Hi Everyone,

Can't believe I've missed so much! Just back
from Center Parcs yesterday where I had a lovely 'Mum to be' treatment in the spa - was worth every penny.

Had 28 wk appointment last week and MW thinks baby is breech at moment, so I've to go back at 32 wks to be rechecked - got a feeling baby has moved by the amount of quite uncomfortable movements I've been getting. Really find it sore when I get a dunt in my left side

skyeplusbump · 10/07/2010 22:24

hello everyone!
how are we all today?!
so i might be mad but we're going camping next weekend! (it's for a v.v good friends wedding!) anyone got any tips?! for me OR dd who is about to turn two?!

also has anyone had a 34 week scan before? how much should i expect to be able to see?someone said it might be to squished to make out much?!

31+6

whammie76 · 10/07/2010 22:49

skyeplusbump - I had a scan at 37 wks and I couldn't make a thing out, even with sonographer pointing out what was what to me. We didn't want to know the sex, but were told the baby was quite far down with head engaged and in the wrong position to make the sex out.

Good luck with the camping, sorry no advice to give except enjoy

cinnamongreyhound · 11/07/2010 10:14

skyeplusbump had one on Thursday when I was 32+2 and we could see quite a bit. As she was doing the measurements she showed us heart and I could recognise the spine, also saw his little feet. Didn't see any of his face but he is lying transverse at the top of my uterus so he's a bit squashed and wouldn't open legs so she couldn't confirm it was a boy. Did't see it for long as she just took a few measurements but she was lovely and DH could see a lot more than me as he was in a better position. Guess it gets harder and harder as they get bigger.

JodeyLea · 11/07/2010 10:47

skyeplusbump - I go camping evey year and wasn't going to let being 23 pregnant put me off when I last went during end of May Bank holiday half term. I did have to purchase a new air bed as didn't fancy being too low to the ground so we got aColeman Raised Quickbed, Queen* and I have to say it is amazing! It was so great that I'm going camping again on the 7th August for our 1st wedding anniversay when I'll be 33 weeks. Other airbeds have given me a stiff neck and sore back in the past but this one is fabulous. We paid £45 for it so they're not cheap but defo worth the money. you can always use it at home when guests come to stay! It's massive.

Feeling really good today considering I didn't get in till 1am. We had a friends wedding in the day then I had to work last night (also sing at weekends as well as teaching). We didn't go on stage till 10pm and sang right through till 12 with only a 15 minute break! Thought I would be shattered but still managed to get 8 hours sleep in so that makes a huge difference i think.

Bless DH, he seems to have taken over all the dog walking this weekend without me even having to promt it! Desperately want to go and buy things but we have so much sorting out to do to make some space! I'm loving the pliko pamette in Mamas and Papas at the mo in the Saville Row design! Anyone got any reviews on this one?

JodeyLea · 11/07/2010 10:48

LOL, (above post)don't think I put the asterisks in the right place! Maybe I'm more tired than I realise?????

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 14:43

thanks guy's, i guess i should just not expect to see to much and if we do it's a bonus!
already know he's a boy as he rather obligingly
had his legs wide open at the 20 week scan!
this is just to check the placentas moved up...although my midwife has said i can have a birth center birth even if it hasnt so i guess it cant be to much in the way?!
cinnamongreyhound glad you got a look at your little one...apparently i was transverse until an hour before my mum went in to labour...never to late!
jodeylea thanks for that...sounds lovely!
((wanders off to convince dp we NEED that matress!))

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 19:37

Great tips re the camping thing! DH and I bought a tent a few weeks ago, and he's itching to try it out!

That airbed sounds good, will go and investigate

sassy I'd love for the SPD to suddenly disappear! No sign of it yet though, but I do get good days and bad days. I've been given the various supports, but the only one I can get on with is the tubigrip one, but it's so hot at night, I just can't face it!

sky I didn't think we got any more scans after 20 weeks?! That's what my sonographer implied anyway. I'd love to se Fidget once more before the big day I had loads of scans with DS but I had an infection with him, so I was monitored a lot with him.

As for how Fidget is lying, I haven't a clue. I'm guessing at sideways, as I often feel most of the movements across my belly, under my ribcage or above my belly button. And I very often have a solid lump under my right side, bum?! or head?!

I see my m/w on Tuesday and I'm prepared to be told off... I haven't seen her in a good month - oops! To be fair, I do have an excuse... one of my dogs has been in and out of hospital this past month, and everything else has just flitted out of my head as soon as I think of it! Not looking forward to it though, and I need my bloods doing as well. Double oops!

