TMI alert - myfirstbump It will be 3 weeks tomorrow that I had emerg c section. My lochia was light pink and sweet smelling and started to trail off, but over last few days have had quite a lot of bright red blood. When I got up this morning the smell had changed and the pad smelled like what can only be described as rotting meat . Sorry, disgusting I know. Not so bad when just out, but after wee while smells pretty horrid. I've also been very achey in lower regions all day. I went to doc's (feel like I've been there ever day!) and he had feel of my tummy. He said as there wasn't any tenderness when he was pressing, didn't have temp or sweats, pulse was not racing and eating and peeing and bowels open he was not too concerned. He did make an appointment with female nurse for 2mrow to take a swap, just to check for infection. If you are concerned I would make wee appointment just to get checked out. is midwife still visiting as you could mention to her?

pigelychez While at doc's for the above, I asked about the oral antib. Doc said to keep trying, but not to force it down his throat. As I have the cream he said just to do what we can and as Sam is peeing/pooing and eating well he is not too concerned about the oral stuff.

myfirstbump · 09/06/2010 17:47

Ooh, thanks sassles. I've got to register Darcey at the doc, so I'll see if I can see someone while I'm there. I've been signed out of mw care now, so not sure if they'll see me... Big congrats on the job too

30ish - Darcey does the grunting thing too. I think it's an early hunger sign, as she gets more and more grunty, then starts grizzling, all while boxing her face But then she has a nice feed and goes back to normal. We're trying to sell too, but flats aren't in that high demand round here, so we might be here a while yet. Good luck with your sale - hope it goes quicker than ours

pigleychez · 09/06/2010 20:19

firstbump- Glad Darcey is doing well and gaining weight.

30ish- Lucy does the grunting thing too but shes not as bad as DD1 ever was. Her nickname was SnufflePig as she was incredibly noisy! We noticed such a difference when she moved into the nursery!
Sorry to hear DD is being a pickle. Im sure its just the adjustment to the new baby.
Wow at selling your house.. Doing viewings and keeping the house tidy with a 6mth old was enough with DD1.

Sassles- Hope the appointment goes ok tomorrow.

Well Lucy is having an awake period now so hopefully this will avoid a repeat of last nights wide awake period.[yawn]
Shes been a ravenous little piggy all day too!

AliMouse · 09/06/2010 20:23

Cupcake well done and congrats! Your son has the same name as my eldest - a great name!

We got Caleb registered on monday so he is Caleb Lloyd Alfred - the cheeky 3rd name after my dear old grandad.

I've had such a wonderful 6 days - all my anxieties have been unfounded - I'm completely in love with him, he's the easiest laid back little dude ever, the boys love him and I actually seem to be getting my figure back without too much trouble.

DH is back at work tomorrow so my super-anal-colour-coded-schedule kicks into action! I've tried to get DS2 looked after everyday for at least an hour as he thinks I'm really boring now all I do is sit about with one of my boobs out (he calls them bazonkas and stuffs his doggy up his jumper to impersonate me). I've got friends booked in to see every day for the next two weeks - I just want to show Caleb off!

I'd forgotton how much I love newborns - their tininess and vulnerablity and all that primative nuzzling and rooting about. Maybe it's because I'm absolutely not doing it again but I'm already feeling ultra attached to this one. I can see why the youngest is never allowed to grow up!

Great to hear all the stories - haven't had time to read through all. Really looking forward to getting lots of tips from those of you a few weeks on - it really helps, I'd forgotten so much.

mustbemadno3 · 09/06/2010 21:04

myfirstbump sounds like you have a womb infection or something, I should get it checked out.

pamelat Sounds like you have a hungry baby, think Lillias a bit like that. She has formula but wont take the teatime feed. Think she likes the comfort.

sassles poor little sam, not sure what advise to offer you though, difficult to do on empty stomach?

brb Lillia is 5 weeks old now, Ive been drs today as her eye is really swollen, shes been on drops but they took swabs today and gave her antibiotic drops but dr think she has colic....thats hell on earth to me!
Shes been really crying again all day today, asleep now, but for how long without screaming I dont know.

