Congrats to all the babies born recently - I am also getting behind posting.

I really feel for those of you still waiting, especially in this heat, it can't be much fun at all.

I'm struggling bfeeding at the mo. We both have thrush & Lauren just can't seem to latch on properly, she just wants to suck on the end of the nipple. We were doing so well to begin with, could do pretty much any position it's a bit disheartening & painful! Got cream & drops for Lauren & hv will set up a visit from bfeeding counssellor if it doesn't improve by next week but at the moment next week seems a long way away.

MrsDmamee · 02/07/2010 19:54

Baby girl Elyssa,8lb 5oz born 3 days early..last saturday.

still recovering after failed vbac.

congrats to all other new mommies.

JoKettle · 02/07/2010 20:41

Congratulations bluesnowfalcon and mrsDmamee on your new babies!

James & I have had a difficult couple of days where he won't sleep at all during the day - not necessarily crying at first but just won't drop off after a feed. Then he gets over tired and distressed, and in this heat he just feels roasting when he's roaring which makes him (and me!) feel worse. Overnight he seems better. Today I think I've figured out that I'm not winding him properly so have been concentrating on that and so far he seems much more settled. Does anyone have any advice about best positions for winding? And how long should you keep trying if nothing's coming up?

Good luck to those still waiting

GibberingGinger · 02/07/2010 21:15

Congratulations on all the new arrivals! Sorry I haven't got the brain capacity to mention you all seperately severe sleep deprivation here!

JoKettle, I have much sympathy (and was it fillybuster who was also suffering - I can't rememeber) with winding babies. It seems to have taken over my life! I've been told various positions - all of which aim to keep the back and neck in a straight line, so that the air can come up and not get stuck cause their throat is kinked (gets easier once they have neck muscles!) I use a whole mixture of positions as sometimes changing from one to the other shifts the wind. Baby over my shoulder with firm strokes upwards, Sometimes firm pats on the back (though this can cause heartburn in some babies by bumping the stomach acid into their throat so beware!) Or baby sitting on your knee with left hand around baby's chest, thumb and forefinger supporting neck, and other 3 fingers under baby's arm trying to keep baby upright (again aiming to keep a straight line from tummy to mouth to let wind escape), with cirular motions on baby back with right hand. Also in this position try tipping baby back into lying position and upright several times to shift it.
Or try lying them on their back and cycling their legs. Often changing their nappy for some reason will make them burp when they are lifted afterwards. Old wives say a change of hands helps - ie give baby to someone else to try and burp!

Turned into a massive post - sorry. Hope everyone is doing well. Can't believe my boys are 5 weeks. Had six weeks check today (a little early) but at least I can drive again now!

Baby Boy Timothy Daniel born 1st of July, weighing 8lb 11oz. All well. Story to come. All here chaotic as DH has V&D bug!

Sorry to hear that MrsDmamee. I can understand how that feels. Nearly happened here too but managed to escape at the last minute.

Will catch up soon.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/07/2010 21:31

You traitors - I am going to be the last on here aren't I?!

Congratulations though to LaT and MrsDmamee.

For winding, hold upright and over your shoulder a little and walk up stairs - was by far the best way we found with dd.

roundabout - not completely sure from your post whether both you and Lauren are being treated for the thrush, but do make sure that you are, as otherwise you will just keep on passing it backwards and forwards between the two of you.

Summerhols · 03/07/2010 04:46

Congrats on new arrivals.

Just wanted to send out my sympathy and solidarity to roundabout1. I am also having a alwful time breast feeding. I have got Mastitus and have had a raging temp for the last 24 hours and very, very, very sore boobies. There have been moments when I have been inches away from going over to formular (still may do). So good luck with your medication and I would say see the counsellor whether things have got better or not. It has been the only thing (apart from antibiotics) that has properly helped - getting my latch right. The other thing I would strongly reconmend is talking to other women/friends who have been through the same thing - I have found the psychological impact just as difficult as the actual physical bit and talking it through makes you realise that you are not alone.

Sorry a bit of a long post!

Well off to manual extract milk, just what I want to be doing at 4.46 when baby is asleep

RubyReins · 03/07/2010 11:35

Hi ladies!

Luke Douglas was born on 29 June at 9.38am weighing 7lbs 14oz. Induced but only had the gel before he shot out 5 hours after my first pang. The midwives were wonderful and we were cherished on the recovery ward. I had heard horror stories about the hospital but I am being positively evangelical about our care.

He's just beautiful and we're thrilled.

Feeding is not going well as he's way too eager and has lacerated me Expressing and cup feeding until sore boobs have healed which given how hungry he is cannot come soon enough.