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 20:19

park im sure your midwife wont mind really! [hmmm]

i wouldnt get one but the last scan showed my placenta was a bit low, so they want to check everythings ok before i go ahead with a birth center birth,as its about 20min's to the nearest big hospital and apparently my blood type is a bit short in supply or something?!
midwife didnt seem to worried though!

it's cool though as i only got to see dd at 12 weeks because in edinburgh ,were i used to live, they dont do a 20 week scan!? weird ehh!

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 21:32

lol thanks skye

Blimey re the 20 week scan though!

TBH, nobody's ever said anything about my placenta, so I have absolutely no idea where it is!

I'm planning for a home birth, and (so far) my m/w is happy for me to have one, and everything has gone quite smoothly this time, so I won't be complaining too loudly if I do get scolded

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 21:44

awhh,id love a home birth, but i dont want to frighten dd,shes a light sleeper, and a worrier,if she woke up it'd be awful, and i just dont want to have to worry about that really!

have you read ina may gaskin's guide to natural childbirth? its such a great book i've read it a few times already...it's making me feel really positive about another natural birth!

MammyG · 11/07/2010 21:54

Hi all
Its been pouring rain here for days! Enough already!
I seem to be doing ok except for blood pressure dips. Was wiped out by one this evening. Not good especially as I am hoping to go to other side of the country this week and a wedding on friday. Will just see what I am able for.
Booked a hotel for the following week - really excited as its a fab hotel and we just got a lucky deal there. DH and I are already dreaming of two whole nights away! Heaven!
Re scans - I will have scans each time i visit consultant from here on out. Not for any particular reason just the way it is here. So will have at 31, 34, 38 &40 weeks. Really looking forward to next one to as DH will be able to make it. Hope to be able to make something out but they get so big its hard.
My little squirmer is trying to make a break for it somedays. The kicks I get down low are really hard and there is these funny jumps when I lie on my side that can be quite painful.
DS1 sang incey wincey spider to my tum today to see if baby liked it. DS2 asked if doctor was going to 'magic the baby out my bellybutton?' I said yes! He then stuck an eye right up to my bellbutton and declared she was stuck and he would have to go and get his tools!!!

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 22:00

No, tbh, I'm kind of winging this one...!

DS's birth was 15.5 hours labour and so heavily managed, induced when I wasn't really ready, waters broken for me, then co-erced into spinal with forceps when I was half asleep but mad with the pain (they wanted emergency c but I flat out refused that) ... I felt so out of control.

I've decided for home birth, as I feel, well, terrified, every time I go into my local hospital - I hate it. A mother was 'accidentally killed' because someone gave her the wrong injection, and since then, I've sworn never to birth there (I didn't with DS and I refuse to with mine).

My nearest midwife-run birth centre is something like 20 miles away too, and a bit out in the styx in comparison to my house, so it doesn't really make sense to go there.

Granted, I know that if anything goes wrong I may have to go into hospital, but I'm only going if it's absolutely needed. (if that makes sense!)

As for DS, his best friend's mum has offered to have him for "D-Day" as and when, so I'm not too concerned about that. They live quite close, so that helps too. DS's aware that I'm aiming to have this one at home, and we've talked about it at great length.

I've also managed to engage a doula at student rates - she's boosted my confidence in having DC2 at home massively too - she had her DD at home, and has loads of gadgets and gizmos to help, as well as reading material - I'll ask her about that book.

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 22:01

mammy where are you?!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd love it to rain! My garden is dying by the hour...!

ooosabeauta · 11/07/2010 22:09

MammyG your sons sound adorable! I'm with you on your last comment on low bp - if you mention it everyone says, 'ooh, aren't you lucky - it's much healthier than high!' but if they knew how it felt they wouldn't say that. I did recently reply to one person that it wouldn't be much healthier if I fainted in the middle of a road or down the stairs because of it . I was a bit tired....

I'm getting some quite uncomfortable rolling around/ scraping feeling from the wriggling. I don't remember it feeling like this last time! Sometimes it's like she's pinching the inside front of my tummy and dragging nails along it. Midwife said that she's now turned head-down and in the right position, which I was slightly miffed about because was hoping for a breech caesarian. She referred me to a consultant at the hospital to discuss birthing because of the complications last time, but I'm worried I'll get so nervous that I won't explain things properly.

Off to bed with my water spray and fan!