So if anyone has good ideas for colic other than bloody infacol that would be great.
We havent heard from hormonalmum yet, hope shes ok?

sweetkitty · 09/06/2010 21:23

Just a quick one from me, I think Jacob has an ear infection, well probably know he has he has a gunky weeping ear. Plus his acne is horrific all over his face, arms, chest and back, my poor wee man. Grumpy night ahead. Forgot to take his form in to register him with GP but have phoned and they will see him tomorrow. Don't really want him to have antibiotics so young messing with his virgin gut but if he is in pain need to get that sorted.

mustbemad - have you tried a sling keeping her upright? Look on MN/google for colic tips

Alimouse - aww lovely post, my boy not allowed to grow up either, just want to freeze time a bit, TWO seys of school uniform arrived today, two babies at school!!!

oops better go Jacob needing fed again

mustbemadno3 · 09/06/2010 21:34

sweetkitty no not tried sling but think will get one.
poor jacob its horrible putting them on antibiotics so young, lillia has baby acne too, im fed up of people asking whats wrong with her face or telling me shes too hot.

30ish forgot to add lillia grunts terrible, hence why i sleep with pillow on my head!

memorylapse · 10/06/2010 06:48

thanks everyone...sorry if I sounded paranoid..was beginning to wonder if I had done something wrong...I guess I feel left out as Olivia was born back in April so I suddenly had a newborn whilst you guys have all been still discussing your pregnancies for quite a few weeks..even now its like shes one of the eldest and at a different stage to everyone elses new borns...ho hum...think hormones are at play..I always tend to have a weepy, wobbly stage around about now.

Olivia has her first jabs next week..Im dreading it....

congratulations to all new mums..we must be almost done now surely..

Sassles..congratulations on the job..well deserved after the hoops they made you jump through!

itshappenedagain..Im so sorry that your LO's dad isnt a great help..you sound like you are doing a great job and its him that is missing out

pamelat..Im glad that things sound a bit easier..the first few weeks you just feel like a feeding machine..Ive had many a day where Ive not managed to get dressed due to Olivias feeding frenzys.

mustbemad...Lilia may have colic..have you tried gently massaging her tummy in a clockwise direction..

Pigley..well done for surviving that first day alone

SK..sorry to hear Jacob has an ear infection..if its external the doctor may well just prescribe some cream so you wont need to upset his little immune system with abs

Olivia..is changing so much..she is now 8 weeks..and spends a lot of time awake..cooing and smiling..we have the fisher price rainforest sounds activity mat which she adores..she lies there with her eyes on stalks, kicking and waving her legs the two younger dc's are finding her a bit more interesting now as she smiles at them when they talk to her..shes a happy little thing..but tends to spend the evening curled up in my arms not wanting to be put down..the evening feeding frenzys are starting to ease off though thank goodness..

typical night time for her is asleep from 10-2 then awake until about 3 then up again, maybe 5-6 ish..so we would really like to lose the 2 am feed at some point.
I dont think it will happen though as she tends to have quite a big feed then.
Ive got an evil ear and sinus infection at the moment so didnt sleep well myself last night

Carikube · 10/06/2010 09:43

ML 8 weeks - wow! I got my appt through yesterday for my postnatal check. It's not until the beginning of July but it made me realise how quickly time is going. DD2 has her check the week after and will no doubt have her first jabs at the same time.

DH has been absolutely useless the past 24 hours - not home from work until 9pm last night and then not out of bed until 8.30 this morning so I had to do bedtime last night and then sort out both girls and myself this morning. Not impressed considering we went to bed at the same time and I was up at 3.15 feeding DD2. He's told me to 'take care of myself' today but that's a bit difficult with the girls and everything else that needs doing - I think he thinks we have a little washing fairy somewhere

Right, off to playgroup....

Hobnobfanatic · 10/06/2010 10:03

Sorry to hear of all the poorly babies. My LO is amongst them - horrible virus. We both have it. Thankfully, she doesn't have the high temp I have, but she has drops for her gunky eyes and is all bunged up and poorly. Hopefully this is why she's failed her hearing test - twice! They've now referred her to the next level. I know it's because her tubes are all swollen etc, but I can't help worrying... It's really not fair that little ones are poorly - it's heartbreaking to watch them suffer. And putting drops into their eyes makes me feel terrible!

Baby Hobnob is a dream by day, but has the baby blues every evening. White noise is working well so far, thank God. DP has delighted in recording the hoover, dishwasher, tumble-dryer etc for our own CD. Pete Waterman - eat your heart out... :MUsstbemad* - you have my sympathy. White noise didn't work for DD1 and she would cry for a couple of hours every night for the early weeks - inconsolable. One position that worked for her was to hold her along the length of your forearm, tummy down, and rock her while standing. (Think 'battering ram'!) For some reason, this did the trick - but it kills your arms and back after a while!

