Congratulations on all the new babies. They are coming thick and fast now.

Always hopeful, what a horrible experience! Glad George is ok now.

Things going ok here. Tis pretty hectic. I can't imagine breast feeding them both - hats off to you Monkey Margot for managing it! Bottle feeding is hard enough. James is slowly getting there with his feeding but its still a struggle with only DH and I having the knack with his special bottle to actually get enough down him. My poor mum tried but didn't manage and its completely knocked her confidence about feeding him, though I'm sure she could do it with a little practice.

Best wishes to all those still pregnant in this heat - hope its not too miserable

gibbering glad feeding is improving. I am finding the boys keep nodding off whilst feeding in this heat - I have to perform various methods of cold water torture in order to rouse them.
I meant to say to you, there is a thread I'm on which you might want to peek at for twin mums - some lovely MNers on there.www.mumsnet.com/Talk/multiple_births/924346-Life-with-twins-come-in-and-make-me-feel-less

Summerhols · 28/06/2010 08:35

Morning all, well like I said I would be back asking for advice from you all soon...

I have posted this also in the BF forum:

My DD is only 4 days old. We have been really fortunate as she has fed really well and I think her latch has been good as I have not had much pain.

However yesterday/over night my milk has come in and I feel like my boobs are going to explode and feeding has gone from being OK to agony. Just in the space of 8 hours. She struggles to latch on and when she does it is constant pain, which means I tense up, probably upsetting her.

Is this normal and will it last (please God no!)? Is there anything that I can do the reduce the pain both when feeding and when not feeding? My DH thinks I should express some milk to take the pressure down, but I wonder wont this just tell my body to increase the supply?

Anyone with suggestions or just reassurance much appreciated.

MonkeyMargot · 28/06/2010 09:06

summerhols I would say definitely express a little of each bosom before each feed to make it easier for DD to latch on. Your supply will soon settle down - I don't think you need to worry about this at such an early stage.

NizzyNoodles · 28/06/2010 09:17

Summerhols - I'm having exactly the same today. My milk is coming in and everything has suddenly got more painful - will watch for responses with interest

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/06/2010 09:37

summerhols - just briefly as on phone at hospital appt, but hand express a little off before feeding (don't use pump) and stick cabbage leaves in your bra in between feeds.

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/06/2010 09:40

oh and hand expressing a little in a warm bath or shower can help to relieve things too between feeds.

greensnail · 28/06/2010 09:42

summerhols yes, express just enough before feeding to allow Lilly to latch on more easily. I remember this stage vividly with DD1 and I was so distressed by it all as your hormones tend to go a bit beserk at this point too. It will settle down really quickly so try not to worry. Make sure DH is looking after you and if the hormones are affecting you like they did me, then reassure him and yourself that you'll be feeling much more sane tomorrow!

myhandslooksoold · 28/06/2010 09:43

If anyone out there is still PG- so I am I!!!

I simply CANNOT believe I am still preganant after a show last week, thought it was all happening Saturday and still no baby. Bizarely I am beginning to think the likelihood of the baby being born is reducing not increasing. Having to stop myself unpacking the labour bag.

Beginning to feel like Queen Mary with her phantom pregancies!

Another sweep today fingers crossed.

LaTrucha · 28/06/2010 13:41

I concur with the expressing advice Summer hols. Do you know how to hand express? I'm sure there's a video out there somewhere if not.

Myhandslookold - yes. Totally and utterly pregnant here and morally convinced the baby is never coming out. TBH (and don't shoot me) I am no longer being sick (still feeling sick) and I seem to have sorted my back problem for the moment so in many ways these days are easier than ALL the rest of my entire pregnancy.

Stil desperate to have this baby though!

Good luck with sweep.

Due date Wednesday.

CSWS - in hospital????? GD monitoring or baby? Hoping it's the latter. Is DH back yet? You have managed the last couple of weks with remarkably little moaning in the absence of DH, I must say.

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/06/2010 13:59

Just routine clinc appt I'm afraid LaT! But they've agreed to leave me til at least 10 days over before they start fussing about induction, so that's a result with GD. I had a sweep too, although cervix still v long so not overly promising. Have reflexologist coming tonight, and phoning to try and book acupuncture plus a sweep with the community m/w on friday once they reopen after lunch in 2 mins!

theperfectbaguette · 28/06/2010 14:14

myhandslookold - I'm still pregnant too. Ten days over and not a twinge. Can't bear to check my e-mails as I know it's full of friends and family wanting to know what's happening despite me telling them that I'd lt them know. Got an appointment at the hospital with the doctor this afternoon where they'll do an internal and I'm assuming that we'll have a conversation about how much longer they'll leave it before doing a sweep. Last time she had a look (last Monday) my cervix was compleatly unripe - god I hate that word makes me feel like a melon.

DP starts a short term contract for a new company on Friday (he's been out of work for ages so it's quite a big deal) if it goes well then there's a chance they'll swing him more work so I really really want the baby to come before Friday - though I know that's not really a reason to induce.

Trying to keep active as much as possible but it's 35 degrees where I am, so going for walks any time after about 9am is just too much. Hhhhhmmmmmm

herewegrow · 28/06/2010 14:23

Still pregnant here too and overdue. lots of niggles for the last few days but nothing happening at all. Baby has probably decided it is cooler inside than out and so will stay put for a bit longer not actually sure why I'm smiling as it is getting quite tough now esp in the heat.

