I had my 12 week scan today. It was great seeing the little one moving around! :D I asked the doctor about doing a nuchal scan and she said that it's not routine out here and that they only do it if the is a family history of problems or if the woman is older. She said everything is ok anyway without taking a reading.

After the scan we went up to her office to discuss everything and she said that she would expect me to put on around 10kgs over the pregnancy. She told me to stop the folic acid at the end of the week and then start iron and calcium supplements with baby asprin everyday because I am overweight (she is worried about blood clotting etc......) I asked if that was ok and she is it was completely normal to take them. Has anyone else had to take asprin?

I told her I was overweight as I had been on a treatment of steroids since November and my blood pressure has been fine but she still recommended taking them. Anyway back in 3 weeks for a check and another scan in 6 weeks time. She said we should be able to tell the sex then......woop

Hopeful1980 · 10/06/2010 11:22

Great news about the scan Squistle!

I'm 11+2 and not planning to tell work till 14 if I can hide my tum till then. I've been pushing for a promotion hard for about 8 months, missed one last month but was told there was stil another job coming up soon. So when I was told there was no other job I felt like they'd let me down as I would have left 8 months ago if I'd known this!!

Anyway, can't throw my toys out the pram too much given the shock news I'll be giving them in a few weeks.

5 days till scan day - this is like the 2 week wait till you can do the preg testing after ovulation, time practically stands still!!

xx

DuelingFanjo · 10/06/2010 11:29

Congratulations on the scan squistle. I've not been told to take asprin but you have reminded me about the Calcium.

notso I tidied like mad and then the midwife just rushed in and rushed out again!

SlightlyTired · 10/06/2010 11:50

Congrats to everyone who has had scans! So exciting - starting to be real now!

Hopeful I missed out on a promotion earlier in the year as well - really felt it was very unfair. In fact, it contributed to the decision to try for this baby... If I were Victoria Beckham, this child would be called "Annual Review".

emma2617 · 10/06/2010 12:30

Hopeful I missed out on a promotion a few months ago aswell!! It was only a secondment for 6 months, but as we all guessed it has turned permanant...I was fuming!!! Like you slightly that was a contributing factor to trying for this bambino!

I just want out of this place! I amhoping that when our lease is up in February we will be able to move back to Yorkshire! I will be on Mat leave so still getting paid with pleanty of time to find another job!!! Here's hoping!

NickiSue · 10/06/2010 13:31

emma2617 You should definitely move back here to Yorkshire. You'll not find a better or wetter place lol!

Congrats to those who have had scans and good luck for those waiting! I can't get over you know the sex so soon spangle

Anyone have any good ideas for waking yourself up in the afternoons? Around 1pm I suddenly get insanely tired, almost falling asleep stood, so so tired but as DS is home from preschool at 12pm there is no chance of a brief nap. Any ideas? Shattered!

Lavitabella · 10/06/2010 13:31

Lots of scans coming up ladies, I am excited for you all. I have a 16 week scan on the 29th of June and just can't wait to see them again

Duelling Sorry about your MIL, can I ask a personal question? Was this your first attempt at IVF? one of my close friends is going through it right now and I am so hopeful for her. I know everyone's situation is different but I want this for her so much and can't bear for it not to work.

emma2617 · 10/06/2010 15:28

nickisue I LOVE yorkshire! I was born and raised inwest yorkshire and love it! I do have to argue with the wetter bit though...currently residing in Manchester the rain is pretty constant!!!

lavita how many bonus scans do you get when having twins? Just the one? or are you goingto make us all insanely jealous?!

MrsSnaplegs · 10/06/2010 16:13

Well just about to finish for the day - only one day left here woohoo! hope everyone has had a good day - I have been in mat clothes for a good few weeks now, definately only one in there but seem to be huge very quickly this time. Either that or I have a huge amount of fluid as well - mm sounds ominously like a future pregnancy plight when my waters go! Luckily I don't have to spend a huge amount on maternity clothes as I have a work issued uniform (very tasteful) so only have to worry about the evenings and weekends. Quite happy for slouchy clothes then or pyjamas if I can get away with it!!
Spangle - Wow impressed you have been told sex so early - must be a great scan, we can't find out here but as I am moving I hope the next area we live will tell all at 20 week sacn! We found out last time and it was really helpful in planning. Also means we can stop calling bump by pet name DD has given it!!