Sorry - no time for personals, but I've been reading all the posts and keeping up to speed. Hope all are well!

mollycuddles · 10/06/2010 12:07

Feeling quite down. Was planning ongoing to bf support group but didn't this am. Excuse was that had disturbed night with Molls but really just not wanting to go and get involved. Went to mum's group with ds and thought I'd made great friends but once I went back to work I never heard from them again - they were all SAHMs. Really upset me at the time but surprised it's still effecting me

I'm a bit bluesy anyway and know I have to not isolate myself to fight it. It's quite hard though.

hollyoaks · 10/06/2010 12:28

Molly, I'm going to the bf cafe this afternoon and feel really nervous. I didn't make any other 'mammy' friends with dd1 and struggle to make friends anyway. I agree that its also hard when you go back to work to keep up with everyone. However, trying again and hopefully will meet some new people. Your right not to isolate yourself, is there a toddler group you can go to instead?

Well, Grace had another good night and slept from 9:30 till 3:30 and then 4:00 to 7:30. Feel great, make-up on, hair dried and straightened. Probably in for another tough night tonight as she likes to alternate

Sorry for no personals, got to get dd1 to eat her dinner before we pop to the bf cafe.

Hope everyone is well and poorly babies and mammies get better soon.

Den26 · 10/06/2010 13:30

Hi All - sorry to all thoe having bad nights. we had that here a few nights ago, health visitor reckoned it was a growth spurt and increased feeding = increased supply. Rian more settled now so hopefully your LO's will settle soon.

Pamelat - we have started giving rian a formula feed for his midnightish feed which seems to settle him for longer (i express while he's feeding so builing up supply in freezer). We have to stop him and wind him a few times other wise he gulps it all down and pukes it up again. stopping and winding seems to work though.

sorry to say but i have resorted to a dummy - didn't want to - but rian using my boob as comforter!! Dummy seems to settle him quicker at night.

30ish - rian grunts too - could it be wind?

ML - for a first time mum it helps me to hear what to expect so keep posting!!

Molly - i understand re feeling bluesy, at least you are aware you need to make the effort to get out, hen it goes unnoticed thats when problems start. I've been very lucky, not spent a day alone yet (3 weeks) and in-laws staying another week. will take it badly when left on my own i think as its been so long - but will also look forward to time on my own with rian

This is all definately a steep learning curve for a first time mum!!!

question - does anyone have experience of dssolvable stitches after CS? its been 3 weeks now and at the right side of scar there is a knot of thread sticking out and doesn't seem to be healing around it, not sur what to do? was thinking i should just cut it off??

hi everyone -= just to say I am still arounfd. Have n ot been active here as have had mumj staying out from africa and never get to see her so have been spening as much time as poss with her. My little Matilda is doing well, at last, and I now know so much about breastfeeding that the midwives have asked me to go and train tio be a peer supporter - it was such a struggle!

Matilda had her immunisation jabs today and I they asked us to stick around for a couple of hours after her appoitment as they were a bit concerned about her reaction - because she hardly cried and then went straight ti sleep they were concerbned she might be going to shock. Actually after them repeatedly trying toi wake up an increasingly pissed off baby, they said oh no not in shock just very chilled out!

hope sll well with everyone and look fwd to having some time to catch up with you all.

Good luck to those still in the waiting room!

brightredballoon · 11/06/2010 07:55

Hello from another tired house! DS was sick last night then up in the night saying he felt sick and needed cuddles (he's 2.5). At least its Friday

Den I have started giving DD2 a dummy to settle her at night. It was getting ridiculous her having tiny sucks, falling asleep then waking after 10 minutes sreaming until I started feeding her again, however when I gave her the dummy she settles. I am not against dummies as I'm sure its harder to get the little one to stop sucking their thumb etc.
I also had a couple of stitches poking out, the nurser cut one at skin level and told me to do the same if others appeared. I then had two I had to cut myself and then that was them gone.

ML My little one is 6.5 weeks old now, she was born 27th April so I empathise about us having wee babies now and not newborns that most on the thread have but the gap narrows as they get a few months under their belt.

just noticed the time! Got to get on

mollycuddles · 11/06/2010 09:19

Had a better night
She slept from 11 to 3 - fed for an hour and a half and then woke again at 7.
DH took me out yesterday when I was struggling. We had lunch then a nice walk in the sun and I sat on a park bench and fed Molls and then we all went to pick up dd1 from school. Saw lots of mums from school who were well taken with Molly. It's the school fair tonight which dd1 is so excited about.

