Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sweetkitty · 07/06/2010 11:58

homebirthmum - aww best of luck, I know exactly how you are feeling I cried all the way to the hospital for my induction but TBH it was fine, you are probably like me and on the cusp so one shot of gel should kick start you. The worst thing was them insisting I be monitored on the CTG for 30 mins (ended up being about 50 as they left me) before and after the gel, it was particularly bad because of the SPD. You will be fine and be holding your newborn in no time.

ML - love the smiles and giggles, I so wish we were getting some, Jacob is such a fussy angry little thing and I am dying to see some smiles.

MDM - hollyoaks described the let down to a T, mine is painful like pins and needles over your boobs and can happen at any time even if I am not feeding, if I am emptying the dishwasher for example, most strange. I have expressed the grand total of ONE bottle so far that Jacob hated.

pamelat - Alex sounds like Jacob he is fussy as well, I don't always think it is hunger though as he will latch for a few minutes then latch off again. I think sometimes it is just their age they don't know what to be doing with themselves IYSWIM. The sling is helping though.

pigley - good luck on your first solo day

Sorry for lack of other personals Jacob is crying again so I had better go and DD2 and 3 will be wanting food soon no doubt.

mollycuddles · 07/06/2010 12:09

I never felt a let down with DS but only fed him for 3 weeks and never got properly established. With DD1 I got a painful let down from about 2 weeks - burning, sharp sensation in both nipples - more noticeable in non feeding one. Started almost immediately with let down with Molls. It became less painful with DD1 after about 6-8 weeks and just felt tingly. Looking forward to that as feel I have to press hard on other boob during feeds at the moment. I did have nice tingly let down while pg with Molls though although not so convenient. Was examining a 3 week old in my last week before maternity leave and she started rooting at my mega pg boobs and I was suddenly leaking colostrum - very professional!

RacquelWelsh · 07/06/2010 12:21

Thanks everyone for your congratulations, I can't believe how quickly the time goes by now I have a baby. I've missed reading all the updates on the thread and hope I can get back to it soon.

Congratulations to Moggmum, Booboo and Alimouse and good luck to homebirthmummy, induction did the job for me!

memorylapse was interesting to hear about the cord being around your son's neck too, my midwife said it's not that uncommon and "rarely fatal" !!!!

first1 let's not compare tears , but I empathise with you. Seems to be healing OK but am TERRIFIED of doing the deed ever again!

Been trying to write birth story but not managed yet (and made me cry so thought best wait a bit!) Milk came in on Saturday, I've got CLEAVAGE for the first time ever. I didn't mention it to DH and got undressed to get into bed and watched him do a triple take before he loudly commented on the size of my "norks" (?!)

Am totally besotted with George and breastfeeding seems to be going alright so far. He wakes a couple of times in the night for a feed and about half the time I can get him into his moses basket afterwards and the other half I can't so he stays in bed with us. Am still on a high I think as haven't felt this happy in years.

We've been out for couple of walks which were great.

Wishing everyone well and sorry for anyone I've missed, got to go and feed again.

rebeccacad · 07/06/2010 12:59

Hello, sorry to jump in on your thread but hormonalmum who was on your antenatal thread posted in breastfeeding support about using a supplementer. I've given her some answers but she hasn't checked in and having just been through this myself I wanted to shout out to her that I've answered on her thread and she should feel very free to contact me if she wants any advice.

Congratualtions to all you new Mums. My DD is now 15 weeks and I cannot believe it has gone so fast.

brightredballoon · 07/06/2010 13:43

ML yes echo what everyone says, dont take it personally and do keep posting as its ovely to read the thread even if I ant reply very much (nothing to do with the baby, its my 2yr old and 4yr old that are keeping me on my toes!)

Pamelat I think it sounds like a growth spurt, my baby also has days of being quite settled and others not. She has been quite windy lately so I am wondering if its linked to anything I might have eaten. I was reading about galactogues which are foods that increase your supply and also about fenugreek capsules from health shops can increase your supply.

Tomlin Snap! DD2's christening is also on 8th August!