Lavitabella · 10/06/2010 16:25

Emma As it's identical twins I think I will have a lot of scans, fortnightly from 20 weeks.
Fraternal twins you get extra, every 3/4 weeks but identicals have a high risk of TTTS (twin to twin transfusion) where 1 twin can take more of the blood supply and end up much bigger. So I need to be monitored much more closely, I have been referred from West Middlesex hospital so will be having half my scans there and half at Queen Charlotte's in Hammersmith where they have a multiples consultant. It is nice to get to see the twins all the time though and I am hopeful there won't be any complications.

I also think I can feel them slightly I know it is early (13+3) but am sure I can feel a fluttering sensation! I might be imagining it

janski31 · 10/06/2010 16:58

Ah Lavitabella your having twins how wondeful! My boyfriends brother has just had twins 2 boys non identical they are soooo cute getting big now though!!

Congratulations to you all on your pregnancies!!!

I am due on the 12th dec had my dating scan last week had a high nuchal fold so have to go back for a scan at 16 weeks just hope and pray everything ok am trying to think positive.

Take care all of you x

Persnickety · 10/06/2010 17:08

Hello everyone! So nice to see happy scan news.

Squistle, did you see a consultant? I would be very of advice to stop folic acid without an explanation of why. Folic is acid is generally good for everyone (which is why its in breakfast cereal). And also I'd be a tad sceptical of the baby aspirin advice. I would do some research and think about whether I really thought I was at significant risk of blood clotting, especially as your weight gain is due to steroids and not lifestyle. I'd talk to the doctor who put me on steroids and ask him/her if I was at increased risk of blood clotting in pregnancy.

www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/isitsafeto/aspirinexpert/

Also, it seems to me that if children under 16 shouldn't have aspirin, then perhaps unborn babies shouldn't either.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2349593.stm

I just think sometimes UK doctors are too quick to prescribe things based on statistics rather than individual cases.

I am very jealous of whoever it was who found out the sex. I am not a woman of remarkable patience. I wish it would come on the pee stick. Although I have read that sex given as early as nuchal is often wrong. So you might want to double check at the anomoly scan before you buy that pink frilly wardrobe.

Nuchal scan on Monday... can't wait. Not least because of my ripe old age so am kind of worried this time round. Fingers crossed all is well.

HobbitMama · 10/06/2010 17:58

Hi all,
Another newbie to add to the pot - have posted a wee bit on AIBU but not much elsewhere as of yet!
Am 13+0 today with DC4, just had my early scan and it went very well! Couldn't get the neck measurement though, so I have to ring up tomorrow to get another scan in the next week to try again!
AND, I guess because I'm quite high risk/on the older and larger side of things, I get scans at 28, 34 and 36 weeks! Wahey! So, all in all, a pretty good day!
Haven't managed to read through previous threads yet, but will try when I get a chance!
Tatty-bye for now!

JodieO · 10/06/2010 18:04

I never usually take folic acid, it's important in the first weeks of pregnancy as it affects the neural tube in the baby and helps it to develop properly, I believe it's to prevent spina bifida. Baby asprin is prescribed for women with recurrent miscarriages so I would think it is safe (it's a very low dose) during pregnancy or, on the odds, safer than losing the baby. Perhaps this also refers to clotting?

Hope the scan goes well persnickety. I'm finding out the sex at my nuchal next week, he says he's about 90-95% based on his personal results which is good. He told me the sex of both my boys at the nuchal. It's apparently not that hard if you're used to doing it and know what to look for I'm really excited about it.

Welcome Jan

Lavita hope everything goes well for you, I'd love twins hehe, always had a feeling I would but I guess that isn't right lol.

Squistle glad your scan went well, can't wait for next week to have mine!

MrsSnaplegs · 10/06/2010 18:20

Agree with JodieO on the Folic Acid - it's normally only recommended for first 12 weeks and if you read the destructions in the packet they say the same thing. Also told by my GP who is very trustworthy to stop after 12 weeks.

NickiSue · 10/06/2010 18:20

Emma2617 We are North Yorkshire, although hubby was Leeds area when he was younger. It's been very wet this week but the sun has just started peeping out a bit!

Lavitabella I'm 14+1 today and have felt the odd fluttering today and yesterday. I would dismiss it if this was my first but it feels very much like the first flutters I had with DS. Congrats on the twin news x

reshapewhiledamp I'm already looking frantically for maternity jeans etc as I'm constantly unbuttoned and my jeans and trousers don't seem to want to stay up! Nearly had a hairy flashing incident at preschool this morning

persnickey I love it- baby gender pee sticks, you could patent them and make your millions! I'd buy them!