Hope everyone has a good day

sweetkitty · 11/06/2010 12:41

hi everyone

Well poor wee Jacob does indeed have an ear infection in both ears he also has a cough and a cold and with his baby acne which now looks like I have scalded him with an iron on both cheeks he is having a hard time of it, he has drops and cream for his ears, GP didn't want to give oral antibiotics. His sleep was disturbed last night but he is still feeding well.

ML - it will even up soon the age gap thing, we aren't that far behind you either, I am just jealous as although I SO do not want to rush Jacob on as he is my last baby I want him to interact more with me, to smile and giggle.

brightred - we tried Jacob with a dummy too, I think if it works then great, he wouldn't take it though and we did try hard

mollycuddles - glad you are feeling a bit brighter, I find that for every hard night or few hours you have there is also a night or few hours when they are sleeping or settled it's just you don't remember the settled times when they are unsettled IYSWIM? And if you are all anything like me you spend the time they are sleeping rushing around trying to get caught up with everything else you need to do.

LuckyC - well done on the BFing front, I was asked to be a BF supporter as well but not enough time/too many children, go for it! Sounds like Matilda is doing fab too.

I agree you can feel very very isolated with a new baby, when we first moved here I knew no one and had no family closeby and the ones I did have were useless. Pluck up the courage to go to BF groups/toddlers/baby massage anything other Mums are in the same position, can be daunting at first as you think everyone knows everyone else but get talking to everyone and anyone and you will soon make some friends. Dp is always amazed at the amount of people I know here now all from toddlers!

Right better go, am totally engorged so going to commit a deadly sign and wake the boy up for a feed, he's been sleeping over 4 hours now!

pigleychez · 11/06/2010 14:03

Ali- Yay at Caleb being official now

mustbemad- never tried it but my mum swears by Gripe water for colic.

ML- Sound like Olivia is a happy little sole Hope you feel better soon.

Carikube- A washing fairy sounds fab!!

Hobnob- Hope you and baby feel better soon

Mollycuddles- Agreeb about Getting out and about, but do understand how hard it is meeting new people. Also Look at Netmums.com for local mummies in the same area. You can spend time chatting via email whilst plucking up the courage to meet.

Den- Its def a learning curve isnt it Like a whole new world. My B/SIL are expecting thier first and came round the other day with a bag of clothes etc they had been given for us to identify ie Nappy stacker. Been told to expect many more calls for advice and help.

Lucky- Glad Matilda is doing well. She sounds very chilled as DD1 always screamed at her jabs and Lucy howled a having her heel pricked.

BRB- hope DS is better soon.

SK- Poor little jacob. Hope the creams and that work soon for him

Lucy has a good couple of nights only waking to feed about 1ish and then 4.30ish.
Was expecting a friend round this morning but she cancelled at the last minute after putting the time back twice! So frustrating as DD was waiting for them to come for lunch and was getting grumpy/hungry. Shes always late! So disorganised its unreal. We have re-scheduled for next week to try again!

Lucy has started pushing herself up on her legs. DD1 always had strong legs too and could support her own weight from a pretty young age. Lucy already seems to have grown up so much its unreal. Wheres my tiny newborn baby going!?

Whats happened to the warm sunny weather?!?!?

Hope everyone is well

Den26 · 11/06/2010 20:23

brb - thanks for advice re stitches and finding dummy a godsend!

sk - jacob, hope it clears soon

MoggMum · 11/06/2010 21:18

Hi all, haven't posted in a while but Dylan is actually sleeping for a change so have chance to catch up.

Congratulations to all the new June Mums - Racquel, Ali, Yorky, Cupcake & Booboo

Any news from homebirthmummy yet?

Cupcake your birth story almost made me cry as it reminded me so much of mine - such a similar experience. They were going to try delivery by forceps too and had my legs in stirrups before they changed their minds at the last minute (due to position of baby?s head) and performed a c-section instead. I was sort of relieved as I could have ended up with an episiotomy as well as a c-section

We brought Dylan home after only two days in hospital as I wasn't getting any sleep (or midwife support) and just wanted to be at home with family.

One week on and I?m still on a massive learning curve, having never so much as changed a nappy before (although Dylan can poo for England so I?m an expert at that already!) . BF going well but MW has told us that he has tongue tie and will need to go to hospital to get it sorted. Despite that, he?s already 1oz over his birth weight which they were pretty impressed with.

Having read many of your posts, it?s comforting to know that I?m not alone with the random feeding/sleeping patterns. He seems to feed for ages and I?m sure sometimes he?s just using me as a comforter. He often falls asleep on my boob but as soon as I put him back in his Moses basket he starts crying again! I know it?s early days but I?m not sure when it?s realistic to develop a routine?