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 22:11

thats great park i think there's so much more chance to have a natural birth if you are not in a hospital, thats pretty much what ina may gaskin is getting at!
dd's birth was about 11hrs altogether but i point blank refused to leave our house until i was in transition (not on purpose, i was just in 'birthing land' and not really thinking!)
so i gave birth within 10 mins of arriving at the hospital, not much chance for them to interfere!!
fingers crossed it will go as smoothly this time!

ooosabeauta · 11/07/2010 22:12

Sorry to hear you had a difficult last birth too park. Sounds like we've run in opposite directions because of it!

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 22:18

also great about the doula!
im considering training as one...at some point!

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 22:21

Thanks ooosabeauta

It took me ages to get over it all, and to bond with DS - I'd kill for him now, but it's taken years, literally, and a hooj battle with PND to realise this.

skye I was chatting to the doula about birth in general, and she mentioned something along the lines of a sphincter response (sp?). Imagine you're on the loo, and someone walks in. Everything tenses up, and stops. She said it can be like that when you're in labour in the hospital - lots of strangers coming in and out, taking a peek etc, so you tense up, and it delays the labour and dilation. Whereas at home, there's no-one strange around so you're more relaxed, therefore, it should all go more smoothly...

good luck with your next birth too

here's hoping!

parkj83 · 11/07/2010 22:25

Go for it skye! There are never really enough to go round anyway, but especially where I live.

It took me ages to track this one down, and I had to get in there quick before she was booked out for my 4 week window... DH was kind of bullied into agreeing to her services! Now, to make sure DC2 gets going on time(ish)! lol

Debs75 · 11/07/2010 22:27

Has anyone had a Doula before?
Because of where I live I have been offered one for free. DP can't be at the birth as we have 3 others, although if I have a C-section I want him there. He can't always make appts either, plus he is not great at the squeamish stuff. He was there when we had dc1 and I think it put him off.
I am going to train as a breastfeeding counsellor after christmas but I also like the sound of being a doula.

MammyG When i was pregnant with dc1 my nephew used to talk to her through my belly button. Boys are generally more sweet with preg bellies. My ds just loves cuddling big pregnant bellies. DD pokes it and calls the baby 'it'

skyeplusbump · 11/07/2010 22:40

park i think your doula has been reading ina may gaskin!
really hope she can help you have the birth you want this time around!
yeah there arent many around here, and i cant afford the ones that are
debs i would totally take one if you've been offered for free!!
they will be amazing! they're there for YOU not anyone else so entirely devoted to looking after your needs/whims!

and i dont know about boy's but my dd is SO sweet to my belly, she kisses 'baby brother' and sings to him,she even has named him 'king tumble' after her VERY favorite cbbies show!!

comixminx · 12/07/2010 08:10

Debs75, a doula for free! Ace! I'm having a doula but as this is my first baby I can't give any birth experiences - yet! I'm really glad I've booked her though, I think it will be really useful and good.

Skye, reading the doula website there was info there about affordability - you can get vouchers to help with the cost (if you have other people who could contribute) but I think there were also some other options? I suppose it might be too late now though of course.

cinnamongreyhound · 12/07/2010 08:12

My DS loves my belly, he keeps saying hello baby I'm your big brother and rubs it! And when I go to bed at night he's always fast asleep with several teddies shoved up his T-shirt! I asked him about it and he said he's got boy babies in his tummy like Mummy's baby

Am busily doing inversions from the spinning babies website with DH help and he is also stretching my psoas which is also supposed to help with baby positioning. FIngers crossed that this one turns as I really wanted an easier birth this time which much less intervention, DH is convinced he already has from his poking around- midwife in the making!

parkj83 · 12/07/2010 09:34

Definitely go for it debs75

I found mine by accident, friend of a friend type thing, through Facebook actually! I don't think I'd have found her if I went through the regular doula channels tbh.

And if she's free, well, no question really! I had to show DH how much doulas usually cost in comparison to what mine is charging, and only then did he agree. I also told a teeny white lie that if the baby doesn't come on time we get the money back... ahem! I think I'll be stocking up on the ol' pineapple chunks and raspberry leaf tea in the not-too-distant future...!

DS is very funny with Fidget; when he found out that what I eat/drink goes to the baby, he insisted on giving me 2 kisses morning, noon and night, and that I had to eat the 2nd kiss so baby would get it

And now he's practicing his story reading skills on his gerbils so that he can read Fidget a story at bed-time
