he slept half the night in it and settled himself to sleep in it (with some rocking from me). No crying at all!. Then yesterday he had 2 naps in it, one he put himself to sleep. Last night he went in at 12 (after the colick hours were over) and slept til 4 (quite a feat) and then had a feed, a burp and was straight back in his bed and went to sleep no bother at all. It usually takes 1 1/2 hours to settle him down again in the night, this was about 20! He then slept til 8 and woke up really contented and has been a happy baby all day, had two naps in it and just out him in wide awake and he went down to sleep all on his own while I pottered around the bedroom. He does need his dummy to fall asleep though and some rocking if he stirs while he is asleep but it is such a huge huge difference from trying to get him to sleep anywhere else!
Other good thing is it seems to help his wind/pooing ability, dont know how but he seems to like pooing in there
really hope this continues

fillybuster · 08/07/2010 18:36

Oh dear...I keep forgetting the important things...

CSWS - when do you get to find out more about the murmur? Do you know what it means? Hope you're coping ok, I'm sure you don't need extra stuff to worry about right now?

GG, I was absolutely gobsmacked when I read that the hospital had missed the cleft palate ...I assume both twins were thoroughly checked by a paed before you were discharged from hospital? Have you reported this to them?

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2010 18:40

Congratulations elena and ilovemy.

We have an amby goodname. Didn't have it for dd, but bought it for ds1 when he would only sleep on us. He wouldn't sleep in it at all - grr. Refused to sleep unless on his tummy, which of course you can't do in an amby. Have been trying it at night with ds2, but so far he won't sleep unless on us either! My moniker is well deserved believe me!

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2010 18:44

Filly - we should hear from harefield re scan within a week or so I believe. I found this page quite helpful, and it's helping me not to panic at the moment.

LaTrucha · 08/07/2010 19:21

Hi all,

i'm sorry to hear about the cleft palette GG. I hope it gets resolved soon.

CSWS - I hope Jeremy's heart murmur is like DD's was and disappears without any trouble.

I have been reading avidly all your stories and advice. We've been in the hospital for the last few days as Daniel got an infection in the skin around his cord. Apparently, it's impossible to tell how he got it. Yesterday, it looked like it was spreading but he's ben on IV antibiotics and they seem to have done the trick. We've been released from hsopital and are very glad to be home. Poor DD felt the separation the most.

He's been quite well in himself and is currently doing my impression of a dream baby. Eating loads, sleeping loads, periods of awakeness and crying only to get himself noticed. He does block feeding for ours on end, but also sleeps pretty well. I would be able to settle him in his moses baslet all the night if I had the patience, but I usually end up with him next to me at about 5am. I can't believe it's going to last long but at the moment, he's a total charmer out for his mother's heart.

LaTrucha · 08/07/2010 19:48

Oh, and BTW had my breast scan today and everything is normal

goodname · 09/07/2010 13:53

oh dear CSWS that sounds pretty tough, hope you have people around to help you cope with what musy be major sleep derpivation.

Glad to hear you are home from hospital La T and your baby sounds perfect as well as looking super cute. lucky you.

Hows everyone else coping with their sleep deprivation and when does it get better? ever?

dinosaurinmybelly · 09/07/2010 14:26

Hello - Zoe will be 5 weeks tomorrow and the feeding is going well but I think the pregnancy hormones have deserted me as I am feeling more knackered than I did at the beginning, even though she is now needs feeding only 2 - 3 times between 9pm and 7am.

I'm adjusting to managing 3 little ones slowly. In truth it isn't as bad as I thought it would be, and Zoe spends alot of time in her ergo baby carrier which is very comfy with the infant insert inside, and she doesn't seem to mind getting hot and sticky in there in this weather. She has just slotted into the boy's bedtime routine. I bath her in a little chair in the bath just before I bath the boys and she has been happy to stretch out in her cot after being dryed off and massaged, just in time for me to do bath and teeth with the boys. Then we all have stories together while I feed her.

I'm thinking of starting to express this weekend so that she can take a bottle from her Dad some evenings and I can catch up on sleep. Is there a good time to express and how much should I take at this stage? Filly - you sound like you have a good routine on the expressing. What do you recommend?

Sorry to hear about the heart murmur CSWS It must have been very worrying at first, but I'm happy you've had some info that has made you feel more at ease. I have a heart murmur that wasn't detected until I was in my 20s, and it hasn't bothered me at all - only adjustment I now have is that I need to take medication if I have a procedure when I am likely to have bleeding e.g getting a tooth out at the dentist.

LaT - why were you having a breast scan? Have I missed some news? Hope all OK. I've only been skimming this page over the last week or so, as I never seem to get a minute. It does settle down from experience though goodname so hang in there - it gets better with every week that passes.

Love to all those also up in the night feeding, as well as those still waiting to meet their little ones...

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/07/2010 16:50

Great news re your scan LaT .

goodname - it gets better about the time you decide to have another .
Actually ds2 had a better night last night after 4 hours of cluster feeding first. Even managed a couple of hours in the amby, which was great. There is hope yet!! In fact he is already the best sleeper I've had, despite not being actually good at it .

CSWS thats great he managed a couple of hours in the amby. Its taken 6 weeks to get Fergus to sleep anywhere but on or between us for more than 1/2 an hour so your doing great.