Also have been advised not to express yet but I would like to soon so DH can help with one of the feeds. Any advice??

TomlinTowers · 11/06/2010 21:53

Hi All

Sassles - many congrats on the job! You really deserve it after all you went through to get the interview!

Moggmum - glad all is going well. No advice on expressing except to say that I have been told to wait until 6 weeks to get BF established.

Den26 - we have started DD1 on a dummy as well after several 5 hour marathon feeding sessions!

ML - glad you are feeling a bit better, sometimes I can't wait for DD1 to get to the 12 week stage, I remember everything seemed to suddenly get easier when we got to that stage with DS1. The cooing sounds lovely!

Molly - good that you are aware what you need to do to help yourself, I hope you meet some more friendly people this time round. Perhaps you could make the first move if you are feeling up to it and invite some people from the local toddler group round for cake? There are probably lots of mums in your area who are just as in need of company - maternity leave can be lonely if you are the only one in your "usual" group of friends to have a baby and everyone else is at work.

Sorry to hear about all the poorly little ones. It must be tough for them learning to deal with the outside world after 9 months of having their every need met in the womb! Hope they are all better soon.

We have been struggling a little bit here at the moment. DD1 has developed the most awful problem with wind in the afternoons/evenings. Night feeds are still straightforward thank goodness - wakes up twice a night, feeds for 20 mins and then straight back down which is brilliant, and day time feeds are OK, but the mid-aft and evening feeds are becoming a thing of dread. DD will feed for 10 - 20 mins from one boob then start fussing - pulling away, arching back etc. I know there is milk there because when I squeeze there is milk coming out. So I put her on shoulder to wind, then put her back to boob to see if she wants any more. Problems start when she finishes feeding - will do one tiny burp then just lie on my shoulder. I put her down to my lap and she starts grunting and straining, so put her back on the shoulder and there is another tiny burp. This can go on for literally 3 hours!! After an hour she is so desperate for sleep she starts crying when she is grunting/straining. We have tried everything we can think of - winding during the feed, not offering her second boob in case she is overfeeding, giving her dummy to see if she just wants comfort sucking - nothing seems to make any difference! I know its not colic because she isn't screaming in agony thank goodness, but does anyone have advice? Should I just keep on feeding on demand until she falls asleep on boob, or do you think she is overfeeding due to comfort sucking?? Help!

Also, whilst on the subject of digestion can I ask what everyone's babies are like with their poos? We last had an explosive dirty nappy last weekend. Before that, the last big nappy was three - four days earlier. In between the big nappies, DD just seems to pass tiny amounts of poo - literally just a smear on a small mark on the nappy. DS1 used to produce two massive poos a day but he was on formula so not sure what is usual for a bf baby - does this seem normal? She isn't in pain, distended stomach etc so I really don't think she is constipated.

Sorry for all the questions tonight - I think the sleep deprivation has finally caught up with me and I am starting to doubt my abilities to feed her properly and I am overanalysing the feeding because of my problems with it before. Any help gratefully appreciated!!

Mogmum They do say wait 6 weeks before expressing or using a dummy as apparently babies can get nipple confusion where they get used to the pacifier or the teat and then wont suck from breast (suckling to get milk from the breast is very different to the bottle). However I didn't wait 6 weeks with any of mine and they have never had a problem. I haven't given DD2 a bottle yet but that's because I haven't had the need just yet. I have expressed milk though and my supply hasnt changed. I would say go for it if it would give you a break which would raise your spirits about breastfeeding - rather that then you stop IYSWIM?

Tomlin It is possible for breastfed babies to go upto 10 days without a poo. Apparently breastmilk is possible to be fully absorbed by their body and since your little one doesnt seem to be unsettled I wouldnt worry.
It sounds to me like your little one has trapped wind. My DD and DD2 both behaved as you describe with their trapped wind. DD2 winds best if I walk her up and down stairs whilst rubbing her back with the heel of my hand or firm rhythmic pats on her back. When DD2 does the suckling then funny "hmm, mmm, hmm" noises when she looks like she wants to suck but then looks wriggly and comes off I pop her over my shoulder and go and make a cuppa or see to the other children or go upstairs etc and 9 times out of 10 out comes a thunderous burp!

I am up far too late, been making outfits for the towns annual fete/parade tomorrow. Am off to bed now though

p.s ML I totally agree, we got a 7 seater and although we rarely use the 2 extra seats in the boot it is liberating putting the children in at waist height and having enough room for a picnic blanket/buggy/shopping etc!