Congratulations to all the new families - I'll read through all the stories soon!

goodname · 03/07/2010 13:00

Jo kettle i have similar problems winding Fergus, he is very windy but can be hard to burp. If I dont burp him properly he will wake up screaching 10 minutes later. I agree with csws about the stairs and its a good idea to make this DHs job . Also the laying on back, lifting up and patting like Filly said is a good method but Fergus can get v agitated when I do this for some reason. Try lots of different positions if one is not working. I find it very useful to burp him during his feeds, maybe as much as every five minutes if he is gulping it down quickly rather than waiting to the end. What I really hate about winding him is that by the time I have managed it he is all awake instead of all full of milk and sleepy so then it takes longer to get him to sleep. Where about in Fife are you by the way. GG and I are both in Cupar.

Filly sorry for late response but if it antibiotics causing the problem, its a good idea for you to take probiotics. You can also get probiotic drops for the baby.
Congrats to all new arrivals BTW, sorry its very hard to post with a new baby who is constantly starving and windy!

LaTrucha · 03/07/2010 13:55

Blimey~! His name's not Timothy Daniel it's Daniel Timothy. Sorry.

Sorry to be a traitor CSWS. Looking forward to hearing all about you very soon.

Just snatching a minute before lying down. It's all go here!

greensnail · 03/07/2010 14:22

Congratulations LaT and RubyReins and at LaT for getting his name wrong! I made a similar error in DD1's baby book, so it will be there for her to see for ever!

I also use the walking downstairs trick for winding if nothing else is working. Passing her to DH is another favourite here, with DD1 he used to really like this job to feel involved - don't think he's so bothered this time around as there's always something for him to do with one or other of the girls!

Big sympathies on your DH being ill LaT. Do you have any other help nearby? My DH has been sick all week too, which is hard enough with having a 5 week old to look after, can only imagine what its like with a brand new baby.

madamefreckle · 03/07/2010 16:51

Congrats MrsD, RubyReins and LaT! Hope your DH is getting better. RubyReins - Hope you're able to breast-feed again soon. It has taken 2 weeks for my nipples to sort themselves out and finally it's not excruciating to feed. I don't think they can have been as bad as yours though, although they got horribly scabby, I kept feeding her and I don't want to think where the scabs ended up! [yeuch]

Barbeasty and any others who know, please could you tell me about safe co-sleeping. I'm finding that Emma ends up in bed with me most nights for most of the night and I'm never quite sure if we're doing it right. DH is in the other room, so no risk of him rolling on her. It's a bit of a pity really that we've taken ourselves off to another room but it does seem that everyone gets much more sleep this way. I try to move her away from me after feeding and put a separate small sheet over her, but quite often I just fall asleep feeding and this probably isn't the best idea.

I'm having a minor wobble about Emma's name - is it a bit dull? I had lots of names on our shortlist which were more 'interesting' and less popular. Emma wasn't even on our shortlist but DP suggested it soon after she was born and that was that for some reason. Any positive thoughts or comments about the name would be gratefully received! - I think it's too late to change our minds now!

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/07/2010 18:52

at LaT .
And I'll let you off for having him already, as don't think I'll be far behind you...

woofie · 03/07/2010 20:35

Right Congratulations to madamefreckle monkeymargot suzy1975 earlyonemorning sobloodystupid gaelicsheep fillybuster nizzynoodles summerhols barbeasty jokettle imkeepingmum mrsD bluesnowfalcon latrucha and rubyreins! Phew! It's been great Reading so many positive birth stories, tho usually while feeding, hence I haven't posted in ages.

CSWS - can we infer that things are moving? How exciting- perhaps you won't be last woman standing after all!

Loved the name confusion LaTrucha I was wondering what the Spanish version of Timothy was..

madameF - I really like Emma. It's a classic and not as popular now as it was for our generation. Having said that I think I liked Lucy best from your list. It's def not too late to change your mind if you're not sure though- even if she's already registered you have some leeway for changes.

Sympathy to those still waiting and to those struggling with feeding or lack of sleep. Feeding had been a bit of an uphill struggle for Laurie and I too, though I think we turned a corner this week with the help of LaT's invaluable advice over on the bf threads As several of the second timers have said though, I'm finding it a thousand times easier this time around, and in fact feeling a little broody for no 3 already! (dh would have a fit!)

looking forward to hearing news of the final arrivals x

woofie · 03/07/2010 20:43

Oh and madamef - we're co-sleeping with Laurie. I didn't even bother attempting a Moses basket remembering how many hours I frittered away trying to make ds1 sleep by himself in the early weeks. We swaddle Laurie tightly in a miracle blanket (which has to be my fav piece of newborn kit) and set him down between us on top our duvet with his head a fair distance down from the pillows. that seems to work really well for us, and smth must be working subconsciously while we sleep, because both dh and I seem to wake up in the same position we fell asleep in. I love waking up next to a cosy bundle of newborn

GibberingGinger · 03/07/2010 20:45

madamfreckle, Emma is a lovely name, it can't be mispronounced, it can't be misspelt, it's classic and doesn't date you to a specific decade (eg sharon and kimberly in the 70s). And to top it all its really pretty

CSWS, sounds like you think you are going to go soon, hope you get the labour you want. I wonder who will be the last to go on the thread?