Carikube I was doing more tidying up after my DH as well! It was lovely having his company and an extra pair of hands but I am now finding I can feed DD2 whilst walking/seeing to the dinner etc so I can manage. I dont like to feed her like that often but she doesnt seem to mind!

Rachel hope you are getting on fine, I know the feeling no time to read and post at the same time! I started this reply at 8.30 this morning and now just getting time to finish it at 1.45 because DS has fallen asleep on the sofa and DD is watchinga film whilst DD2 is still asleep in her car seat from when I picked DD up from nursery.

brightredballoon · 07/06/2010 13:45

rebeccacad how thoughtful trying to get in touch with hormonalmum I am sure she will see your post on here and look back to the breastfeeding thread.

brightredballoon · 07/06/2010 13:49

Good luck hormonalmum, just think you will have your gorgeous baby in your arms very soon, can't wait to hear your news.

SK, how are you getting on? Did your DP come home with tail between his legs the other day?

Sorry for all those small replies, I looked back and realised I had missed loads.

Den26 · 07/06/2010 14:22

CONGRATULATIONS Moggmum, Alimouse, Booboomonster, Tiny

First1 - sorry your having a time of it. Hope Chloe's infection has cleared and your stitches improve soon I'm still bleeding 2.5 weeks after and had CS thought it wouldn't last as long as normal delivery?

Homebirth - thanks for advice re taking care when breastfeeding! I laughed when MW asked if i'd thought of contraception - eh cannot be furthest from my mind at present!! Good luck with the induction, can't wait to here your story

Carikube - hope your cousin is doing ok

BRB - thanks for advice re expressing. Have tried again since and managed to fill a full bottle from both sides

Sassles - having similar feeding problems here. Rian not really settling and wants feeding constantly. Health visitor in today and he has put on nearly 1lb in 1 week which explains the constant feeding! She is happy with him and says he is feeding more to build up milk supply so encouraged me to continue although recognises its hard. We have been giving Rian a formula bottle at times which seems to fill him up but don't want it to interfere with my milk. It does make it easier when you see the results.

Memorylapse - so looking forward to Rian lying content on his mat. he is not settled long enough for this at the moment. Also looking forward to real smiles and not just wind !

MDM at the mess little boys make!! Have been caught out quite a few times. I'm waiting on my baby whisperer book being delivered

racquel - glad to hear things are going well

mollycuddles · 07/06/2010 15:04

When posting earlier I missed your update homebirthmummy - good luck x

TomlinTowers · 07/06/2010 15:17

Hi All

Just logging on to see if we had heard from Homebirthmummy or Carikube - will try again later to see if we have any more news.

Interesting to read all the advice and experience about expressing - I hated it last time with DS1 - felt like a dairy cow being hooked up to the electric pump, but I feel that my head is in a bit better shape this time round as BF so far going well, so I may try expressing soon. I have read that one should wait until 6 weeks before expressing to make sure that BF is properly established - is that true, and has anyone found expressing inteferes with their milk?

MDM - little boys are worse for covering your trousers than little girls in my experience. DS1's particular trick was to wait until you lifted up his legs to wipe round his bottom, and then expelling the biggest runniest poo all over the clean nappy I have just placed under him, which then leaked on to the changing mat, towel, etc etc. He did it day after day, I think in the end he found it funny! He would always look at me afterwards with a look of pure innocence on his face as well! With DD, so far we have only been covered in wee!

ML - sorry if you are feeling ignored, please don't take it personally. You are a very helpful source of advice to us all!

My Dsis is back at the GP's today for another blood test. She has got this awful itchy rash, and the first blood test showed she had abnormally high liver function results, so they need to re-do the test. She has been told it could by obstetric cholestasis, or the early signs of pre-eclampsia, or something else entirely - fingers crossed it's nothing too serious. It is her first baby and she is terrified of being induced, even though I have tried to reassure her that I was induced with DS1 and it really wasn't bad. I think she just wants everything to be textbook as it's her first - I have suggested she look through some of the threads on mumsnet just to see how many variations of a "normal" birth there can be!