Funloving · 10/06/2010 18:34

Hi all, I'm new as well to this thread - posted a bit on the thread in pregnancy but been a lurker since! currently 14 weeks... and have a rant to share re my employer - I emailed him yesterday to inform him of my pregnancy, and he emailed me back to say "I'm not very happy about this to be honest" and then went on to try and persuade me to only take 6 months maternity leave! And he's summoned me to go and see him. Grrr... I feel all militant and tribunally...

Anyone else had problem with work?

SpangleMaker · 10/06/2010 18:39

lavitabella I'll bet it is your babies' movements you can feel. A friend on another thread is pg with twins and felt them very early. It's very exciting . I can't wait to feel this one kicking but apparently my placenta is on the front wall this time so it may not be until a bit later.

squistle congrats on the scan.

Oops DS (who is having a sneaky late nap) is just waking up and threatening to roll off the sofa - better go!

Lavitabella · 10/06/2010 18:42

Funloving Welcome and Congrats for your pregnancy!

That is not on with your employer, I would print out and keep your emails just in case. You are very protected whilst pregnant, I would feel militant too, that is not on

My employers have been great, reduced my workload and moved me closer to home, but it's a fairly large company and they are used to having pregnant staff.

OnlyWantsOne · 10/06/2010 18:55

HELLO to new lady funloving and Hobbitmama - how are you? I'm OWO... nice to meet you

Spangle WOW girl... ooo

NikiSue I am also really suffering from being exhausted in the afternoon, try eating some thing, and sit down and do some thing calm for a bit to rest.

Jodie0 sorry I havent emailed you, are you on face book?

Ive taken the first steps today at setting up a small business from home, bloody daunting and excitng at once, except, me being me I want it all now!!!!

JodieO · 10/06/2010 19:04

Ooh I forgot to say (or maybe I did further up? my brain is mush lol) that I have felt some flutters on and off too, I did with ds2 fairly early on too. It's nice when you're sure though and get a proper kick, a while yet I think hehe.

Funloving that sounds wrong, agree about keeping all your emails.

Spangle I remember when mine napped (they all seemed to drop them around 1 years old) I hated them napping too close to bed time as they'd be up half the night and wouldn't sleep!

Lavita that sounds really good, must make things a bit easier for you, something less to worry about

OWO that's ok no probs I am on face book yes, same email. Sounds exciting, what are you doing if you can say? I attempted to start something myself a few years back but didn't have too much success, was quite difficult with no support at home Thankfully that isn't the case anymore so hoping to again at some point.

WalkTheDog · 10/06/2010 19:18

Hi newbies

Good news re scans.

slightly tired I had my first pregnancy silly brain momment today. Went to rinse out a glass, instead of then putting water down sink, watched myself let it drain all over the kitchn counter next to sink, before realising that wasn't what I should be doing! Told OH when he came home, which gave him a good laugh as I am usually so on the ball and it is him doing silly things!

Younger dog was sick four times today - twice in the house (she had dug up a cabbage and been chewing the stock). Was not very pleasant to clean up when I have such a good sense of smell. And then when I was brushing out the shed (having a clear out) found a dead mouse

Miffster · 10/06/2010 19:19

Has anyone here found they have been craving things or having a big appetite now we're into the 2nd trimester?

I don't usually like sweet things much - Easter eggs stay uneaten in my fridge for months, biscuits bought for guests go soft, always try to avoid birthday cakes at the office as they all taste teeth-grittingly sweet to me - but today M&S was doing Dine In for a Tenner and the pud I picked up was tarte au citron ( don't usually eat pud but thouht DH and I could have a treat).

I just ate both slices. At warp speed.

I am also drinking pints and pints of milk, so I reckon Tiny Clanger must need calcium. Strangely, although I'm normally obsessed with cheese, I have not had wanted to eat cheese.

It's all quite peculiar.

Persnickety · 10/06/2010 19:20

ok, perhaps I shouldn't give medical advice since I'm not a doctor. But, I still think folic acid is a good thing throuout pregnancy and plan to keep taking mine.

For blood thinning (which is what the aspirin is for) there are also lots of foods that have similar effects, if you are interested: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2349593.stm