Right I'm going to find a shady spot in the garden and stuff and ice-cream.

greensnail · 28/06/2010 14:31

had HV here this am and Alice hasn't gained any weight since last week. Have started a thread here if anyone has any helpful advice

Summerhols · 28/06/2010 14:49

Thanks all for advice, I knew I could rely on MN!

greensnail, I think you are also right to point out the change in hormones as when DD is trying to latch on she ends up crying really hard which then makes me cry, which is silly as I know that crying is what babys do!

Of to dig out flannels and to have a go at hand expressing before next feed due (any minute now ).

LaTrucha · 28/06/2010 17:25

Greensnail - I've no experience of tandem feeding so nothing useful to say. It does sounda bit like Alice had a bug and that's why she didn't gain in the last few days. Have you got any RL support with BF?

CSWS - good that they've agreed to that.

I'm currently wondering whether to accept induction at 41 weeks, which brings a greater chance of c-section, or whether to tough it out until 42. I'm a bit worried about waiting as DD's placenta had declined by 38 weeks, and this one looks to be a big baby anyway. I have no idea of the risks of wating as compared to the risk of having to have c-section. Anyone got any idea?

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/06/2010 18:04

LaT - if you are concerned then ask to go for a CTG (where they strap a monitor on your tummy and produce a graph of the baby's heartbeat and movements) to check on the placenta. If it is breaking down then the baby won't be getting enough oxygen, and the heartbeat will be erratic. Is far simpler for them to do this than a full on induction, and if the results show some deterioration of the placenta then at least you can make your choice based on proper information .

LaTrucha · 28/06/2010 18:06

Interesting CSWS. Thanks.

JoKettle · 28/06/2010 18:18

A quick update to say that my son James Lennox arrived (10 days late) on Saturday 26th at 1am weighing 8lb 7oz. Quick 7 hour labour, TENS then gas & air then birthing pool where he was delivered. Small tear only, no stitches needed!
Can't praise the midwife unit at Ninewells highly enough, a really good experience.

I know I'm biased but he is totally gorgeous!

My milk has come in today as well Summerhols and it's blooming painful so I'm going to try hand expressing in a minute as well.

Good luck to all still waiting - and congrats to other new mums.

greensnail · 28/06/2010 21:20

Congratulations JoKettle and welcome to James Lennox.

LaT - I think you're right that I need some RL bf support. Feeding DD1 was always fairly straightforward so I never really needed much support, although I used to go to baby cafe with her anyway. I'm going to try to get there this week I think and get someone to check Alice's latch and have a chat with them about things - just a bit tricky with DD1 in tow. I think all those bfing mothers might be a bit overwhelming for her to see (we found her looking through my bra catalogue saying "yum-yum" to herself the other day ). Have been meaning to find out about local LLL meetings too, as I think that i'm more likely to find other tandem feeders or at least others feeding toddlers there, so I must get onto that too.

As well as the CTG they can do a doppler test to check the amount of blood flow between the baby and the placenta. I was having this done weekly as well as CTGs for the last few months of pregnancy to check Alice was getting what she needed, so might be worth you asking about this too.

LaTrucha · 28/06/2010 22:02

Greensnail - LOl at the idea of DD1 getting overwhelemd by so many boobies! my DD stopped bf at 19 months - almost a year ago (her decision). She still likes to put her head between them and make Mmmmm and kissing noises. Very embarrassing in public! Hope the baby cafe helps. IME toddlers are often there with their little babies in tow.

Interesting about the doppler. I'll ask about both those at next MW visit. I'll just try and get out of earshot of the consultant. I'm convinced they spend their evenings planning my next section!

Sunworshipper · 29/06/2010 10:52

Congratulations Filly and so glad to hear you finally had the birth you wanted with Mia. Congratulations Nowweare4, Suzy, Summerhols, Sobloodystupid, Nizzy and JoKettle - all these lovely babies with gorgeous names and doting mummies!

Sunshineday congratulations on finally bringing Faye home. Hope you are enjoying the sunshine days together.

Romola and I were struggling so much with the bf that I called in a lactation consultant last week who was absolutely brilliant and who diagnosed Romy with a tongue tie (it was the first thing I asked them to check after she was born) and it turns out she has a posterior tie so we are off to have it snipped this afternoon. I can ring the lactation consultant at any time and it is good to hear such reassuring advice esp at the witching hour of 11pm - 2am in the morning!! Fingers crossed she will be able to bf again and I can give the milk maids an afternoon off!

Hope the rain this morning and slightly cooler breeze is making it a little more comfortable for all you pregnant troopers.

Cadmum · 29/06/2010 11:13

Hello from sunny Phnom Penh.

Wow! Huge congratulations to those with new (and not so new) arrivals and labour vibes for those who are still waiting.

It is great to read all of the positive birth stories. The patiently waiting stories are also inspiring!

I cannot believe that it has been 5 months since my 'ordeal' leaving us with only one more before we can thing about ttc again. Still completely undecided and fluctuating from one extreme to the other.

Wishing you all the best with your little ones and upcoming labours.

GibberingGinger · 29/06/2010 13:25

Hi cadmum, great to hear from you. Hope life in Phnom Penh is going well. Best wishes with the decision about another mini cadmum, I hope everything works out whatever you decide!

Things very hectic here. Sleep deprivation is building up. Mum coming to help later this week again - thank heavens. Need more than 20 minutes sleep at a stretch!

Positive vibes to the pregnant ladies - not long now ( couldn't resist - feel free to punch me for uttering the forbidden phrase!)

Great to hear from you Cadmum. I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you and your family, good luck whatever you decide.

gibberingg glad you're getting some help from your mum. Amazed you're functioning at all with that little sleep.

Alice seems much better today, thank goodness and seems to be making up for lost time with her feeding, so hopefully the scales will hold some good news for us on friday