Goodname - I've got an invite to baby massage on Monday 12th, are you in the same class?

OP posts:
Barbeasty · 03/07/2010 21:06

The way I was shown was to go as far from the edge of the bed myself, lying on my side. Put the arm that is underneath you above your head, into the recovery position and then rest your head on it. Curl your legs up. These will stop you rolling over.

Place the baby into your body, I was shown to do it on her side so she could breast feed whilst lying like this, making sure her feet can push against your legs and is all snuggled. Put your other arm over her and place your hand in the small of her back- this stops the baby rolling out of the bed!

As to covers, in hospital she just had my sheet on over her too. Since getting home she's been in a sleeping bag so I haven't covered her at all (and it's been warm enough not to have my duvet over my front.

Also, I think Emma is a really nice name, and not too boring.

greensnail · 03/07/2010 21:22

Good luck CSWS. (Sounds like she's in labour according to fb).

I also love the name Emma - definitely would have been a contender here if it went with our surname.

I cosleep in exactly the same way as barbeasty as this is what i was shown by midwife (or at least try to sleep like this - Alice likes to lie on her tummy which scares me!)

MrsDmamee · 03/07/2010 22:19

good luck csws

congrats LaT & rubyreins

I so wanted vbac to be sucessful if only for the recovery, but im not too bad today a week after 2nd em-cs. Starting to feel a bit more mobile.

BF has me exhausted though.

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/07/2010 01:44

just a quickie to say baby boy born 10.04pm sat night .
Name tomorrow once we're certain and have told family.

goodname · 04/07/2010 08:38

GG I have been invited to that class but have not decided whether to go yet as I don't have a car yet so not quite sure how i would get to stratheden and the HV says the next class will be back in Cupar at Westfield nursery when the schools go back. I might try and find a way to get to the Stratheden ones tho as aug seems quite a long way away. Also it would be nice to actually meet you if you are going
Hope all is going well for csws, seems like we are almost all done now. It seems strange that some people are still pregnant when I feel like Fergus has been here forever. I cannot imagine life without him. Imagine i used to be able to sleep through the whole night and even have a long lie. Seriously though apart from the sleeping, i wouldn't change a thing.
I like the name Emma too btw, it sounds nice to say iyswim.
Also on subject of co-sleeping I was not aware there was a correct sleeping position. I just plop him on his back or side next to me and move away as far as poss, praying he stays asleep. Somehow he always ends up snuggled right into to me when i wake up tho. He also most definately takes up more than his fair share of the bed as he likes to sleep with his wee arms outstretched. It looks so cute that I don't mind though.

georgee · 04/07/2010 09:35

Hi all

Sorry to post this so late after the birth but we're not all that long back from the hospital.

Anna Rose was born at 16.01 on Monday 28 June by emergency C-section weighing 7lb 15.5 oz. I went through 19 hours of labour before going into theatre. However, all is well and she's beautiful and we're very very happy. We were kept in hospital until Friday after which we had the whole clan come and visit for 24 hours!

Just to say that Emma was very far up our shortlist for a name ... I liked it for its classic/Jane Austen connotations. We chose Anna for similar reasons (although I suppose that would be Tolstoy rather than Austen!) - it just goes better with our surname I think.

We're co-sleeping too for now - useful to read all the advice, keep it coming. They allowed me to do it in hospital (breastfeeding on my side when needed) and I've just carried on. I do a version of the 'recovery position' thing.

Big big congratulations to everyone who's produced in the last week - it's been a busy few days! And good luck to the rest!

Georgee x

MonkeyMargot · 04/07/2010 13:38

wow - so many new babies!

Congrats to georgee, CSWS, madamefreckle, LaTrucha and rubyreins.

Not many left to pop now!

All well here - twins breastfeeding well and getting more sleep now. managed to family outings this weekend with all 5 of us - I'm getting to be very quick at getting everyone out the house - which is lovely as i didn't actually leave the house for over a week.

hope those with sore boobs/mastitis improve soon. Must be agony. Don't give up on BF if you can help it :-)

woofie · 04/07/2010 17:20

Congratulations CSWS and georgee!