Will check back later to see if there is any news!

cupcakefairy · 07/06/2010 17:41

Hello ladies! I'm so sorry; I tried to post from hospital but my phone was playing up!

Our baby boy Jude was born on Saturday 5th June at 3.11am, weighing 8lbs.

He is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and worth all the waiting! He's feeding really well (loving all the posts about giant norks...my milk has come in today and I feel like a porn star; dh can't stop staring at them )

Sorry not to post more personals but I have read the thread- so glad most of the overdueys have got their babies now; congrats ali, booboo and others...hope homebirthmummy is ok- sure you're right SK that it'll be quick for her.

I'm working on my birth story; will be back!

homebirthmommy hope all gos well for you, you have been very patient waiting for this little one so hope you have an easy birth x

tomlintowers know what you mean re expressing and feeling like a cow. I started to do it and now stopped as it was making me tearful watching my nipple being viciously sucked!

ml i feel ignored on here sometimes but its just that i think people are busy with there new babies and are prob jealous of your routine and happy baby i know i am lol!

hormonalmum dont feel guilty if you want to do combined feeding, I have introduced a couple of bottles in the evening as I am sick of feeding to be honest. I feel guilty to the other dc. Eventually I want to stop bf and just do formula, not sure how to do this if I do it slowly or just stop? But combined feeding I am sure is fine, I salute anyone that can just do exclusive bf, I'm knackered!!!

Lillia is a lovely baby but is very unsettled from about 4 - 8p.m where she just crys even though shes bf on and off throughout these hours and is only more content if she is bounced on my knee or carried around the house. And I think slings are a good idea, but I dont want a clingy baby...shes already quite clingy!
She feeds ok at night but grumbles like something from a farmyard when shes put down, so I have took to sleeping with a pillow over my head!!!

Hope everyone doing o.k and coping with new babies and hormones!! What happens after all the babies have arrived (think only 2 left?) Do we start a new thread then?

cupcakefairy · 07/06/2010 18:51

Hi mustbemad yeah I think we will move to the postnatal board then, finally!! There are still plenty on the list who haven't announced a birth but we haven't heard from them in so long... guess we'll just have to decide when to take the step over!

Anyway, here's my birth story!

Woke Friday, day of induction with pain at 1am. Looked at phone whenever it happened, was every 10 mins then became every 8 mins. At 5am had a bloody show & thought it must be real thing as hadn't had anything like that before so woke dh. Called MAU about 6am who said to come in but no hurry. Got there 7.45, pains slowed down a bit. Was examined & told no, cervix still v high and tight..was gutted. Sent to ward then for planned induction that started with propess at about 11am...like a tiny tampon that stays in for 24 hours. This is what they use even before the gel cos my cervix was so unfavourable so I was feeling very down about the whole process!

Then we just had to wait. At about 3pm I went to the loo and managed to pull out the propess oops?by 4pm they still hadn?t come to put another one in & I was thinking we were gonna be there for hours just waiting but then pains started again. They were getting worse with bad back ache; I was rocking on a birth ball and just praying this was the real thing. Midwife finally agreed to examine me at about 8pm with pains every 4mins (I think I was scaring the other pregnant girls on the ward with my panting by then!) When she said I was 4cms with bulging waters & could go to delivery I burst into tears; was so relieved it was real contractions!

Anyway (sorry this is long; quite cathartic to write out!) got to delivery & my waters broke after a few mins. They made me go on constant monitor which I desperately didn?t want- it was horrible having to stay on the bed. Jude was back to back and I cannot describe the AGONY of the back pain with each contraction ? I thought I was going to burst in two. I have a huge friction burn from where Dh vigorously rubbed my back the whole way through He was such a star.

After a while I asked for gas & air ? what great stuff. Didn?t really do much for the back pain but so good having something to focus on and in between contractions I was totally blissed out on it. A few hours later midwife told me I was moving too much during contractions & she couldn?t get good fetal heart rate so was going to have to put a scalp clip in. I said absolutely not & told her my baby was just fine - she examined me & I was 10cms by then so she said I could start pushing, hooray. She got all the baby delivery stuff out & said ?let me see the clock so I know what time he delivers? to dh so I was all excited that he?d be here within a few mins. An hour of pushing later still no baby and meconium stained waters mw got paediatrician in who said because he was face up & not really budging they would have to try forceps in theatre, possibly c-section, so suddenly I was signing a consent form and dh was looking terrified asking loads of questions.

To be honest, I loved the theatre bit- the team were amazing, explaining everything, anaesthetist was absolutely lovely lady and best of all I was pain free after the spinal dh has since admitted he hated it cos it happened so quickly & seeing me getting all the drips etc put in. They put my legs up on the elevated thingies and asked if I could lift one (thinking I wouldn?t be able to) I did and they all had to grab me cos I almost fell off the table they were all laughing at me it was such a surreal moment! Anyway, a couple of pushes (that I couldn?t feel, so odd!) and Jude was pulled out with the forceps & on my chest, dh & I both crying our eyes out. I was so so glad to have avoided c-section.

Over the next couple of days practically every midwife we saw kept telling me how amazing it was I didn?t have an epidural with a back-to-back labour so I felt quite proud I wasn?t trying to be a hero; I just didn?t know if the pain I was in was the worst it was going to get so kept holding off on asking for pain relief.

I had an episiotomy so stitches quite sore now; I can?t wait to feel a little more normal & not take half an hour every time I need to go to the loo. Thanks so much for the tea tree & lavender oil bath tip, great stuff! And for whoever said to take dried fruit to the hospital..I ate lots of apricots & finally faced 'the first poo' last night after crying about it on dh cos I was so scared of pushing flashbacks & of pain in stitches but happy to report that my bowels are fine

Look forward to getting through these first few months with all you ladies

OP posts:
Den26 · 07/06/2010 19:52

Congrats cupcake hope stitches ease soon, glad bowels fine

mustbemad - my health visitor advised me to gradually reduce BF if i wanted to stop to prevent engorgement and mastitis.

Tomlin - think bottle is ok if LO latching on well to breast consistently

pamelat · 07/06/2010 20:18

homebirthmummy - good luck !!

congrats cupcake , reading your labour story brings it all back. Alex is 3 weeks old today but the birth itself seems about a year ago (think I must have post traumatic shock )

den/mustbemad - I saw HV today after my worries/struggles with constant breastfeeding. He has put 1lb on in a week so she said he was doing really well but is an "inefficient" feeder (or maybe I am that?) but anyway she said it was him, she said that I would be exhausted to keep it up. She asked me to try to get until the weekend when he will be 4 weeks old and to then mix formula in.

If he starts to be more settled or feed less, then I will carry on just breastfeeding. In fact today (just breast fed) he has been a dream baby, I cant believe it. He had a terrible night last night which is maybe why he has slept all day and fed nicely (2 hourly) today.

she said that mixed feeding is ok as long as you make the same timed feeds the formula one, ie) always 5/6pm ish and 10pm ish and that my body would just learn to not make milk for that time. Anyway basically she said that a minimum of 6 breast feeds a day (currently doing 13!!) would ensure supply is kept up.

feel a lot more positive and alex has been so good today, maybe picking up on my mood ?

sweetkitty · 07/06/2010 20:44

cupcake - aww what a lovely story and well done you back to back labour baby face up and no epidural, it is utterly surreal isn't it the minute you meet this little person you fall so utterly in love with them it was me that ranted about dried fruit and lavender and tea tree oil baths, the stitches will ease up in a week or so

mustbemadno3 - I think every baby is clingy at the start it's a comfort/reassurance thing, they grow out of it (or mine did), I have carried Jacob in the Moby sling most of teh afternoon/evening and cannot recommend it enough. It looks all complicated at the start but I got the hang of it quickly, it calms him down immediately.

Tomlin - you are SO right about little boys, I am still getting used to the nappy changes and he always likes to get me and poo into a nice clean nappy, yes lifting his legs seems to make him want to poo and it's yellow and frothy

brightred - thanks for asking after me, there's just a lot going on here right now, poor DP is going through another restructure at work so there is a chance he could not have a job, we are trying to sell MILs house and get this extension up and running. Oh and the usual new baby, 3DCs to contend with. Think it just got on top of us both.

racquel - yey on the new boobs, anyone who wants some really nice nurseing bras check out hotmilk bras at figleaves.com, a lot nicer than those big white things and make you feel a bit more normal IYSWIM?

Carikube · 07/06/2010 20:51

Cupcake many congratulations! I'm with you on how good things feel after having the spinal - it sounds a bit like my labour with DD1 and I remember telling DH that I wanted to tell the anaesthetist that I loved him . You may find it useful to write your whole birth story down; we did it after DD1 and I'm trying to do it now for DD2. I also got a copy of my notes from my first labour (and am just in the process of applying for them for DD2) as I found it quite useful reading through them and seeing if they tallied with how I remembered things.

pamelat I was told that DD1 was a 'muncher' which was partly why I found feeding her so difficult. I had honestly thought it was me but having seen how different it is feeding DD2 then I think that there are just some babies who aren't going to feed easily. I'm trying not to rest on my laurels as it's still early days but hopefully it will keep going. DD1 isn't totally impressed though when she sees me getting my boobs out . I think I'm only just getting 6 feeds in a day though so I just hope that supply keeps up...

Good luck homebirthmummy; not too long now before we all move to the other side......

Yorky · 07/06/2010 21:19

Haven't posted on here for ages. I have tried really hard to lurk and keep up to date with all the arrivals, lovely names and tear-jerking birth stories but kept falling behind.

Just a quick note to say David Luke finally arrived at 2.05am on Friday 4th June (10 days late) after 3 sweeps and one attempt to get me to hospital for induction. Stuck to my guns and got my 3rd lovely home water birth At 9lb 1oz he was a full half pound lighter than his big sister!

Congratulations to all, will try and keep up better

booboomonster · 08/06/2010 10:02

Just a quickie - baby feeds non stop so haven't had pc out yet - but wanted to say congratulations to Ali, Mogg, Tiny and Cupcake! Yes Cupcake, we must have been labouring at the same time with the births only a few minutes apart! Great news for all of you and well done! Loved your birth story Cupcake, hope to write mine up soon. Just need to hear from Homebirth now -I hope she's ok.

Great to hear everyones newborn updates - will post more later.

booboomonster · 08/06/2010 10:05

And congrats Yorky! Sorry missed you off my list!

Sassles · 08/06/2010 10:20

Yorky Congratulations. Lovely name you have picked too. Well done for sticking to your guns for the home birth.

Carikube I agree writing birth story is good idea as it is so easy to forget the details. I was quite shocked reading my hospital notes the first time they were left by my bed. They had to rescucitate Sam when the did the C section, but the first we knew of it was in the notes three days later. His APGAR at 1 min was 6. Guess it wasn't a big deal of they may have said, but thought that was something I should have been told?

sweetkitty I hated being strapped to the CTG monitor at induction too. They kept me on for 30 mins before each prostin and 2 hours after!! It was torture lying on your back. So uncomfy and I was sick twice. Trouble was, each time I was sick and had to lean forward the trace stopped, so they needed to keep me on for even longer. Horrid Catch 22. I was begging them to take me off in the end. Was actually glad when they monitored Sam through clip attached to his head it was that bad. Hope the restructure goes ok for your DH. Not fun times.

Pamelat 13 feeds a day. My goodness. Not sure how many I'm doing. Samuel is still feeding like a maniac, but I prefer the feeds every 2 hours to the marathon awake session of 8 hours. At least my nipples get a wee break! HV coming today so hoping lots of weight gained as a result of the feeding. Well done on the pound weight gain!

Cupcake Well done!! Many congrats. You must have been so fed up after 14 days and glad the induction went well. Much Kudos on the gas and air only. I could not do it. LOL at pulling the propess out. I would prob have done the same. i managed to pull out not one, but two drips from my arm. Oops.

must be mad Poor you with the pillow. I find that even if DH has Sam in another room to try to let me sleep,, it is impossible if I can hear him even a wee bit. Must be some maternal instinct thing. Sam needs to be asleep before we put him in basket. Worried i am starting bad habits, but think he is too young to really worry about that yet. Unless I am wrong??

Den 26 Well done on the weight gain. Glad the intense feeding is getting results. I think supplementing may be a good idea here too.

tomlin I've been told to wait till 6 weeks before expressing too as it will interfere. Will speak more with HV today.

Sorry if TMI. It will be 3 weeks on Thurs since birth (C section). I bled light pinky stuff (more mucus with hints of blood in it) and it had pretty much stopped two days ago. However, I am now getting pretty heavy amounts of bright red blood. Is that normal? My stomach feels weird too. Feels bigger than it did and sort of hard in places. Anyone else experienced this? Again will chat will HV today.

Samuel is getting big spot on his chin. think as a result of contact with breast and moisture during feeding. Any tips for avoiding this, i am washing, then drying his chin after feeds to see if this helps.

Sam just gone to sleep, so nipping for quick bath as didn;t get one yesterday. Will answer more posts later.

S xx

Sassles - expressing does increase supply and the only possible confusion relates to feeding baby with a bottle ie nipple confusion. Never had a problem with dd1 so think this is overplayed really. I haven't started expressing but will do in another couple of weeks. Reason I'm not doing it is I'm feeding all the time anyway! Actually she's pretty good - 3-4 hrs at night and 1.5-2 in the day. Think I'm doing 10 to 12 feeds a day. Had a mega feeding day on Saturday and I reckon she fed about 50% more than usual then. I bought some fenugreek for my supply but haven't needed it - any takers as had Molls weighed yesterday and she's sticking beautifully to 75th centile.

I really don't think you can spoil little babies and Molly has barely been near her moses basket - why did I buy it again? Dd1 almost never went into hers either. When I woke to feed Molls at 6 this am she was just lying looking at dh - absolutely rapt.

Molls has a few wee milk spots too - this usually gets worse at 3-4 weeks but is nothing to worry about. Just an annoying thing that happens to spoil your baby's good looks when going out visiting is beginning to seem more doable.

It is normal to have a big gush of bleeding right at the end as the womb completely clamps down to normal size but if you're worried see you gp for swabs because it could be an infection which is very common.

Cupcake - hope the stitches are easing. I used teatree in water to pour on when I weed as well as in the bath for my graze and it definitely helped.

Congrats yorky on your lovely home birth. Gorgeous name. Don't worry about staying up to date - all postings are welcome. I am only on here so much as I have an iPhone and can post while feeding in bed.

Hope you're ok ML as you've gone quiet. Feeling paranoid that I upset you by saying I was glad Molly isn't cooing and smiling yet. It was more a reaction to my mum who keeps saying how lovely it'll be when Molly is doing stuff and I am completely happy as she is and as she is probably my last (not definitely though - lol) I just want to enjoy every moment.

Jacob has the most terrible baby acne just now I remember DD3 having it too and reading up on it, it is something to do with my hormones coming out. It's all over his face in his hair, his ears, torso and arms. The spots pop and go all crusty too, there is nothing you can do apart from wash their face with plain water a lot. And he had a gunky eye and bad nappy rash but we have cleared both of them up, my poor wee baby, he is still utterly gorgeous though and the spitting image of his Daddy which DP is so happy with as the 3 girls look nothing like him. I think he is going to have brown eyes as well.

Yorky - many congratulations

Feeding wise - he has a good morning feed then has a large chunk of sleep maybe even 4 hours, then lunchtime feed then a sleep and if he is grumpy I will offer him a feed often. I don't think you can overfeed BF babies and sometimes they have long feeds sometimes a snack. Last night he slept from 10.30pm to 2.30pm, had a good feed and slept through until 7 this morning, cannot complain about that. He is feeding and falling back asleep straight away now as well and so am I (we are cosleeping)
